Children, especially young children, have the most difficulty with pain. They can’t complain, only from the age of two can they show exactly where they have pain, and that’s not always. Sore throat in young children is manifested by symptoms such as insomnia, they refuse to eat, there is considerable restlessness and intense crying.
Objectively you can sometimes identify a fever, that is, an increase in body temperature, and older children may complain actively about weakness and malaise. Any pediatrician can cite dozens or even hundreds of cases when the leading symptom was a sore throat in a child, and then joined by other manifestations.
The physician’s task in these cases is not simple: to achieve a quick and effective cure, but the medications must have a high safety profile. The doctor should try not to use strong medications, do not prescribe strong medications, without good reason, these drugs should be in reserve. In this case, we are primarily talking about antibiotics.
If the treatment is prescribed correctly, no new unpleasant symptoms are added. The pain in the throat will first weaken and then disappear in about 3-4 days from the beginning of the prescribed treatment. This article will tell you how, without using antibiotics, to ensure the onset of rapid analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, eliminate swelling and hyperemia of the posterior pharynx with a minimum of medication. But first let’s see what the main causes of sore throat and inflammatory response of the tonsils and mucous membranes in children.
The main causes of sore throat in children
As clinical practice shows, about 75% of all cases of acute sore throat in a child accounts for acute respiratory infections, or acute respiratory viral infection, and 25% for bacterial flora. Group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus still plays a major role in this flora, as the culprit of chronic tonsillitis, and immunological sensitization of the body.
The equivalent of an acute pain syndrome can be a farting and dry throat in the morning. Of course, such unpleasant symptoms as difficulty nasal breathing during acute respiratory infections can be caused by an allergic reaction, the overgrowth of adenoids, or simply excessively dry air in the room, so in such cases a consultation with an ENT doctor and other specialized specialists is necessary.
It has been said above that children most often have an acute respiratory viral infection, manifesting as acute tonsillitis, or sore throat, acute pharyngitis, or acute tonsillopharyngitis. In some cases, the culprit is infectious mononucleosis, or monocytic sore throat caused by VEB (Epstein-Barr virus), but more often other viruses are the culprit:
- About 18% of the causative agents of acute respiratory infections are rhinoviruses;
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RS), and adenoviruses-12% of cases;
- Parainfluenza – 7%;
- About 10-15% of ARI cases in all children have mixed pathogens, when more than 3 types of different viruses are responsible for the infection;
If we talk about co-infection with two types of viruses, this is more than 50% of all cases of acute respiratory viral infection in children.
Some diseases and their symptoms
It is known that the most common cause of sore throat is viral pharyngitis. With it, the throat is usually moderately red, there is usually no pronounced, bright redness. Regional lymph nodes, namely cervical, submandibular, occipital lymph nodes are not enlarged. No plaque on the tonsils, or their pronounced, painful reaction, usually.
Angina
If there is severe tonsillitis, or angina, the clinical picture can be different. The leading symptom will be severe sore throat, which is further increased by swallowing and speaking. Body temperature in angina is almost always high, or even, in rare cases, hyperpyretic: above 40 degrees. The tonsils react with plaque on them. The plaque may be either follicular or lacunar, filling either the follicles or large lacunae. Accordingly, the sore throat will either be follicular or more severe, lacunar. In the mildest cases, there may be a catarrhal sore throat without plaque. But even then, the tonsils are brightly hyperemic.
Lymph nodes, especially in the neck, may be enlarged and painful on palpation. In young children, sore throat may appear as abdominal pain. The youngest children react as usual, with crying, anxiety, decreased appetite and refusal of food. There are also other symptoms of sore throat.
Diphtheria
In either case, parents need to be aware of diphtheria, especially if there are film-like plaques in the throat. Distinctive signs of diphtheria of the pharynx – pronounced toxin exposure. Against the background of fever, it is not the blush of fever that catches the eye, but the unusual pallor of the skin. This is the effect of a toxin that has caused peripheral vasospasm. Swallowing pain is weaker than in angina, but there is incomprehensible swelling of the soft tissues of the neck, puffiness appears. The classic symptom of diphtheria is a whitish gray “dirty” film in the pharynx and tonsils. Diphtheria is fraught with the appearance of severe forms – toxic, with the development of edema, hemorrhagic, and the appearance of true diphtheria croup, or stenosis of the larynx.
