7 best interchangeable lens cameras

*Review of the best according to the editorial. About the selection criteria. This material is subjective, it is not an advertisement and does not serve as a guide to purchase. Before making a purchase, it is necessary to consult with an expert.

Interchangeable lens cameras have much more “options” in photography than cameras with built-in lenses. Using either lens, you not only get better image quality but you get to choose the direction you want to take your photography in. After all, all the optics are designed for different kinds of shots, ranging from photographing sports events to work with the macro world.

The experts of the online magazine Expertology have analyzed the modern market and identified 7 most noteworthy models of cameras with interchangeable optics.

Selection Criteria

To evaluate the quality and performance of our cameras, we looked at standards set by international researchers Consumers Reports and Cnet. Experts from these reputable organizations detail how to choose the right camera. A team of researchers from Cnet has published the results of camera tests which Expertology took into consideration for comparative analysis.

The experts of the American Consumer Union recommend choosing a camera based on three main factors:

  1. image quality;
  2. ergonomics;
  3. dimensions of the camera.

The first point is quite obvious. All digital cameras have a built in sensor which has a direct impact on the final image quality. And the bigger the sensor size, the better the performance, especially in low light. Some higher priced models have a full frame sensor. If high image quality is important to you, it is worth buying a camera with a full-frame sensor.

In addition, it is advisable to pay attention to the type of flash. Almost all cameras have a built-in flash which is considerably superior to those on smartphones. The flash output of some cameras can be adjusted. If you want to get good pictures in a dimly lit room and you have a hot shoe on the camera body, it is worth buying an external flash. It will make your pictures brighter, but not over-lit, because the “head” of the remote flash tends to rotate in different directions.

Cnet labs do a lot of testing on digital cameras. For example, sensitivity and noise tests. To estimate the amount of noise generated by the camera, researchers start by taking an image of the target, taken with a spectrophotometer (X-Rite Munsell ColorCheker Chart) using daylight-balanced HMI lighting. While setting all ISO sensitivities supported by the camera.

You can set the white balance to manual or day mode, whichever is more accurate. The image is then analyzed to measure the amount of color and luminance noise generated, using software such as Imatest. Images are taken with the lowest available JPEG compression and the highest resolution camera. Default settings such as sharpness, contrast and saturation.

Capop EOS 4000D

Rating: 4.3

Capon EOS 4000D

Let’s start the review with the most budget DSLR model from Sappo. This is an entry level camera and is great for beginner or amateur use. If this is your first time buying a DSLR, it comes with, among other things, a book with a detailed description of how to use it, which will help you learn this camera and understand what it is all about.

Tested user review on Yandex.Market: “A handy, affordable camera for amateurs. Great picture, fast focus, crisp images!”

Usually a kit lens goes with most low-end cameras. In this case it is a standard zoom lens with a focal length of 18-55mm and aperture of f/3.5-5.6. The lens is considered a universal lens, because it is suitable for almost any kind of amateur photography. The camera’s common mount fits all EF and EF-S lenses.

Included with the camera is a LP-E10 battery with a single full charge for about 500 shots without using flash or autofocus. The body of the Sapsop EOS 4000D is made of plastic with a matte finish, which makes the camera does not slip in your hands. The grip is rubberized and easy to grip. The camera is not too big at 129x102x77mm and weighs only 436g along with the battery.

The CMOS sensor with an effective pixel count of 18 million and the DIGIC 4 processor are built into this SLR camera+. It’s worth noting that this isn’t a full-frame sensor with a cropped factor of 1.6, which means the camera will frame the original image. This is not critical and you just need to consider this fact when shooting.

Phase type autofocus includes 9 cross focus points. Not the highest number of points compared to a professional camera, but the fact that they are cross-type couldn’t be more satisfying, since this type of focusing is considered one of the most accurate. In addition, the camera has an autofocus light that allows you to focus in poorly lit areas. Manual focus and face tracking focus are also available.

The TTL mirrored viewfinder covers the field of view by 95% and if you are uncomfortable using the viewfinder it can be replaced 2.With 7 inch LCD screen. Photos can also be quickly transferred to a smartphone using the proprietary app from the company Capop, connecting to the camera via Wi-Fi.

  • lens in the kit;
  • comfortable ergonomics;
  • Wi-Fi;
  • low price;
  • Precise autofocus;
  • Lightweight for a DSLR.

  • Disadvantages are negligible for this price.

Nikon D3500

Rating: 4.4

Nikon D3500

The next camera in our review can also be classified as a “camera for beginners”, but with more advanced functions. It comes with a kit lens, just like the above mentioned Sapp EOS 4000D model. Standard zoom lens at 18-55mm focal length and f/3 aperture.5-5.6.

Extended sensitivity reaches the value of ISO 25600, which is a pretty high figure, and such ISO value is used in the most extreme cases, because the picture quality worsens because of the strong noise. The maximum value of 6400 can be considered working, at that ISO noise and color degradation will be negligible.

