*Review of the best according to the editors. About the selection criteria. This material is subjective, not an advertisement and does not constitute a guide to purchase. Consultation with a specialist is required before purchase.
Looking for a laptop for study, students and their parents are often faced with difficulties of choice in a rich variety of market. Against this background, it is easy to miss the important points that may later create inconvenience, and even buy something more suitable for the needs of a particular specialty and features of the educational process.
The editorial staff of Expertology magazine presents you the current review of laptops, which can be considered the best for studies at the beginning of 2021. To a large extent our evaluation criteria coincided with the opinions of our Western colleagues from PC Mag, TechRadar, DigitalTrends and other expert communities.
How to choose a laptop for study
Before we proceed to review the recommended models, let us briefly describe the principles that should be followed when choosing a laptop for study. Here, too, we have studied the experience and opinion of experts from the above publications and compared it to the Russian reality.
Specialization
First of all we must define in general terms, what class notebook should be by its functionality. If we are talking about a liberal arts student, the most inexpensive version with basic electronics will be enough. If we are talking about engineering specialties, where you have to work with software for the design and creation of three-dimensional models, then the requirements will be significantly higher. For such new specialties as game development, you may even need a gaming laptop, and we will consider the best option for such purposes.
Rugged case
A point that not everyone pays attention to, whereas for a student this property is greatly underestimated. In the cheapest laptops the plastic is often quite weak and fragile, the moving parts are quickly subjected to “fatigue”, and the surface of the keys lightning abrasion.
If you have some opportunity to allocate a little more budget, you should try to look for a model with a metal casing or at least with not the cheapest plastic.
Bright screen, glare protection
For the student who may often spend time not only in the classroom but also in open spaces, screen brightness may be even more important than resolution and color rendering. The same goes for glare protection. This point should not be neglected, because the “mirror” screen will simply greatly limit the space for possible activities.
Battery life
Here it seems that we have no comments but we do have some. Of course, the battery capacity of under 90Wh will solve all problems, but such laptops are few and they cost about 2 thousand. US dollars. In most cases the battery capacity is still in the 40-50Wh range. And if such a battery is installed on an ultrabook with a 13-inch screen, it may well last the whole day, even under quite unremarkable loads. The 15-inch diagonal combined with a powerful processor will reduce battery life dramatically.
Approach the issue as rationally as possible – if the battery is not the most capacity, but the laptop has the ability to charge via USB Type-C, it will be a good compromise, because you do not need to carry a charger, and instead it will be more appropriate powerbank.
Dimensions and weight
Here too, everything is quite obvious – the lighter the laptop, the more transportable, and the thinner, the more comfortable and generally more pleasant to use. According to American standards an ultrabook is considered a laptop weighing up to 3 pounds. That’s about 1.5 kg, and you can see by the weight of any MacBook Air, that manufacturers strictly adhere to this rule.
The exception will be those cases where powerful graphics are needed for learning. Then a discrete graphics card and cooling will inevitably add both weight and size to the notebook, again excluding the most expensive premium models.
Performance
In terms of CPU, memory and hard drive selection, everything is strictly individual. The more complex the software is within the study of a particular specialty, the more powerful electronics will be needed. The only unequivocal recommendation is that a solid state hard drive SSD is highly desirable. The nature of laptop use in the life of a student is very dynamic, to say the least, and mechanical HDD is extremely sensitive to falls.
Kensington lock slot
And to conclude the brief set of recommendations another point that is not obvious to everyone. Sometimes you have to leave the notebook unattended at your own risk. To minimize this risk, a simple attachment is enough – a Kensington lock and a slot in the laptop for it.

The best inexpensive laptops for studying
For learning, the most basic laptop with basic specifications is often enough. Many specialties will require only work with office programs and Internet browser. Numerous add-ons can often be even superfluous, if you consider the laptop strictly as a tool for learning.
So among the most inexpensive models there are enough options for a student. These “workhorses” never win any sound contests, and rarely deserve any attention at all from top reviewers. But they are also the most mass-produced.
Acer Extensa 15 EX215-31-C3FF
Rating: 4.5