Scarlet fever
Scarlet fever is an acute streptococcal generalized infection. Since β -haemolytic streptococcus group A also causes sore throat, we can roughly consider it “streptococcal sore throat that has penetrated into the blood”. That’s why in scarlet fever, a sore throat in a child is also one of the important symptoms.
Scarlet fever occurs in the form of the appearance of a fine-point rash throughout the body, on the face of the child there is a bright blush, especially on the cheeks with a pale nasolabial triangle. Also a characteristic sign of scarlatina can be considered a crimson tongue. At the beginning the tongue is usually thickly covered with a white plaque, but then it clears up around the edges and at the tip, the papillae are pronounced, and the tip of the tongue has a crimson hue.
Skin rash is usually thicker on bending surfaces, skin folds. It is in the area of the elbows, under the knees, and in the groin. Also in the case of scarlet fever, the disease usually “starts out” so acute that parents can even pinpoint not only the day but also the hour of the onset.
Laryngitis and laryngotracheitis
Laryngitis is inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. The child has a hoarse voice, the cough is dry and barking, there is a feeling of farting in the throat, as well as scratching. Laryngitis does not usually cause swallowing pain in the throat.
In the case of tracheitis, or laryngotracheitis, when the inflammatory process descends into the trachea from the larynx, there are already more symptoms. In addition to the hoarseness of the voice, barking cough, and scratching sensation, a more severe attack-like dry cough occurs, and there may be noisy, labored breathing, general symptoms of weakness, and fever.
Stomatitis
Also a child’s sore throat may be caused by stomatitis, that is, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. This could be a toxic stomatitis with salmonella infection, herpes infection, or candida stomatitis.
Usually it is not the throat that hurts, but the inner mucosa of the mouth, but a child, especially a small child, just can not accurately distinguish the location of the pain. When asked what hurts, he points to his mouth. That is why it is so important for parents to examine their child’s oral cavity, and not automatically assume that it is the throat. There may usually be some plaque, both white and yellowish, on the mucous membranes of the gums, the inside of the cheeks, and on the tongue. They may come off easily or with difficulty, have a curd-like character with a fungal odor, as in candida, but the mucosa of the mouth may be painful.
The doctor can sometimes by the nature of the pain and by the rash on the mucous membrane, by its color, can make not only an approximate, but even an accurate diagnosis. Pediatricians may recall that the so-called Belsky-Filatov spots are characteristic of measles infection, and their presence on the mucous membrane of the mouth may indicate a viral pathology called measles. A livid tinge and swelling on the back of the pharynx may indicate a meningococcal infection, which is a formidable and dangerous carrier.
Sore throat does not usually occur on its own, and is most often accompanied by various symptoms. In case of acute respiratory infections, or a common viral cold, this is a runny nose, rhinorrhea, low fever up to subfebrile digits. If we are talking about monocytic angina, or infectious mononucleosis, it is a pronounced swelling of the submandibular lymph nodes, and especially – lymph nodes of the posterior cervical group.
In the case of an acute suppurative process, such as a pharyngeal or periopharyngeal abscess, when urgent surgical treatment is required, the pain is unilateral. Examination of the pharynx shows considerable asymmetry of the mucous membrane, its bulging toward the center (especially in the case of a paratonsillar abscess), its tension, and at this localization, pus usually accumulates in the submucosa. Only a puncture can help, the removal of the pus, which immediately causes a sharp relief, then rinsing with antiseptics and prescribing antibiotics.
When there is an emergency or threatening symptom
It is possible that the cause of a sore throat in a child could be more than just an acute respiratory infection, which can go away on its own. Even a coronavirus infection caused by Sars-Cov 2, or covid-19, can go unnoticed in children. But if you delay treatment, then, for example, in the case of severe streptococcal angina on the background of reduced immunity as a result you can get such serious complications as the development of rheumatism and the appearance of acquired heart defect.
