The best inexpensive graphics and computing graphics cards
Let’s conditionally divide our short review into two categories according to affordability of video cards, and let’s start with relatively inexpensive. Let’s warn at once that they are not expensive really relatively, and cost tens of thousands of roubles. However, given the current market conditions in 2020, there is not much to choose from.
HP Quadro NVS 315 PCI-E 1024Mb 64 bit
Rating: 4.9

Let us first take a look at the most affordable professional graphics and computing graphics card from Hewlett-Packard. It is really not expensive if you compare it with even an average gaming card, but it is many times more expensive than office “plugs”. The NVS 315 processor itself was first released by nVidia a relatively long time ago – in 2013, but graphics cards based on it are still relevant and in demand. The video processor is codenamed GF119, made by 40nm processor.
Specifically, this model and its “relatives” are used mainly in medium and large enterprises, where production is connected with the operation of complex graphic design systems.
The card has a DVI video output, supports NVIDIA Mosaic technology and comes with specialized software for desktop manipulation. Supports up to two monitors at resolutions up to 2560×1600. Every HP Quadro NVS 315 graphics card undergoes rigorous quality control and extensive testing on leading commercial applications.
Now let’s analyze the most important technical characteristics of graphics cards. It’s a low profile model, it has one slot and connects to the PCI-E version 2 slot of the motherboard.0. The CPU base frequency is 550MHz. The 875 MHz GDDR3-video memory is 1GB. 400MHz RAMDAC frequency. 64 bit memory bus.
In terms of firmware and compatibility with operating systems and applications this model supports the well-known standards and technologies DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1.
The device does not require any additional power supply. Indigenous heat dissipation is rated at
20W. Active cooling – small fan on the heatsink covering almost the whole area of the board.
This model is covered by a 36-month manufacturer’s warranty.

MSI Radeon RX 5700 1610MHz PCI-E 4.0 8192Mb 14000MHz 256 Bit 3xDisplay
Rating: 4.8

The second professional graphics card in a selection of relatively inexpensive models – a product of the Taiwanese brand MSI (Micro-Star International Co., Ltd), which is known for its quality computer components and not only.
Considerably more powerful graphics card than the previous one and several times more expensive. It’s bigger, more massive and requires more active cooling, so it has two fans on the heatsink at once. Besides it needs additional power supply besides the one from PCI-E 16x 4 slot.0. For additional power supply on the board there are pins 8-pin and second 8-pin.
As for the scope of application, this model originally made more emphasis on computing, but marketing analysts have decided not to lose the gaming audience. That’s why in its description you often see the word “Gaming”. Equally it has been in great demand among cryptocurrency miners due to its strong computing component.
The key technical characteristics of the device are. The system is based on the Navi 10 XL graphics processor (AMD Radeon RX 5700). Created by the latest 7nm processor. Runs at a frequency of 1610MHz.
The device supports up to 4 monitors simultaneously. Can provide maximum resolution of 7680×4320 thanks to the 8GB of video memory – GDDR6 type, frequency 1.4GHz at 256-bit bus. S is supported
Three DisplayPort 1 interfaces are available.4, one HDMI 2.0b, HDCP supported. As mentioned above, the card needs additional power. But that’s not all, because the power supply of the system unit of a desktop computer must be powerful – at least 750W. The graphics card has a high

NY Quadro P2000 PCI-E 3.0 5120Mb 160bit HDCP
Rating: 4.7
The “budget” part of the review continues with a video card with a slightly different specialization and focus – less for gaming and more for work, although it still has a decent amount of memory and costs a lot. Produced by American company PNY Technologies. Half of the video cards in our review will be of this brand as for professional environment of designers and planners they are objectively the best as of 2020.
The vendor does not give any details about the exact size of the video card, but it does not matter as it is an objectively compact and takes only one slot. Even the cooling system looks modest with only one and a small fan on the radiator. All this is a consequence of good optimization, low power consumption and very low
75W which just doesn’t compare to the previous model.
Based on the GP106GL graphics chip, 16nm process technology. Connects to the motherboard via the PCI-E 16x slot 3.0 and requires no additional power supply. Installed video memory capacity – 5Gb GDDR5 on 160-bit bus.

