Everyone who has begun to repair a house or apartment faces the need for high-quality processing of walls and ceilings before their coating. Modern building mixes for finishing works greatly simplify this process.
No matter how the surfaces after repair work will look like (painting, drawing wallpaper, fastening of drywall), first it should be pricked.
What to primrate?
The primer solution is a liquid, as a rule, colorless or white.
Transparent material applied on the surface cooked under the wallpaper. Opaque is used to process ceilings (in most cases).
When a putty is made without preliminary primer, then after some time the wall or ceiling is definitely squeal.
In fact, you will have to redo everything. Plus it will entail as a number of labor costs and financial expenses. To avoid such unpleasant moments, it is better to initially process surfaces and prepare them for finishing works.
Laid on top of primer putty will be kept tight on the walls or ceilings.
To bind over all materials that will be covered with surfaces in the future, primer is applied. It acts as a connecting unit between the base of the treated surface and the subsequent printed layers.
Qualitative primer characteristics are as follows:
- Protects from formation on the walls of mold and fungi;
- deeply penetrates the cracks and fills them, creates a smooth and solid surface of the wall in front of the shtlock;
- Aligns surfaces from any material (drywall, concrete and others);
- neutralizes color spots;
- Processed surfaces can be brick, wooden, concrete and plasterboard.
Types of primer
Today, the paint and varnish industry presents a large spectrum of mixtures to prepare surfaces to further coating.
Main from them: alkyd, acrylic, polystyrene, primer-based primers, adhesion, mineral, latex and others.
Alkyd is designed to process wooden structures. Protects the tree from rotting and different insects. Fashionable direction in construction is the creation of houses from wood material. If in the future the surface will be covered with varnish, then it is necessary to prepare it by applying soil.
Designed and implemented in the production and sale of primer using shellac.
This liquid mixture is firmly penetrating into the depths of the wood layer (smoothing the surface where there are bits) and making it completely resistant to the penetration of humidity. Protects from the formation of fungal layers.
Acrylic primer is used for almost all types of surfaces. Very durable layer falls on the surface. Its peculiarity is that such a metal design can be processed, as well as surfaces that absorb moisture slowly. Waterproof bases are best handled with mixtures that are compatible with them. To prepare the wall under the wallpaper, the primer “Optimax” will fit well. It will not only hide all surface defects, but also paint the wall in white, which is important for stickers of thin wallpaper.
The adhesion mixture is intended for rough surfaces. It is convenient to lay a tile on them. The primer has in its composition quartz sand. Suitable for the grounds that decorative plaster will be applied.
There are primers, such as glyphthale perchlorvinyl. They are designed to apply on cement, brick and wood. Used for external work. Have very high toxicity.
The mixture, which contains abrasive particles (quartz sand), is used to cover concrete, for example, “concrete contact”. Concrete bases are tested for strength. All irregularities and recesses are smeared by cement, and after drying it is used to process the surface of the primer. It can be used before applying the finish coating. The adhesion walls are at times will increase after processing in such a composition.
For premises with high humidity, primers are suitable with antibacterial components.
Polystyrene is usually applied to external surfaces, because it has strong toxicity and not used for operation inside.
Phenolic applies on metal surfaces. To prevent the appearance of corrosion on metal surfaces, anti-corrosion compositions are used.
Universal and acrylic is used for drywall (GLC and GVL). This material that absorbs moisture very well and requires mandatory primer, especially in the places of seams and joints. It is also necessary to carry out such a stage of work before laying tiles.
Plasterboard sheets (GLCs) and dry-fiber (GVL) are a material containing a gypsum base beaten by flexible and smooth cardboard. Such sheets produce the walls of the walls, fasten them on the ceilings, set various partition compositions indoors.
The company “KNAUF”, being a manufacturer of plasterboard, has developed and implemented primer in production for its processing. Primer “Knauf” is universal and has high quality indicators.
Plasterboard structures began to install more indoors with high humidity. Such an opportunity was presented due to the fact that in the production of paints and varnishes and primer mixtures a new composition appeared. The surface treated with them does not lose their initial characteristics and are saved unchanged for many years.