What are the threatening symptoms of sore throat in a child, in which you must urgently or call an ambulance, or see a doctor? Here they are:
- the child cannot swallow saliva at all;
- A skin rash appeared after a sore throat;
- appeared pain in the abdomen, pain in the ear, bleeding fluid from the ear;
- The color of urine has changed, its quantity has significantly decreased in volume;
- Breathlessness attacks have occurred;
- Vocal dysfunction, that is, inability to speak between breaths. This may indicate that a foreign body has entered the child’s airway;
- An elevation of the body above 39 degrees, or lower when feeling unwell;
- The appearance of uncontrollable nausea and vomiting, photophobia, headache;
- A sharp increase and painfulness of cervical and other lymph nodes;
- swelling of the neck;
- The appearance of a cramp syndrome;
- asymmetry of the tonsils, irregular swelling in the throat;
- Widespread white, curd-like or especially filmy plaque in the throat, the presence of sharp soreness in the mouth, bleeding ulcers – aphthae.
Of course, such dangerous conditions require emergency medical care, but to the painful syndrome in the throat and oropharynx in children and ourselves, we are all so used to that we begin in most cases to cope with it independently.
To a large extent pharmacies help us in this, because they offer a significant range of products that help reduce or completely eliminate sore throat in children and adults.
Modern medications for sore throat in children
In our review, we will not touch at all the means, from a sore throat, containing antibiotics. The fact is that sore throat only in 25% of cases requires the use of these drugs, and not immediately, but after a preliminary diagnosis, and preferably after a bacteriological examination of the discharge from the tonsils, oral cavity and the back of the throat, with a determination of the sensitivity of the isolated flora to antibiotics. Pain-reducing, swelling-reducing, antiseptic, but not antibiotic medications are used most often. And it is best to use a combined topical medication, which produces a complex effect “three in one”.
Why antibiotics are not used as the first remedy for a sore throat is clear. There are so many drugs for sore throats in pharmacies that if each, or even half of them, contains an antibiotic, soon germs will develop total resistance to many antibiotics that are now considered to be quite strong.
In addition, antibiotics do not work on all flora. There are some that work well on gram-negative microorganisms (for example, fluoroquinolones), but have no effect on gram-positive flora, and vice versa. If we are talking about viral infections, then antibiotics are useless here at all, antibiotics do not work on viruses. However, the antiseptic effect will be very important, because very often the primary viral attack is followed by the accession of the secondary microbial flora.
Once again we must say that giving your child antibiotics yourself without a doctor’s prescription is strictly prohibited .
And it’s not that if you prescribe antibiotics incorrectly, they will be useless. After all, these preparations also have a negative side. This:
- The spread of allergic reactions;
- the emergence of intestinal dysbacteriosis associated with the inhibition of normal intestinal flora by antibiotics, the associated avitaminosis;
- a serious complication that occurs against the background of taking antibiotics is pseudomembranous colitis, caused by the bacterium Clostridium difficile. It is often associated with taking clindamycin;
- Excessive strain on the liver;
- drug interactions;
- The appearance of fungal infections. After all, many representatives of normal oral and intestinal microflora produce substances that prevent fungal infestation. And if a child is constantly given antibiotics for sore throat, then the risk of activation of the same candidiasis will be much higher.
What are the conditions to be followed in order to quickly cope with a sore throat if you do not give antibiotics? Preferably, the drug, not being an antibiotic, has antiviral, antifungal and antiseptic activity. To be safe, non-toxic, and not absorbed into the blood from the mucous membrane of the mouth and oropharynx, that is, had low absorption, the drug should not be allergic or irritating.
Among other things, a child will be much more willing to be treated with a drug that is pleasant, tasty, and delivered to the site of action very quickly, or interesting. That’s why among lollipops children love all sorts of figures, in the form of fish and bears, as well as they really like different sprays and sprays, which do not need to swallow, they do not have to rinse your throat long and tediously, or drink them. Several times, or one “squirt” is enough to produce a therapeutic effect. Sprays are much safer than lollipops; the name cannot be choked, inhaled, etc.
Review of modern sprays and sprays for sore throats in children
Different sprays and sprays are really considered an emergency remedy for a sore throat, they quickly relieve pain and reduce swelling in the throat and hyperemia of the mucosa. You can spray a medicine, e.g. anesthetic and antiseptic, over a large area at once with a single squeeze.
What is the difference between an aerosol and a spray? The aerosol contains the medicine under pressure, so it is quite enough to press and hold the atomizer button for one or two seconds, and the job is done. As for the spray, it is a “hand pump” mechanism: you must press the atomizer button rhythmically, and the liquid will be delivered through a nozzle to the oral mucosa.
