The transparent canopy is the perfect solution for each owner who predictably does not like to mock in the rain, but I would not like to create an extensive shaded space that prevents enjoying sunny weather. Several decades ago, it was possible to solve such a task only with the help of glass, which in classic form it could easily break up with a high probability of injury, and in protected – it was quite expensive. Polycarbonate allows you to solve all the problems listed without any loss.


Polycarbonate is often perceived as a purely building material, which is actually incorrect – this type of solid polymer plastic finds itself in other industries of human activity, for example, some details for PC, lenses and even CDs are made. Deciding to build from polycarbonate canopy, adjacent to the house, you should know that the material is cellular and monolithic. In both cases, the width of the sheet is slightly over 2 meters, and the length is 3 (in monolith), 6 and 12 meters (at cells).

In thickness the choice is much more diverse – produced more than 10 options for sheets with a thickness of 2 to 16 mm. The difference between the two species is that the monolith, as follows from the name, is a holistic design without voids and cells, which is usually used for the construction of a transparent polycarbonate canopy, and cellular is a few thin sheets with internal jumpers, effectively decisive tasks thermal insulation due to voids between them.

The cellular version of the material is actually actively used to create canopies, but then they are not completely transparent, but they only pass the light partially.


A bounted canopy made of polycarbonate is designed to solve several tasks, which means it must correspond to a number of requirements. Here are the main out of their number.

  • Ease. Such a characteristic greatly simplifies independent work with the material, and also allows us to build supports, calculated on a less impressive load, which has a positive effect on the cost of erection. Cellular polycarbonate, not possessing perfect transparency, while different and durability, and weighing, which is 16 times less than that of competing glass.
  • Fire safety. According to modern safety requirements, the perfect house and any parts should not contain such materials at all, which represent a significant danger of fire and, therefore, the threat to the health and life of the owners. Unlike many other types of plastic, polycarbonate does not burn, because it is safe and for this it does not even need to be processed specifically.
  • Temperature resistance. Since the canopy is built on the street and will constantly be in the harsh climatic conditions of Russia, he will have to withstand our extremely sharp temperature differences. Manufacturers usually indicate that polycarbonate in their execution is able to withstand 40-degree frost, and 120-degree heat. The second, of course, is unlikely to happen, but the first indicator will be relevant to many regions. It should be borne in mind that in the conditions of the northern regions of Russia, the use of polycarbonate for the construction of canopies is inappropriate – it may not survive.
  • Strength and durability. In the construction of anything, it is not customary to use materials that lose their own operational qualities too fast – every owner, removing the construction, it expects that it will last long. Polycarbonate, subject to the correct installation of supports for a canopy, is able to serve the owner for decades.
  • Plasticity and flexibility. Canopy is not just useful, and also a design solution, allowing the best side to reveal the architectural tastes of the owner and show all guests or even just random passers-by. Polycarbonate perfectly molds, if necessary, you can construct a product of any shapes and sizes.
  • Coloring manifold. Planning to build a canopy, the owner of the house should think about the aesthetic side of the question – the object should look beautifully in combination with the main building and at the same time like the owner. Knowing this, manufacturers specially produce polycarbonate sheets of different colors, giving you the right to choose.
  • Easy service. Staying on the street, sheet canopy has every chance to face mud and lose its original appearance. Material that would not pollute completely does not exist in nature, but polycarbonate at least does not imply complex cleaning – it is enough to wash it with ordinary soapy water.
  • Cheapness. With all its excellent performance properties, polycarbonate does not hit the customer’s wallet, thanks to which it deserves even more flattering reviews.

In form

Arguing globally, polycarbonate canopies, additive to the country or garden house, are only three types, if we are talking about their form. The easiest option is an ordinary flat polycarbonate sheet without any of the sizes. As they say, just and tasteful, although most owners prefer not to such solutions, considering them too simple.

In fact, this is not always the flaw, because to make a similar canopy is easier (the stage of bending is discharged, which saves time and money), and for buildings built in the best traditions of cubism or minimalism, it is generally a non-alternative.

A much more common option for a form for a polycarbonate canopy is a semicircular – it can be found in almost every yard. The degree of roundland details from polycarbonate can be different, almost reaching a semicircle or demonstrating the minimum curvature.

The hypothetical circle at the same time can lay down to building sideways or how to drown in it, when the trump card extended below, rather than the Point of Support. This variant of the polycarbonate canopy is relevant and for the construction of a visor over the porch or any output, and for the construction of canopies for the car. In the second case, the design can be intentionally made by closed side walls – even without having a height up to the roof, they allow you to create something like a garage that protects the parked car from the negative impact of atmospheric phenomena.