Nikon D3500 can be considered quite compact and lightweight among other DSLRs, its weight without batteries is 365g. The camera has comfortable ergonomics, it is pleasant to hold it in hands because of the matte coating and rubberized grip. All the control buttons are located at a short distance, so you can set the desired camera settings with one hand. The camera comes with a great battery that lasts about 1550 photos on a single charge. Autonomy of the previous camera Sapse EOS 4000D in this case will be much more modest.

The continuous shooting speed here reaches 5 fps. That’s pretty solid for an amateur camera. However, such a rapidity this SLR can manifest only in terms of manual focus, in another case the rate will be somewhat lower. Phase autofocus has 11 focus points and only one of them is a cross, which means that only it will work effectively in low light conditions when shooting. The camera is equipped with an autofocus light, which comes in handy in low light.

  • High capacity battery;
  • Convenient ergonomics;
  • Not much weight for a DSLR;
  • Good continuous shooting speed;
  • accurate autofocus;
  • Crisp, sharp shots.

  • Disadvantages are negligible for such a price.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III

Score : 4.5

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III

Not a full-size system camera from Olympus, it can be included in the semi-professional category. Exceptional retro-styled design, reminiscent of film cameras of yesteryear. The model remains current, although it was announced in 2015.

The camera has a built-in sensor

  • ve MOS with 4/3 Four Thirds resolution (17.3h13.0 mm) and 16.1 million. The camera also has a powerful quad-core processor
    uePic VIII, allowing fairly fast frame processing. In terms of sensitivity, it performs well at ISO 3200 and poorly at ISO 6400. If you work with ISO 12800, the degradation of color and outlines will be visible, but the frame can easily be suitable for social networks or even for printing on A4 paper.

    The Olympus Mark III mirrorless camera has a 5-axis matrix stabilizer that allows you to take pictures or shoot video without random fluctuations. The manufacturer says, that this stabilization is able to work up to four steps, and it is true. Shooting handheld photos at a shutter speed of 1 second, you can get a clear shot without any flaws.

    The Olympus Mark III camera model features a full 100% field-of-view electronic viewfinder and includes a 23.6 million pixels. The 3-inch LCD touch screen allows you to shoot photos and videos from different angles, thanks to its upward tilt of 90 degrees and downward tilt of 45 degrees.

    • compact.

    • Low battery capacity.

    Sony Alpha ILCE-6000

    Rating: 4.6

    Sony Alpha ILCE-6000

    The mirrorless camera from Sony belongs to the compact class. Its dimensions of 120x67x45mm and weight of 285g can be considered insignificant with the capabilities that it has. The camera is great for those who actively use social networks and want to get high-quality photos.

    From a review by Yandex.Marketplace with Gadget Inspector status: “Of all the mirrorless cameras today, this is the best camera in all features, rivaled only by Capop’s DSLRs.”.

    The camera has excellent ergonomics. It sits comfortably in your hand and most of the control buttons are conveniently located on the right side of the front of the camera. The electronic viewfinder located in the upper left corner, it includes 1440000 dots and has a 100% coverage of the field of view. The viewfinder also has a built-in sensitive proximity sensor that quickly responds to switching from the display. The LCD tilts up 90 degrees and 45 degrees down, allowing you to shoot photos and videos from your preferred angle.

    This system camera features an APS-C size CMOS sensor (23.5h15.6mm) and an effective pixel count of 24.3 million. For a non full frame camera, this sensor is large and you have to use Sony proprietary optics to realize its full potential.

    Thanks to the large number of pixels, this compact does quite well at high light sensitivities. the extended ISO value reaches 25600, as we’ve already mentioned above you only need to set this value in the most critical cases. ISO 6400 is considered a working ISO, at which the noise or the so-called grain is practically invisible. If you plan to process images in photo editors, an ISO value of 12800 can also be considered acceptable.

    The mirrorless camera Sony Alpha ILCE-6000 has a function of high-speed continuous shooting – 11 fps. Such high speed can boast, for example, professional reportage cameras from the company Canon. Another significant advantage of this camera can be considered a hybrid type of autofocus, which includes 179 focus points. Under good light conditions the camera rarely misses the focus.

    • comfortable ergonomics;
    • swiveling screen;
    • A sensor with a large number of pixels;
    • high continuous shooting speed;
    • The sensor works at high ISO settings;
    • compactness;
    • Accurate and fast autofocus operation.

    • Relatively expensive optics for the camera.

    Fujifilm X-T30

    Rating: 4.7

    Fujifilm X-T30

    The Fujifilm X-T30 system camera belongs to the semi-professional technique. It comes in three colors: silver, classic black and charcoal gray. The camera weighs only 383g including the battery, and thanks to its small size, it can easily fit in a bag or even a pocket. The main idea of the manufacturer is to give the photographer as many flagship features as possible, while keeping the camera compact and affordable.

    This system camera has a CMOS IV sensor with an effective pixel count of 26.1 million and the proprietary X-Trans filter to avoid moiré effects in your images. Moire is a wavy pattern formed by superimposing periodic patterns on top of each other. The same sensor is found in Fujifilm brand professional cameras like the X-T4 and X-T3. Powerful X-Processor 4 allows the camera to shoot 4K video without cropping, and supports high-speed continuous shooting up to 30 frames per second.