Latex primer materials in their composition have a rubber tree juice, so they are referred to in natural components. The surface being processed by them becomes resistant to wear, water exposure and humidity. The composition is suitable for the grounds that quickly appear (loose and old).
For external work use mineral primers. They contain cement in their composition. Fit for brick walls and those made from blocks.
Preparation of surfaces
Some surfaces absorb moisture, and others are not, so the primer material for them will differ significantly.
To prepare the walls or ceiling for further processing (painting, wall sticker and other), it is necessary to implement the following:
- Clean the surface from dust and dirt;
- scraping old paint, if it is;
- remove old wallpapers;
- wash and dry the walls;
- Close up of depressions, cracks or chips with putty.
Clear surface from dust can be rag or with a vacuum cleaner. Paintwork material is cleaned with a spatula or painting scraper.
Wallpapers are removed with a metal spatula and hot water to wet them. After that, the old layer swell. Wallpaper will now not be much labor.
After removing previous materials you need to wash the walls. If there are surfaces on which mold or fungus focuses, they are recommended to be treated with antiseptic solution.
When the walls are washed, they dried. An important point is that the process itself may take several days. It all depends on the surface to which water was affected.
When the installation of plasterboard surfaces is completed, they are prepared for primer. Soil acts as an insulating material, increases the adhesive properties of the surface, deeply penetrates the inside of the material, thereby exposing it to polymerization (hardening). Surfaces can be screwed to a wall frame or fixed on the ceiling. The primer should be chosen given the surface area, which it will go to. Preparatory measures should be carried out on the processing of structures efficiently, so that later the finishing material (whether paint or wallpaper) evenly lightened to the main surface.
To work it takes a container for the mixture itself, rubber gloves, brush, roller. Perhaps the use of kraskopultum.
It is best to apply primer with two layers: the first is put between the wall under the plaster and putty, and the second after the shtlock. Then the materials applied will not be able to peel or turn. The primer forms a protective layer, it provides the possibility of two layers inside firmly connect (clutch).
Everyone has the right to choose the soil, which will consider the most suitable for the walls in his home. A variety of assortment allows you to replace them one on another, it is necessary only to take into account the degree of moisture and the air temperature in the room. Universal material that treats any surface is an acrylic mixture. Before applying on the wall, the composition is bred by water.
The mixture of medium penetration is applied on the surface under the wallpaper or under painting of walls. Wallpaper should not be heavy.
For others, use deep penetration mixtures. Wallpaper in this case will hold a long period of time.
The process does not require any special skills and skills.
The mixed primer is poured into the container. If the mixture is dry, then it is diluted with water. If the solution is concentrated, it is prepared according to the proportions specified on the package.
Further, the walls are labeled uniformly and carefully, especially in places where there were cracks or damage. When the walls are old, then for high-quality and reliable strengthening, it is necessary to apply a mixture with a thicker layer. If the base is porous, then the soil is applied to the full filling of the hollow. The roller is applied with a solution from the bottom up. Distribute the solution across the entire area of the base.
Plasterboard is subject to similar processing. The entire surface is uniformly treated with cooked (diluted water) mixture. Brush handle joints and seats under the self-tapping screw. The time of the subsequent drying of the solution depends on its type.
After drying the soil, a thin layer of finishing putty is applied to any surfaces. So lines the walls. Reinforced ribbon is glued in plasterboard. After drying, it is necessary to make the final primer again.
To apply for concrete bases of subsequent coatings, it is best to use quartz primer. Powerful glue, located in its composition, will help the layers of the surface tightly connect.
In order to be convenient to carry out high-altitude priming work, you can adjust the roller on the pole. There are such auxiliary mechanisms on sale.
Do not ask yourself the question of the feasibility of applying primer on the walls, ceilings or other bases. Save finances in this case. The mixture will help prepare the surface to subsequent coatings. Less glue or paint will need to be applied on the surface treated with the preparatory composition. The main thing – there will be no disappointment upon completion of the entire stage of repair work. Soil will not give the opportunity to turn off the wallpaper, losing paint, collapse tiles. You will save your strength and money.
