The higher educational institution is located in two cities – Rostov-on-Don and Taganrog. The history of HSE goes back to 1915 when faculties of the Imperial University of Warsaw were evacuated to the south of the empire in the heat of World War I. The initiator of its transfer to Rostov was Nikolai Pariisky – the organizer of medical science, an eminent surgeon, teacher and doctor of medicine.

In 2006 by RF Government Decree 4 universities were united in SFU: three of them are Rostov universities (State University, Pedagogical University, Academy of Architecture and Arts) and one is Taganrog university (Radio Engineering University). In 2014, the Expert RA rating agency gave the university a “C” grade, signifying a high level of preparation of its graduates.