    Hybrid type autofocus with as many as 425 focus points covering the entire sensor. Which means that the camera won’t focus only in the center of the frame or in a limited area, as DSLRs usually do. This mirror-less camera has a fast and accurate autofocus which focuses not only on faces but also on the eyes.

    This camera’s electronic viewfinder is quite bright with a good resolution of 2.36 MP and full 100% field of view coverage. The Fujifilm X-T30 is a mirrorless camera, which means that when you’re looking at the VF, you can tell in advance what kind of shot you’ll get. The 3 inch LCD touch screen has a handy flip down design that allows you to shoot from low and high vantage points. The monitor is also equipped with quick gesture controls that can invoke almost any setting or function.

    The mirror-less design allows you to use a variety of professional-grade Fujinon optics with a special adaptor. You can find 30 or more lenses ranging from the compact 15-45mm zoom lens to the incredible 200mm fixed telephoto lens.

    • Powerful X-Processor 4;
    • CMOS IV X-Trans Sensor;
    • Fast and accurate autofocus;
    • touch sensitive rotary display;
    • it is possible to use different types of lenses thanks to the adapter;
    • Wi-Fi synchronization.

    • One memory card slot.

    Pentax KP

    Most Pentax cameras are known for their rugged construction and the model we will review is no exception. This DSLR is dust and waterproof and can operate at low temperatures down to -10 degrees. In addition, the body of the camera is made of metal, which significantly adds weight to the unit – 699g.

    This camera has an APS-C sensor with 24 effective pixels.32 million. It is one of the few sensors that can suppress the moire effect in the frame without the help of various filters. The sensor performs micro vibration at around a thousand cycles per second, after which the processor restores the image. The sensor can also pivot along the optical axis and capture images with a straight horizon even if the camera is held at a tilt of up to 5 degrees.

    As for sensitivity, everything is quite interesting because the manufacturer has given this camera a phenomenal aperture ratio. The extended ISO value reaches as high as 892200. In fact, ISO 6400 is a good working parameter; in this case, the color and outlines of the image are not critically spoiled. At 12800 there is more noise and the picture is good only for social networking. The picture taken with ISO 892200 clearly shows the appearance of numerous grains, but what is surprising is that there is no strong color degradation. The secret is the additional co-processor with a buffer, which speeds up all the work of the camera and helps to process images faster and more accurately.

    The phase-type autofocus includes 27 focus points and 25 of them are cross-type, allowing you to focus more accurately and without blunders. The camera has an autofocus light, but even in low light, phase autofocus works pretty quickly. The camera is equipped with a 5-axis matrix stabilizer that helps avoid unwanted vibrations during photo and video shooting. In addition, the Pentax KR has an additional mode for astrophotography (Astrotracer), which works with the help of GPS. This feature is designed for photographing stars.

    • waterproofing;
    • continues to work at low temperatures;
    • 5-axis matrix stabilization;
    • CMOS sensor that suppresses the moiré effect;
    • The sensor works at high ISO settings;
    • has an Astrotracer mode;
    • Precise autofocus.

    • autofocus doesn’t work fast enough in

    Sony Alpha ILCE-6600

    Rating: 4.9

    Sony Alpha ILCE-6600

    We finish our review with a compact camera from Sony. This camera is the flagship of the 6,000th line and simultaneously the flagship of all mirrorless APS-C-format cameras of this brand. With this camera you can use a lot of lenses as specialty lineup as well as most other Sony optics thanks to LA-EA 1 adapter.

    From a Yandex review.Marketplace with “Gadget Inspector” status: “Comfortable grip, powerful battery, good stabilizer, space video, and the best autofocus” – as reported in the reviews for this camera by a Yandex Market user who has the status of “Gadget Inspector”.

    The camera has a CMOS sensor with an effective pixel count of 24.2 million. Sensor performs well with high light sensitivity. This camera model has an additional lower ISO to 50 and this has a good effect on shooting in bright locations. The downward ISO sensitivity does not increase noise because it is a division, not a multiplication, of the signal strength at a lower sensitivity value. The difference in brightness from neighboring pixels does not increase, but decreases on the contrary.

    The body is slightly larger than its predecessor (6,000th model). It sits comfortably in your hand thanks to its rubberized grip and the 2280mAh NP-FZ100 battery. Also features a near 3-inch wide, tilting multi-touch display and an electronic viewfinder with a full-angle field of view.

    Hybrid type autofocus includes as much as 425 focus points. The Alpha ILCE-6600 has a fast tracking focus during photos and videos. The autofocus is great at clinging to the subject and even tracks it by eye. The camera also has backlighting and focus correction, which allows you to shoot with great accuracy in low-light areas, as well as when the subject is moving quickly. The camera has a built-in 5-axis matrix stabilizer that works in all 5 steps. Thanks to this stabilization you can avoid a minimum of hand shake when you are shooting.

    • The ISO speed range starts at 50;
    • high-capacity battery;
    • fast autofocus tracking;
    • 50-axis matrix stabilization;
    • ergonomics;
    • has a headphone jack.