Let’s start the review with the version which is the cheapest even in the budget category. For its affordable price this model even earned the distinctive title of “anti-crisis” notebook. In the Extensa lineup, this entire series is categorized by the manufacturer as “thin and light” notebooks weighing less than 2kg.
This modification – EX215-31-C3FF – is one of the cheapest in the series, but not the minimum. We still preferred the variant with a screen F
- lHD 1920×1080 rather than the usual HD. In 2021, a smaller F screen

- m 7 15
Rating: 4.8
We finish our selection with an unusual model, which clearly belongs in the category of premium laptops. It is unusual in that it is a laptop-transformer, capable of unfolding and folding backwards. In terms of price, it balances on the edge of medium to high price, but since there is an option to choose a minimum configuration cheaper than the equivalent of $1,000, we consider it conditionally mid-price.
HP Envy x360 series is in the top 10 “The Best Laptops for College Students in 2021” from PC Magazine, one of the most famous and respected publications dedicated to computer hardware. The magazine has been published since 1982 and in addition to the U.S. it is localized to many countries from Europe to Australia and Latin America.
So, since it’s a transformer, it can, in reverse folded form, work as a tablet. That is, it is obvious that the screen in this model is touchscreen. Diagonal – 13.3 inches, resolution – F
- HD 1920×1080, IPS matrix.
- m 7 15, but it’s also worthy – 51Wh. Given the smaller screen and lower power consumption in general, on this battery the laptop can work up to 12 hours, depending on the mode. Can be charged via Type-C.
From the review of Yandex.Market with “Level 5 Gadget Inspector” status: “Was pleasantly surprised by the loading speed. Turns on almost instantly, runs fast. Build quality on par. Picture quality is not bad at all. In the mid price range can definitely be recommended.
Disadvantages
- a complete transformer;
- The most compact in the selection;
- touch screen;
- The image quality and the brightness reserve of the IPS screen;
- High-performance RAM;
- Minimum weight of 1.32kg;
- operating time – up to 12 hours.
Disadvantages
- no fundamental flaws or systematic criticisms found.
The best premium laptops for studying
The final selection of the review of the best laptops for study according to Expertology magazine is traditionally the most interesting. It is dedicated to the most expensive models, and these are, quite expectedly, top solutions that embody the most advanced high-tech ideas.
This notebook for those students, whose parents are not experiencing problems with limited budget. And it’s not just a question of prestige in front of your peers. For some majors, where you have to work with complicated engineering software or extensive calculations, high performance multiplied by mobility will be a big learning advantage.
In addition to receiving high marks from our experts, all four models are listed in the latest The best student laptops 2021: all the best options for school, published by TechRadar, the top UK publication dedicated to high tech.
Acer Swift 3 SF314-57
Rating: 4.8
Let’s start with the most “modest” option – the Swift series ultrabook by Acer. We will consider the top configuration based on Intel Core i7 1065G7 processor.
Ultrabook is almost universal, and if it had had any powerful discrete graphics card, the manufacturer would have no doubt “written” it in the category of gaming. But it’s still the usual Intel UHD Graphics integrated into the processor.
A modest graphics card is not a disadvantage because the emphasis in this model is on minimum size and weight. The laptop is no more than 16 mm thick and weighs less than 1mm.2kg. The chassis is part metal, the 14-inch screen looks very attractive thanks to the thinnest side bezels. The screen is IPS, the resolution is F
- lHD 1920×1080.
- slim and lightweight;
- the metal casing;
- A high-quality matrix with good color reproduction;
- Extremely fast RAM;
- Top performance overall;
- a premium set of interfaces;
- Wi-Fi 6 generation;
- Up to 12 hours of battery life.
- Unfortunate decision with the location and appearance of the power button.
- prestigious, status brand;
- high resolution and color rendering of the screen;
- Top-of-the-line ergonomics;
- metal case;
- The most comfortable and responsive touchpad;
- exceptional performance;
- stability and smooth operation;
- battery life up to 18 hours;
- Wi-Fi 6th generation 802.11ax and Bluetooth 5.0;
- high liquidity.
- limitations typical of Apple products and the subjective view of users.
- Impeccable image quality;
- Brightness up to 500 lux;
- resolution 2.5K in maximum package;
- The choice of modifications based on different processors;
- top performance;
- High-quality sound with DTS Audio support;
- Two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 functionality;
- Up to 15 hours of battery life;
- stylus included.
- Little details about ergonomics.
- winner of a number of 2020 contests and awards;
- Matrix options, including 4K and OLED;
- Impeccable image (only the best matrix even in the minimal configuration);
- case materials and design;
- The choice of matrix IPS or OLED;
- There is a modification with 97Wh battery.
- Sometimes there are problems with preinstalled drivers, may need to be reinstalled.
The processor we mentioned, but it is also worth mentioning that there is 16GB of RAM and the frequency is one of the highest – 3733 MHz. The hard drive is definitely a joy too – 1TB SSD. There are quite a lot of modifications of this series and if you want you can pick up a model with less memory, but the top configuration is this.
Depending on the modification, the battery capacity varies from 48 to 50Wh. This, remember, a very impressive figure, providing up to 12 hours of power in mixed mode.
What else is fully realized here, so it is a set of interfaces. Although the ports themselves are not enough, because they do not allow the size, but there are all the highest standards – USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C with Thunderbolt 3 functionality, HDMI, Gen 6 Wi-Fi 802.11ax, Bluetooth 5.0.
Users appreciate in this model all the qualities that the manufacturer itself developed to a greater extent – minimum weight, speed, premium appearance and assembly, usability. The only systematic criticism about the latter is the inconvenient location of the power button. It’s flush with the regular keys and visually no different from them, causing false clicks.