The physical delivery mechanism of the aerosol suggests that the droplets are smaller than those of the spray, and this mist has a much larger area, allowing it to be applied under pressure to remote areas, and especially on the tonsils. It is known that tonsils are covered with crypts and in their clefts and depths pathogens can hide, forming inflammations and purulent plugs and plaques.
This review is current as of May 2021, the price range is for pharmacies of all forms of ownership in the Russian Federation. For each medication its form, its trade name is given, and if it is an original drug, its international nonproprietary name, or INN, is given first. There are many medicines for sore throats and it is quite easy to choose the one you like most. They are produced by Russian and foreign companies.
This review is not intended to promote any particular pharmaceutical company, or any particular medicine.Also, there is no purpose in creating an anti-advertisement by not mentioning any popular drug in this review. The only criterion by which the product got into the review is the official instruction, the presence of the active ingredient, the clinical guidelines, and the presence of the drug in the state pharmacopoeia.
Thus, the list excludes homeopathic remedies as having no active ingredient, as well as biologically active additives, distributed in Runet with the help of aggressive marketing methods, having unproven effectiveness or not having it at all.
Naturally, this review will practically not list products containing antibiotics, as any antibiotics are now prescribed by a doctor, and have disappeared from the free over-the-counter access. All children’s throat medicines are categorized according to age of use. The first drug is indicated for the youngest children, and the age limits increase further down the list.

Lugol (iodine + glycerol + potassium iodide) – available immediately after the end of breastfeeding
Rating: 4.9

Lugol, or, more precisely, Lugol solution, is elemental iodine, + potassium iodide, in which iodine and the triatomic alcohol glycerin, which has a sweet taste, dissolve well. It is available as a spray for topical use and has a long history in medicine. The dosage of the active substance is 1.25%, and for a small bottle of 50 ml you can pay from 50 to 100 rubles., Or a little more expensive. It is produced by a variety of pharmaceutical companies in Russia, Lithuania, Norway and other countries. The main effect is produced by molecular iodine, which acts antiseptically and as a local irritant. It destroys a wide variety of germs, and it works on harmful yeast fungi.
The solution of Lugol should be applied to a small area of the mucosa of the pharynx, on the tonsils and the back wall of the pharynx. If it is applied by applying it to large areas of the skin, it will be absorbed and enter the bloodstream. If the solution of Lugol is applied to the mucous membrane, the drug undergoes a chemical reaction, with the formation of iodide. Lugol solution is indicated for the treatment and prevention of infectious and inflammatory pathology of the oral mucosa in children and adults. Lugol should be applied topically, 4 to 6 times a day, applying a single squeeze of the spray head. At the moment of injection you need to hold your breath, in no case perform the injection during the phase of inhalation .
Advantages and disadvantages
A small disadvantage of Lugol solution is its weaker effect against staphylococci, but when the drug is used immediately, or prophylactically, when we do not know which microbial infection has caused a sore throat, then this disadvantage can be ignored.
Also a rather interesting plus is the sweet taste of this medicine. However, do not use this drug for too long, because the phenomena of the so-called iodism can occur: it is rhinitis, urticaria and salivation, lacrimation. Extremely cautiously, and only after a doctor’s recommendation, you can use this drug in children with liver and kidney pathology and thyrotoxicosis, or thyroid hyperfunction. However, the biggest plus is the ability to use Lugol in small amounts and a short course in very young children .
Inhalipt – from 3 years old
Rating: 4.8

One of the popular and inexpensive sprays can be considered Inhalipt. It contains a complex composition, of various synthetic and plant components. Together they have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action, Inhalipt is capable of being an antiseptic, and at the same time it does not contain any antibiotics. Inhalipt contains eucalyptus and peppermint oils, while norsulfazole and streptocide have a local effect. They are not absorbed internally, the intestines are not harmed, and, in addition, they are not antibiotics, but belong to the antiseptic.
Ingalypt is indicated in children over 3 years of age for various inflammatory diseases of the mouth and throat, accompanied by marked hyperemia, tonsil enlargement, in the presence of stomatitis and mouth ulcers. Inhalipt can also be used for laryngitis, and it is sprayed three or four times a day, and before applying the drug, it is advisable to rinse the mouth with water if the patient has recently eaten the day before.