NY Quadro 5000 513Mhz PCI-E 2.0 2560Mb 3000Mhz 320 bit DVI
Rating: 4.7
And the first part of this review closes with a relatively low-priced professional graphics card, also from PNY, only a bit different and less pretentious.
The secret here is that the capabilities of the card itself need not be the only limitation for professional activities. Graphics cards are often used in tandem with standalone gas pedals, which are not graphics cards per se, but when combined with them when working with complex graphics and scientific calculations can multiply the effect. We will take a look at an example of such a discrete gas pedal in the second part of this article.
PNY Quadro 5000 is based on the graphics chip of the same name by nVidia code-named GF100 (clock frequency 513 MHz). Manufactured on 40nm process technology. Connects to your motherboard’s PCI-E 16x 2 slot.0. Although the process technology is a generation older than some of the neighboring models, the chip heats up moderately
152W. The card needs additional power for that, so there is a 6pin connector.
Graphics card supports up to two monitors. Dual DisplayPort, DVI-I and even VESA Stereo come standard. The maximum possible monitor resolution is 2560×1600. The card has 2GB of video memory. The memory type is GDDR5 running at 3 GHz. The memory bus 320-bit. RAMDAC frequency 400MHz. Built in full support for S
- /CrossFire.
A few words about the math block. In this model we have 352 arithmetic logic devices, fifth version of shaders, 16x anisotropic filtering. The FSAA limit is 64 times.
Like all modern graphics cards PNY Quadro 5000 has OpenGL 4 support.0 and DirectX 11.
We would like to underline once again that PNY Quadro 5000 specifications may look a bit “pale” compared to the above-described models, but again, in combination with discrete gas pedal this model is capable of a lot, both in terms of creating the most complex polygonal 3D graphics, as well as for extremely complex calculations.
Advantages
- Reliability and sensitivity to many systems;
- The efficient work in tandem with discrete gas pedals;
- Relatively low power consumption;
- moderate
;
- Relatively affordable price.
Disadvantages
- Not the highest maximum resolution;
- Relatively limited performance due to obsolescence.
The best premium graphics and computing graphics cards
Expertology magazine’s second pick of the best graphics and computing graphics cards represents the brightest models to impress even the layman. Here our experts have not made any price limits, but only considered top graphics cards available on the Russian market.
Sapphire FirePro S9150 PCI-E 3.0 16384Mb 512 bit
Rating: 4.9
Let’s start the premium part of the review of the best graphics and computing graphics cards by Expertology with a model that is highly regarded by professionals. This graphics card has an even more limited specialization than others – it’s a so-called server graphics card, and it has a serious emphasis on computing capabilities.
This graphics gas pedal is based on the powerful FirePro S9150 processor from AMD, codenamed Hawaii XT. Manufactured using 28nm process technology. Capable of generating up to 5.07 teraflops of processing power. In terms of watts of power consumption the graphics card gives out 21.6 GFLOPS, a record in this class.
Let’s look at the rest of the technical characteristics of the device. The memory capacity is set to 16384MB, the memory type is GDDR5 on 512-bit bus. The memory is “fast” – running at 5GHz. 320GB/sec throughput.
The math module of the graphics card features 2816 universal processors, 176 texture blocks, 64 rasterization blocks, fifth version of shaders. It supports OpenGL 4.4 and DirectX 12.
This card has relatively moderate power consumption, but the power it gets from the slot is not enough to work properly. That’s why it has two 8pin and 6pin slots for extra power.
The graphics card heats up a lot when you work under heavy load. Its
Estimated to be 235W. But this is mostly due to the passive cooling system. For the server version, the developers decided to implement this approach, hoping that the heat dissipation will be done by a more powerful cooling system of the server itself.
Advantages
- A record computing power in this class;
- Reliable and durable;
- server;
- Relatively moderate power consumption;
- more or less affordable price for such a computing potential.
Disadvantages
- It gets very hot because of passive cooling.
NY Tesla K40 745Mhz PCI-E 3.0 12288Mb 6000Mhz 384 bit Silent
Rating: 4.8
The next brightest model in our review is the Tesla K40 by PNY. Its price is able to impress even the most experienced gamers, but if we are talking about working with really serious calculations then this investment will definitely pay off, especially if we are talking not about an individual user, but about a company.
And let us first say that it is not quite a video card, but exactly the gas pedal we were talking about above. Simply put, it is the center of mathematical calculations for the video card. Such a device needs to be paired in operation with a video card (Tesla works best with professional graphics cards of Quadro family), and then the graphics stream will go through the video card with all the amazing effects expected in terms of performance, speed, stability. So you can get a “monstrous”, in a good sense, computing power of 3-3.5 teraflops at home. Emphasize – at home, not in the data center, where the capacity can be higher. Of course, such solutions are simply blasphemous to use for computer games. The lot of PNY Tesla K40 is to process high quality video footage at 4K resolution or even higher, but more importantly – the most complex deep learning calculations. For rendering complex 3D graphics in Maya, 3ds Max and similar tasks it is better to consider another model.
Let’s go straight to the technical parameters of the card. At the heart of the video card is the Tesla K40 GPU, codenamed GK110B by nVidia. Manufactured using 28nm process technology. Runs at 745MHz. Processor architecture with 2880 arithmetic and logic units.
Graphics gas pedal supports DirectX 11.2. It has 12GB of GDDR5 RAM. The memory is “fast” – running at 6GHz, the bus is 384-bit. Supported S
- /CrossFire.
Advantages
- power;
- high professional class;
- Exceptional performance and performance in deep learning;
- reliability and stability.
Disadvantages
- Less suitable for graphics than all previous models.
NY Quadro RTX 6000 PCI-E 3.0 24576Mb 384 bit (VCQRTX6000-PB)
Rating: 4.8
And to round out Expertology’s review of the best professional graphics and computing graphics cards, the most powerful and capable model on the market in 2020, which even some are afraid to pick up because of its insanely high price tag. Indeed, the price tag is way over 400 thousand. Roubles and reaches in some points of sale up to half a million. But, that’s the objective price to pay for a high professional level.
Let’s write out the main technical characteristics of the video card. The processor is built on the Turing architecture; its code name is TU102. Created by a super-slim 12nm process. Runs at standard clock speed 1.44GHz. Boost processor acceleration mode is supported under Boost technology up to 1.77GHz. RAM it has as much as 24GB. The most advanced memory type today – GDDR6. 384-bit memory bus. Memory operates at an unprecedented 14GHz and provides 672GB of throughput per second.
Translating all these parameters into a more applied language, we can say that the graphics card in combination with all other adequate hardware in a computer can provide texturing speed up to 509.8 gigatexels per second.
Physically the graphics card is 267mm long and plugs into a motherboard PCIe 3 slot.0 x16. Such immense power requires additional power supply, of course. For this purpose, the card has two jacks – 6-pin and 8-pin.
To connect your monitor card has 4 DisplayPort interface, and in addition there is a USB Type-C port.
Advantages
- exceptional production quality;
- 12nm;
- exclusive technology;
- 24GB RAM;
- The highest speed memory;
