Lightweight laptops and ultrabooks are a special category of portable computers. Everything here is done for the sake of this very portability, to minimize the weight and thickness of the device. In this regard, these devices are almost 100% not equipped with optical drives. But it’s “no great loss” when you consider how dramatically user interest in DVDs has fallen in recent years. Expertology experts have studied the current market and offered their own rating of the lightest laptops with the best characteristics.

The best lightweight laptops under 13.3 in
The first group of lightweight laptops in the review are the devices with the smallest screen diagonal, which still fit into the category of full-fledged laptops rather than super-compact netbooks. Four lightweight laptops caught our experts’ eye.
Apple MacBook Mid 2017
Opens the group with the novelty of 2017 from a manufacturer that needs no introduction with a screen diagonal of 12 inches. Linear dimensions are 281×197×13 mm, weight is only 920 g.
Let’s tell you right away, this notebook comes in two versions: one based on the Core m3 processor from Intel, the other on the Core i5 from the same manufacturer. They also differ in hard drive capacity (using SSD only): the first has 256 GB, the second – 512 GB. The “older” model increases in price very significantly – up to 30%.
The case design is almost unchanged from the same series in 2016, but there was not much to change – in this respect Apple products are almost all flawless. The same full-size backlit island-type keyboard and the same large touchpad are still present.
Wired communications are packed into a single USB-C (Thunderbolt 3) connector. That means connecting to a network or any peripherals (HDMI 1.4, standard VGA, twisted pair with RJ-45 connector) is only possible through third-party adapters. Combined microphone input and headphone output present.
Other important points in the electronic “stuffing” of the device are as follows: graphics subsystem – HD Graphics 615, 850 MHz from Intel; screen resolution – 2304×1440, 226 ppi, matrix type – IPS. Equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11a and Bluetooth 4.0.
- Image brand №1 in the world – Apple;
- Speed, reliability and stability inherent in Apple products;
- weighs less than a kilogram;
- impeccable image with a deep “real” black color;
- possible only within individual preferences (brand, operating system, etc.). d).
ASUS ZenBook 13 UX331UN
Now in the rating from Expertology we present a laptop, which in terms of “elitism” is not so much inferior to Apple. We are talking about a real masterpiece of ASUS – ZenBook 13 UX331UN business model.
The heart of this beauty is a Kaby Lake-R CPU, the eighth generation Intel Core. Two basic basic modifications – based on Core i5 and i7 (4 cores, frequency from 1.6 to 1.8 GHz). In total, there are eight modifications within this series, differing in the type of processor, hard drive capacity, screen resolution and some other parameters.
The linear dimensions of the device is 310x216x13.9 mm, weight – 1.12 kg. Screen diagonal – 13.3. The screen resolution is offered in two versions: 1920×1080 or 3840×2160. NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2GB memory, GDDR5 memory type. Comes with 8GB to 16GB RAM. Hard disk only SSD from 128 GB to 1 TB.
The possibilities for interaction with peripherals are as follows. A slot for external flash cards (microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC are supported). Wireless connection is presented by Wi-Fi modules 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1 or 4.2. There are interfaces USB 3.0 and HDMI. There is a microphone input and headphone output Combo.
The battery capacity of this laptop is 50Wh, which allows the ultrabook to work up to 14 hours, depending on the mode and the specific modification.
- premium class;
- long battery life;
- a wide choice of modifications;
- Nice keyboard stroke;
- No obvious disadvantages noted.
HP Spectre 13-af000
This group continues with a compact ultrabook from Hewlett-Packard, the American electronics and peripherals manufacturer with the deepest and richest history. By the number of modifications HP Spectre 13-af000 model is even more expanded – they are offered more than ten, so that everyone can pick up exactly what he needs.
The size of the device – 308.2h224.2h10.4 mm, weight of 1.11 kg. The screen diagonal is 13.3 inches. Exactly the same as the previous model offers two screen resolution options – 1920×1080 or 3840×2160. Matrix type – IPS. Important feature – touch screen with support for m

- teBook 840 G5
And the review is completed by an extremely interesting model of light notebook, which in terms of modification options and the range of possibilities even without difficulty gives way to the previous notebook from Hewlett-Packard.
The size of the device does not depend on the modification – 304x200x15 mm. Weight – 1.2 kg. The screen has a diagonal of 13.3 inches, the resolution of the matrix is offered in two versions – 1920×1080 and 3200×1800 pixels. The graphics module is integrated, but depending on the modification it could be any of the three options – GMA HD, HD Graphics 620 or Iris Plus Graphics 640 – all three from Intel.
The variety of modifications is already impressive at the level of the main thing – the CPU. The choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 (2 or 4 cores, frequencies from 1.6 to 2.7 GHz), and this choice most significantly affects the final cost. This is a definite plus DELL XPS 13 9360. Comes with RAM from 4 GB to 16 GB in volume. The hard SSD drive, like the previous laptop, is available in a wide range of capacities, from 128GB to 1TB.