Inhalipt is produced in Ukraine, it is a pharmaceutical company Micropharm, one can of 30 ml, which is enough for a long time, can be purchased for 90 rubles. There is also a domestic analogue, manufactured by Vips-Med, but it is a little more expensive, and the amount of medicine is smaller: a cylinder of 20 ml will cost about 100 rubles.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantage of this drug is in its natural composition, and in those antiseptics, which are quite able to cope with the usual microbial flora, or used as a prophylactic. In addition, it is refreshing, it has a good taste. Only if there is an individual intolerance to peppermint and eucalyptus essential oil, or any other kind of special sensitivity, then there is an intolerance, but it is rare. The disadvantages are the rather old antiseptics (streptocide). And, if the child has a sore throat, or sore throat, is caused by pathogenic flora resistant even to modern antibiotics, then this drug will be ineffective, unlike the last century. But if a baby over 3 years old has a common cold and sore throat associated with acute respiratory infections, then Ingalypte will be very useful to him.
Hexatidine (Hexoral, Maxicold Lor) from 3 years old
Rating: 4.8

In the Russian Federation, this remedy is known as Hexoral, and it is produced in France, the main component is a modern antiseptic. Maxicold – it is a domestic analogue, but the palm is behind the French original remedy. This antiseptic, hexatidine, affects not only bacteria, but also inhibits the reproduction of viruses and pathogenic fungi. Hexoral is a reddish liquid with a slight smell of mint.
Indications for use are pharyngitis or sore throat, dentists and orthodontists love it because the drug is indicated for stomatitis, as well as for the prevention of inflammatory complications after tooth extraction. It is used twice, in the morning and in the evening, after meals and hygiene treatment of the mouth. The drug should not be swallowed. The drug is manufactured by the French company Famar Orleans. A 40 ml aerosol costs about 300 rubles.
Advantages and disadvantages
Hexoral does not contain alcohol, and it can be prescribed even for children from 3 years old. But children should understand that Hexoral should not be swallowed, so it is somewhere between 3-4 years of age and older. The drug is very well tolerated, but if you use it for a long time, for example, several months, then it may cause a dulling of the taste buds. A big plus of this remedy is that in addition to disinfecting, it also relieves pain, and immediately relieves severe pain, like an anesthetic.
Miramistin – from 3 years old
It came out of a secret laboratory and was positioned as a drug for astronauts. It has shown its high effectiveness. But in an interview with the developers it turned out that the original Miramistin, which was created in the USSR for cosmonauts, contained not one, but three components. And there is only one component of Miramistin in our pharmacies. Therefore, the comparative effectiveness of “that” and “this” remedy has not yet been clarified.
Miramistin is indicated for use because of its high tolerability and effectiveness in a variety of dental diseases, children and adults, oral cavity and pharynx, for prophylaxis, when wearing dentures. The product has high activity against a variety of viruses, including hepatitis and HIV, anti-herpetic action, antifungal and antibacterial.
You may use Miramistin in children no more than four times a day, and in addition to throat irrigation and, if necessary, mouthwash, you may also spray Miramistin into the nasal cavity. You can purchase the spray in a wide variety of bottles of various volumes, and the average price of a 150 ml package will not exceed 320 rubles.
Advantages and disadvantages
A big plus is that it is a tasteless and odorless liquid, not capable of irritating mucous membranes, and very rarely causing allergies. Miramistine is not prone to resorption, and is not absorbed into the bloodstream. Of course, there is an individual intolerance, but other than that, there are no contraindications. It can be used by pregnant women, it is safe and effective. And the fact that it helps to prevent various sexually transmitted diseases, further increases its popularity.
Cameton – from 5 years old
Rating: 4.8

This is probably the most affordable aerosol for the treatment of sore throat in children over five years of age, which is sold in the Russian Federation. It will cost you less than 100 rubles., and even 50 rubles. In fact, despite its cheapness, the remedy is quite effective. Cameton contains eucalyptus oil, camphor, which cools and relieves pain, levomenthol and chlorbutanol, which disinfects.
You can use Kameton for all the pathological processes described above, which are accompanied by sore throat, redness, pain when swallowing, swelling and hyperemia of the mucous membranes. A big advantage of Cameton is that it can be used for rhinitis and sinusitis, and sprayed not only in the mouth but also in the nasal cavity.
