Than MDF differs from chipboard?

MDF and chipboard – what they differ and what is better? There are regular designers with such questions, and ordinary buyers who want to update the interior independently. Indeed, for the uninitiated person, studying the question of which material for furniture is stronger and aesthetically looks difficult. Understand everything, evaluate the visual difference and differences in the characteristics will help a detailed overview of these wood-chipboard.

What it is?

The abundance of chipboard materials in free sale allows noticeably expanding the range of typical interior items manufactured from such plates. Furniture from MDF and chipboard is significantly cheaper than similar products from an array, it can have different configuration and design options. But if necessary, choose one of the materials arises a lot of questions that are not related to their value. To figure out everything, you need to learn more about each of the options.


MDF name – Russian transliteration of the English-speaking term Medium Density Fibreboard, denoting a stove of medium density on wood-fiber-based. This material is made from finely dispersed raw materials by dry pressing method. In the manufacture of the natural adhesive of lignin or paraffin is used, which allows for finished stoves environmental safety.

The finished material gets high strength, density and hardness comparable to natural wood. During production, additional processing can be performed to increase biological resistance, refractory, moisture resistance.

The process of manufacturing the plate is largely similar to the creation of paper. Raw wood fibers – crushed very carefully, which allows the waste of various types in production. Pre-obtained fractions are purified by a steam manner, the mass passes additional grinding in special machines, then dried, molding, exposed to hot pressing. The material obtained acquires the strength comparable to the characteristics of natural wood, density and durability, is amenable to almost any types of processing.

The main scope of the MDF application is furniture, for the construction needs of the slabs do not apply, since there are alternative, much cheaper options.


This material used predominantly in furniture production is more correct to refer to the DSTP – a chipboard, but the wrong designation took place as a commercial name. In fact, the chipboard is a composite sheet consisting of shavings with a medium and small fraction. It is made by the method of hot pressing from sawdust, adding a binder on a phenolic basis and some other components that increase the strength of the compound.

Ready sheet is subjected to additional processing. It can be grinding surfaces, lamination or stitching – the last 2 options are considered decorative.

The main scope of application of LDSP is furniture production – it is used when creating cabinet structures. Grinding material acts as the basis for creating packaging containers under cargo transportation, for partitions and wall sheat in construction.

DSP was the first material released from woodworking products. Its release has been adjacent since the 30s of the 20th century, today such sheets are considered one of the most affordable types of construction panels, produced in dozens of countries of the world.

It can be said that chipboard – mass option, while MDF can be attributed to more prestigious types of products.

Main differences

The main parameter for which the MDF differs from the chipboard, – Technology used for the manufacture of plates. The difference in fractions is visible to the naked eye: in one case, it is not always uniform wood sawdust, in the other – a dense array, more resembling wood. MDF – Material that is easy to distinguish by a homogeneous structure, surface smoothness, density.

The main advantage of the chipboard is in the price, the plates of this type are much cheaper and more accessible, after lamination of the surface, they acquire a fairly attractive appearance. MDF is more expensive, but aesthetically, may be subject to figure processing, milling.

More detailed comparison allows you to designate other differences. For example, The DSTP material may relate to the emission classes E2, E3, E4, that is, it contains hazardous resins and compounds of formaldehyde, prohibited for use indoors or in furniture products. If the unfinished manufacturer decides to save, there is a high probability of harm to human health. MDF plates in this sense are much safer, always belong to the E1 emission class, harmless to humans.


In the finished MDF and DSP furniture have pronounced visual differences. So, Wood-chipboard here is used in laminated or in a collapsed form, with a decorative coating, and only for creating body structures – frames, jumpers, shelves. Source massive material is very rarely used in the facades due to its weight and not the highest decorative component.

The high density of MDF allows this material to be easy to refrain: according to these properties, the finished plate is close to the array of natural wood. Sheets can be poured straight and curved, subjected to milling, cutting. Elegant furniture facades with patterns, molding lining, platbands are made of plates. Toning is also performed on production, the whole mass on the cut has the same shade. The decor can be any – from staining to applying textures, pre-grinding before finishing plates is not needed.

