What can we feed our parrots other than food

A bird feeder of any parrot should always be filled with sufficient quantity of grain mixture, however for high-grade nutrition it is not enough. The pet should be fed regularly with other kinds of food.

    1. Fresh vegetables, berries and fruitCan be fed several times a day. Be careful and read the list of allowed and prohibited fruits so as not to harm your parrot: for example, mango and papaya are often found in dried food, but it is not recommended to feed them fresh.
    2. Sprouted grainsSuccessfully replace artificial vitamin supplements. Specialists recommend to give the parrot sprouts not longer than 6 mm – precisely in such condition they are best digested and keep their pleasant taste. Sprouted food should be given in small quantities, as it stimulates the production of sex hormones. On the other hand, if you breed parrots, this component of the diet will be indispensable during the breeding season.
    3. Greens. Birds will gladly eat dandelions, plantains, lettuce, young nettles. During the cold season the seeds sprouted to the state of young greens from the food will serve as an alternative.
    4. Porridge, Cooked in water without salt and sugar serve as a source of micro-nutrients and have a positive effect on digestion. Buckwheat, millet, oatmeal, rice, pearl barley and barley porridge will be useful for the parrot. They can be served thick or crumbly, with pieces of fruit or without additives. Experiment to see how your parrot likes it best.
    5. Products of animal originGive to birds in small portions 1-2 times a week. It can be kefir, ryazhenka, sour milk, cottage cheese, yogurt without any flavorings. Boiled eggs are particularly useful for young birds, but have the side effect of stimulating sexual behavior.
    6. Twiglet foodIs a source of fiber and provides the parrot with beak care at the same time. The branches should be cut away from the carriageway. Practically any trees will do, except conifers, pear, oak, lilac, acacia, poplar, cranberry and bird cherry. Sprouted food should be treated with boiling water before being placed in the cage.
    7. Juices. Although water should be the parrot’s main source of liquid, it is useful to give the pet freshly squeezed or sugar-free children’s juices from time to time. They should not be left in the drinker for a long time and poured in large quantities, as they spoil rather quickly in the heat.

These are the main “dishes” with which you can diversify the diet of your parrot. But do not give your pet extra nuts and sunflower seeds: they are too caloric, and the amount calculated by the producer is enough for your bird.