Kameton is used no more than 4 times a day, and do not fear the possibility of overdose. You press the valve once and exactly one therapeutic dose comes out. A small bottle of Cameton aerosol 45 ml from the domestic manufacturer will cost you from 55 rubles. for a pack, and a small vial of 20 milliliters, for example, will be even cheaper – starting at 36 rubles.
Advantages and disadvantages
Cameton has few disadvantages. Good and proper dosage, convenient form, low price has made it quite popular and favorite among the people. This remedy, however, can not be used alone in severe pathological processes and serious forms of angina, but in the event that a sore throat has recently emerged, then this drug will be indispensable in the home medicine cabinet.
Naturally, it is advisable for children not to use Kameton, and in general, aerosol cans, by themselves, and in their mouths should be “squirted” by adults, so that there is no unforeseen. It can also be considered that this drug is not used in pregnant and breastfeeding women, but not because of any particular harmfulness, but simply because the necessary clinical studies have not been performed and no experience in treatment has been accumulated.
Tantum verde (benzidamine) – from 3 years old
Rating: 4.8

Tantum Verde is a whole family of medications to treat sore throat: lozenges, lozenges, and a dosed spray for topical use. It is produced by Angeline Francesco (Italy), and for a package of 30 ml you can pay up to 300 rubles. Benzidamine is a colorless transparent liquid with a characteristic odor of mint, and by its effect this drug belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It reduces the manifestation of inflammation and anesthetizes the mucosal surface. It also has an antifungal effect against candida, which cause thrush.
Usual use of Tantum Verde for symptomatic treatment of sore throat in adults and children with various etiologies of inflammation: pharyngitis and laryngitis, sore throat and stomatitis. This medicine is also used as a prophylactic after operations in ENT department and after tooth extraction. As part of the complex therapy it is used in case of candidiasis and periodontal disease. The drug should be injected once for every 4 kg of body weight, but no more than 4 injections at once, with a multiple of 2 to 6 times a day. Children aged 6 to 12, and older than 12 years are prescribed other dosages specified in the instructions. Duration of treatment should not exceed 7 days without a doctor’s prescription.
Advantages and disadvantages
The drug is well tolerated, but side effects sometimes occur. Their frequency does not exceed 1 case per 100 applications, and most frequently they are skin rash, feeling of numbness in mouth, or dry mouth. It is important to remember that it can be used for symptomatic treatment of pain and inflammation from the age of three. Caution should be exercised in the presence of hypersensitivity to benzidamine or other components, as well as in children with hypersensitivity to NSAIDs and the presence of bronchial asthma and nasal polyposis, and especially with their combination.
Grammidin for children (Gramicidin C + cetylpyridinium chloride) – from 4 years old
Rating: 4.7

Pediatric Grammidin is positioned as a topical antiseptic exclusively for use in dentistry and ENT practice. It contains Gramicidin C and cetylpyridinium chloride. The result is a classic combination of an antibiotic and an antiseptic. Antibiotic affects the quality of the microbial cell membrane, increases its permeability, the membrane becomes unstable, and the microbial cell dies. Gramicidin attacks the germs most often responsible for throat and mouth infections.
The second ingredient, cetylpyridinium, is a classic antiseptic that helps Gramicidin cope with germs. It does not destroy them, but it suppresses their reproduction and growth. As a result of using such a combined product, inflammation decreases, pain in the child’s throat, swallowing becomes less painful, and when the drug is applied in the oral cavity, it causes a slight influx of saliva, or hypersalivation, which mechanically well cleans the mouth and throat from various microbes and their products of life.
This medicine is available as a dosed spray for topical use; one bottle contains 112 doses. One dose is produced for each press of the dispenser. This drug is produced by Valenta, under the control of the Dutch manufacturer Famar. The price range is quite large: one bottle can cost from 200 to 450 rubles. It should be used from 1 to 4 times a day depending on the doctor’s prescription or the patient’s age. It is desirable to refrain from eating and drinking for at least one hour after using infant gramidine.