As for the choice of external coating, MDF also has a certain advantage. Material can be left simply polished, covered with PVC-based film materials, veneering or paint enamel in glossy, matte performance.

Coating in any case will be moisture-resistant, it will be good and smoothly to bed on the surface of the plate.

In characteristics

Comparison of characteristics also identifies differences between materials. Among the most significant parameters can be distinguished.

  1. Strength. Here the obvious leader is MDF, it is stronger due to the peculiarities of production – the homogeneity of the fractions makes the material much stronger, the grip between the individual elements above. Wood-chip products are inhomogeneous and in composition, and by the size of the used particles. Depending on the method of processing (pressing density, the volume of the binder added), this material may become strong enough, but it is always inferior not only to the array of wood, but also other construction stoves.
  2. Weight. According to this indicator, MDF leads – plates are easier than their analogues. Leaf material size 2800 × 2700 mm will weigh about 28 kg. Accordingly, the load on the walls in the manufacture of mounted cabinets and shelves is obtained, the products are less massive. Chipboard is harder – about 30 kg accounted for a leaf size 2750 × 1830 mm.
  3. Ecology. Under this parameter, it is undoubtedly leading MDF to which international standards are applied, noticeably limiting the use of dangerous formaldehydides. For example, all furniture MDFs has a marking E1, which is much more environmentally friendly, and E2 can not be used in children’s rooms (in most countries it is no longer produced). The chipboard is made according to other standards. Here, formaldehyde resins – a mandatory component of production, and it is quite difficult to check their volumes.
  4. Density. All MDF plates have high characteristics for this indicator, approximate to the natural tree – from 720 to 870 km / m3. Accordingly, the material is suitable for use under loads. At the remnant, this indicator varies, there are 3 types of plates: low (up to 550 kg / m3), medium (up to 750 kg / m3) and high density. The last option is considered to be furniture, the rest – construction, are used as an extensive wall covering, partitions.
  5. Moisture resistance. A classic polished wood-chipboard is able to actively absorb water, gaining up to 30% of the initial volume. The same applies to the LDSP, which has poorly closed edges, you do not get worse worse moisture. MDF due to high density is practically deprived of these shortcomings – even with full immersion in water for several hours, the material does not change its parameters.

These are the main characteristics for which you can compare 2 types of material in the plates. And here MDF can be called an undisputed leader, because the sheets refer to a higher product class.

What’s better?

When choosing a material to build partitions inside the house, for the formation of decorative screens, in search of suitable furniture always have to make a choice between different types of materials. Of course, if the main criterion is the lowest possible, here there are no competitors here in chipboard: they are available at a price, after applying the decorative layer they look quite attractive. But there are also their subtleties. For example, in premises with high humidity this option is not suitable – for the bathroom you will have to choose furniture and furnishings from other materials.

MDF is much more expensive, but avoids problems not only with the release of hazardous substances or excessive moisture absorption. This material allows you to significantly diversify the design of finished furniture. For example, fashionable radius or curly facades for the kitchen can be created only of it, the remnant of curvilinear cutting will not transfer, as well as changes in geometric parameters. In terms of humidity limitations are also minimal. MDF will easily withstand its increase to 70%, and with special processing this indicator will be even higher.

For the kitchen both types of material it is better to choose in the most expensive performance. Such plates have additional moisture resistance, anti-view components to prevent fire in case of contact with fire. With a significant thickness, the countertop in the kitchen may well be from the laminated chipboard, but it is necessary that the edges were carried out in its manufacture. An apron is better to use MDF shields with fire-resistant impregnation and decorative film coating.

Often these materials are combined to get a more aesthetic result, but at an affordable price. Practice is considered common when the frames of kitchen cabinets are made of chip material, and facades Middle Density Plate. However, if the budget allows, it is better to immediately give preference to furniture from MDF. For its qualities, it is similar to the array of wood, it is much cheaper than it, serves long.

The best plates are manufactured in the EU countries, they are labeled E1, are absolutely safe, suitable for all rooms at home – from the children’s room and bedrooms to the bathroom.