As for interfaces, the situation is as follows. There are two connectors USB 3.0, one Thunderbolt 3. The developers have pleased the presence of a slot for reading flash cards, but disappointed lack of HDMI output.
The capacity of the standard battery is as much as 60Wh.
- A very high capacity battery;
- Exceptional variability of modifications;
- backlit keyboard;
- There is a slot for flash cards;
- No HDMI output.
As for the graphics module, here Spectre 13-af000 is a little weaker – the video card is only integrated UHD Graphics 620 from Intel. But the notebook is by no means a gaming notebook, so it can hardly be considered a serious disadvantage.
The key parameters of the electronics are as follows. The central processor is a 4-core Core i5 or i7, depending on the modification, with a frequency of 1.6 to 1.8 GHz. Comes with 8GB to 16GB LPDDR3 type RAM. Hard drive – SSD with 256GB to 1TB.
In terms of communication and peripherals, the situation is as follows. Wireless modules Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are present (where without them), but here’s a slot for reading external flash cards in this laptop is not, and many note this as a minus. At least there’s a USB 3 interface.1 and two Thunderbolt 3 connectors.
Battery capacity is 43.7Wh, which is equivalent to a nominal 10 hours of runtime.
Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 13.3″ 2017
Score : 4.6
Rounding out this group of ratings is the “heaviest” model, if that term applies to ultralight Ultrabooks at all. Still, the device weighs 1.3 kg – the heaviest weight in this group. Linear dimensions – 309.6h210.9h14.8mm. The screen size is 13.3 inches, the resolution is 1920×1080 pixels.
The manufacturer offers only a few modifications of the laptop, which differ in type of processor (dual-core Core i5 or i7 with a core of Kaby Lake and a frequency of 2500 or 2700 MHz) and the amount of hard drive (from 128 to 256 GB, SSD).
The graphics card in this ultrabook is discrete (a definite plus compared to the previous notebook) – NVIDIA GeForce MX150 with 2 GB of RAM. RAM is 8GB DDR4. A set of wireless communication modules is standard – Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.1.
Two USB 3 connectors are built in for communication with peripherals.0 Type A and one Type-C, there is an HDMI output. Microphone input and headphone output Combo. Fingerprint scanner installed.
The battery capacity of this laptop is 40Wh, which corresponds to the conditional nominal 8 hours of battery life.
The best lightweight laptops up to 14 inches
The second group in our ranking is a mixed group – these are thin, lightweight laptops with a slightly larger screen – up to 14 inches. In this group our experts also included four lightweight laptops from different manufacturers. A larger diagonal, as a rule, automatically implies a slightly larger device, but does not necessarily affect its weight. There is no direct correlation, and it all depends on the manufacturer’s technological solutions.
Acer SWIFT 5 (SF514-52T)
The first item in this group is the super light Ultrabook from Acer. Its linear dimensions are 329x228x14.9 mm, and the weight is less than a kilogram, to be exact – 970 g. Diagonal screen size – 14 inches. Readymade modifications of this model manufacturer offers very little and they differ in the minimum – the amount of RAM and hard drive, the shade of the body.
The screen resolution of the SWIFT 5 is 1920×1080, the matrix is IPS. The coating is glossy, and that, as always, users are polarized – both as a plus and a minus. But last but not least, glossiness is the other side of an important advantage – a touch screen with m
The central processor in the laptop is a 4-core Core i7 with a frequency of 1.8GHz. The graphics module is integrated – HD Graphics 620 from Intel. Comes with 8GB to 16GB LPDDR3-type RAM. Hard disk drive – SSD, capacity – 256 to 512 GB.
For communication with peripheral devices there are two USB 3 outlets.0 and HDMI video output. Standard microphone input and Combo headphone output.
The standard battery capacity of this notebook is 4670 mAh – corresponding to a nominal 8 hours of battery life.
Apple MacBook Pro 13
Continues the rating from Expertology – the “king” of the market of portable computers. In this case, the Cupertinians offer only a couple of modifications, which differ minimally. Linear dimensions of the ultrabook – 304.1h212.4h14.9 mm, weight – 1.37 lbs. Screen diagonal – 13.3, resolution – 2560×1600 pixels. Metal enclosure.
Created laptop based on a 2-core Intel Core i5 CPU with a frequency of 2.3 GHz. Graphics module is integrated – Iris Plus Graphics 640 by Intel. Comes with 8GB LPDDR3 type RAM. The hard drive is an SSD, with a choice of two capacities, 128GB or 256GB.
In terms of connection with peripherals in this notebook the situation is as follows. As for flash card reader slots, no surprises – there are no slots. There are two Thunderbolt 3 interfaces and a standard combo input/output for microphone and headphones. Wireless connectivity is represented by standard Wi-Fi modules 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2.
Laptop battery capacity is 54.5Wh, which implies a nominal 10 hours of battery life.