Advantages and disadvantages
The drug is well tolerated, its only drawback is the lack of local anesthetic, that is, anesthetic component. Therefore, if a child has a very severe sore throat, this remedy should hardly be prescribed in the first place. In addition, the drug, despite its spray form, is contraindicated in children under the age of four. If we talk about adults, it can not be prescribed to women in the first trimester of pregnancy, as well as during breastfeeding. In addition to the spray form, children’s Grammidin is also available in a crumbling tablet. The total course of treatment without a prescription should not exceed 7 days .
Theraflu Lar (benzoxonium chloride + lidocaine) – from 4 years old
Rating: 4.7

This medicine for children and adults is produced by the world famous company Novartis from Switzerland, the owner of the registration certificate is Glaxosmithk
Teraflu Lar can also be used in children with sore throat, starting from the age of four, but Teraflu Lar just contains a local anesthetic lidocaine, which is good for pain relief of the mucous membrane. As a result, the sore throat can go away very quickly and completely. In addition to the local anesthetic lidocaine, the drug contains benzoxonium chloride, which is an antiseptic drug related in structure to Miramistin. It destroys the membranes of Gram-positive microorganisms more than Gram-negative ones. But just Gram-positive flora and is found mainly in diseases of the pharynx and oral mucosa.
The drug is used for pain in the throat of a child locally in case of stomatitis, ulcerative gingivitis, pharyngitis and laryngitis with severe inflammation and pain syndrome. In children, it can also be used in the simplest, catarrhal form of angina. Children from four years of age are prescribed no more than 3 sprays no more than 6 times a day, and no longer than 5 days. If it does not get better, you should see a doctor.
Advantages and disadvantages
A big plus is its antifungal and antiviral activity against influenza, herpes, and parainfluenza viruses. The medication acts very quickly, immediately relieves severe sore throat, oral pain, e.g., in erosive-ulcerative stomatitis. It can be used for stomatitis caused by radiation therapy, burns of the mouth and in other cases.
The remedy is very well tolerated, and only in isolated cases there may be irritation, hives, and if used for a long period longer than 2 weeks, brownish staining of the teeth or tongue may occur, which passes some time after taking the remedy. However, remember that the drug is contraindicated in children under the age of 4 years, pregnant and lactating women.
Adults should refrain from taking alcohol when treating with Theraflu Lar. If alcoholic beverages are consumed, it will increase the absorption of one of the components – benzalkonium chloride into the blood, and reduce its effectiveness in the oral cavity. If you use anionic-active agents, for example, immediately brush your teeth with toothpaste before using this drug, or, on the contrary, spray Teraflu Lar after brushing your teeth, it can also reduce the effectiveness.
Iox – from 8 years
Rating: 4.7

Our grandparents are well aware of the antiseptic action of iodine, in the form of a sweet solution of Lugol. Lugol (Lugol solution in glycerin) was usually applied with a cotton swab wrapped around tweezers or a stick, and it was gently smeared on the tonsils. Children loved it, because it left a lingering sweet taste in the mouth, except that the application procedure was unpleasant. Lugol solution contains inorganic iodine, but Iox spray contains its organic form, so-called povidone iodine, together with allantoin for better application and distribution on the mucosa and better absorption. It contains citric acid, menthol to improve the taste. It also contains ethyl alcohol along with water: it is a red-brown liquid, a modern antiseptic, and after application to the mucosa, povidone iodine decays, releasing elemental, or atomic iodine.
All this allows it to act as an antiseptic, as a prophylactic and anti-inflammatory. Atomic iodine kills fungi, viruses, bacteria, and protozoa. It is used both for prevention and in the treatment of various inflammatory diseases of the ENT organs, the oral cavity, with various forms of catarrhal and purulent inflammation. It is advisable to apply Iox 2 to 4 times a day, but more often in an acute period, for example every 4 hours. The drug is produced in the Czech Republic, and a 30 ml spray costs no more than 250 rubles.
Advantages and disadvantages
As in the previous case, there are quite a few people who are allergic to iodine, and then the remedy will be contraindicated for them. Also it is necessary to be very careful with its prescription and use in case of thyroid pathology in a child, such as hyperthyroidism, because excess iodine in the body may be balanced.
Yox should not be mixed with other antiseptics and means for local treatment of the throat, because the active iodine will “negate” the effect of the other drug. The drug must not be inhaled or swallowed, and should not be used in pregnant or lactating women. It can only be prescribed for children over 8 years of age. But its effectiveness is also quite high, and surpasses that of Ingalipt.