Third type of polycarbonate canopies should be called creative or alternative – This simply includes absolutely all products that are not suitable for the description of the first category;. In most cases, it is just a double canopy consisting of two separate parts that can be both flat sheets and curved.

For the construction of “light garages”, such solutions are usually not applied, but on the porch of a specific form, for example, with a rotating staircase, this is almost the only adequate option.

The tasks of a professional designer include layout of sheets in such a way that the general picture does not look too strange, although sometimes the whole “salt” is precisely in the creative approach.

By the type of adjustment to the wall

In most cases, the polycarbonate visor adjoins only one wall and only one side. In this method, a small covered terrace is usually created, which often looks slightly asymmetrically due to the inability to arrange the entrance door directly on the corner of the building. Nevertheless, there are decent examples of adequate fitting such a decision in the project.

Moreover, Polycarbonate canopy can be restricted into opposite walls with their opposite sides. So, usually, in the case when it is needed to organize a parking space for a passenger car – then the walls are set specifically, unless the frame of two adjacent buildings cannot be used, and a polycarbonate shield is installed on these supports. In some cases, it is possible to use a third wall, which in this case will be a dead end.

Finally, it will be logical to mention that a creative approach is possible here, in which the adjoining of the canopy to the walls will occur in any other way. There, the classification no longer copes, because each individual sample will qualify for uniqueness and 100 percent originality.


It is logical that the polycarbonate canopy must be built using polycarbonate sheets, but for them, in turn, you need any support, besides the walls to which they may be adjacent. Polycarbonate itself also still need to choose, but the general principle of choice we have already considered higher: Take the monolithic for the perfect, “window” transparency of the roof or color cellular, if you are not against the deep half.

On the role of material for supports, almost anything, except the polycarbonate itself – the entire polycarbonate canopy you can hardly find. Most often builders are used to create a frame stone and brick, wood or metal. It is possible to approach the construction of wooden supports in different ways, gathering them from an ordinary timber with a cross section of 5×5 cm or from a more expensive, but also a more beautiful carved tree in the form of figured perforated plates. Similarly, it is possible to approach the creation of a metal frame in different ways – someone has a fairly simple solution from metal products with dimensions of 20x40x2 mm, and someone chooses a more aristocratic and attractive metal forging.

Construction with their own hands

Polycarbonate canopies are good for making them alone, quickly and cheap – but, of course, only subject to the instructions of more experienced people. Consider how to build such a design correctly. First, it is worthwhile to answer a number of issues relating to the future building, for example, what territory can be allocated to it, and which area will be covered with a result, for the sake of what purpose canopy. And also it is worth clarifying the rate of precipitation and winds for the region, including the depth of snow in winter to calculate the wind and snow loads and understand which framework is able to withstand the local climate conditions. After that, it is necessary to compile drawings, showing the future structure from all sides and in different angles.

Be sure to recheck the schemes several times on the absence of disagreements – proceed directly to the purchase of material and construction only when you make sure there are no shortcomings in the drawings.

Next you need to stock all tools and materials. What materials can be used to build supports, we talked to a special section – choose to your taste, considering that metal, stone and brick in any case will be more durable than wood. Choosing a metal or tree, lay the price of various impregnations, paints and varnishes, which in the conditions of the street will help extend the service life of the frame. As for the tools, their set is highly dependent on the material you choose – for example, welding will be completely optional to work with the metal, but will not help in the construction of stone, brick or wooden supports.

Adequate installation of the support is possible only in the foundation of the foundation, especially if heavy materials like a stone or brick are chosen for construction framework. Supports must be recessed to the floor, whatever kind it is in this case. If you need to build the base in a concrete porch, the recesses are flooded with the same liquid concrete, but it is better to use wooden piles or metal structures on top of the soil, which can be simply drove.

The total number of supports and the distance between them should be determined in advance, at the design stage. The number of supporting structures is not determined by the eye – the solution you accept, repulse from the total weight of the received canopy, taking into account the precipitation accumulated on its surface, wind efforts and so on.

If the canopy should be connected with electricity, communications, most likely, will be logical to bring under one of the supports. Building a canopy without a foundation on a plot where groundwater can especially close to the surface, take care of the additional increase in the stability of the frame, by defining it.

On top of the proper support, the framework of the crate is still mounted, because polycarbonate, no matter how easy it is, still should not have the points of the support only around the perimeter of the sheet. The connection of parts of this overlap is performed by the way that is most convenient from the point of view of this particular material – For example, wood is combined with corners and screws, and for metal ideal is welding. At the same time, the installation of the crates on top of casual support is possible only after the complete drying of the concrete, and this is the good two weeks.