Disadvantages
Apple MacBook Air 13 Late 2020
Rating: 4.8
The second thin and light notebook in this selection needs no advertising – it’s the MacBook Air 2020. The only dumb question is why it is not the most expensive in this group. But, it’s still the Air, which by definition is cheaper than the MacBook Pro.
In this ultrabook is also difficult to single out one obvious advantage, because there are many, and one is more important than the other. Even with all the skepticism about how overrated Apple technology is, it’s worth saying that in terms of optimization, stability, predictability and uptime, MacBooks are still second to none. Even after years of active use there won’t be any noticeable speed loss due to the careful initial development of the operating system to protect it from bugs and malicious influences.
The second, and for many, the first is ergonomics. Many manufacturers have long been trying to emulate Apple ultrabooks in everything – the laconic design, the nature of the controls, the maximum “airiness”, all combined with maximum performance. Everyone does it – Xiaomi, Asus, Lenovo, almost without exception. But still the trendsetter and standard setter is Apple. Take for example the same “macbook test” – already mentioned in the review of Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 gaming model the property of opening with one hand. It’s still called a “macbook” test, not an “IdeaPad” test.
finally, performance. In Apple laptops we still see a rare combination of highly optimized hardware and an equally filigree software component. It gives you the same or even better performance than comparable Windows-based laptops from other brands, all other things being equal in terms of RAM capacity.
Nevertheless, even with this optimization, the specs are quite high on their own. 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD hard drive, and that’s the minimum configuration. The screen in all modifications with a quality matrix IPS resolution 2560×1600. Apple’s proprietary graphics card 7-core or 8-core is responsible for the graphics.
The battery life of the MacBook Air is also definitely on the high side. Built-in battery capacity of 49.9W⋅h built-in battery provides up to 18 hours of battery life with minimal power consumption.

Disadvantages
Acer Spin 5 SP513-54N-73KV
Rating: 4.8
Another Transformer in our review, which also took a worthy place in the ranking of 2021 from TechRadar, and here we fully agree with the authoritative international publication. The model is really worth attention, and definitely worth the money.
Acer Spin 5 is one of the most functional and versatile tools for study, work, art and leisure. It gives you everything you need to unleash your creativity.
First of all the model is focused on those specialties where work with graphics is supposed to be done. Includes Acer Active Stylus pen with Wacom AES 1.0 with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. Thus the notebook becomes a full-fledged graphics tablet.
In the maximum configuration notebook is equipped with IPS matrix with a resolution of 2560×1440, in the minimum – F
- lHD 1920×1080, and there is also an intermediate option – 2256×1504. The screen is made for the highest grade – it is noticeable even subjectively, but accurate measurements show the “luminosity” to 500 lux, which allows you to work without problems in the open space on a sunny day.
Graphics is provided by Intel Iris Plus Graphics card. There are some gaming capabilities, but do not count on them too much – this laptop has another purpose. Processor in the maximum configuration – Intel Core i7 1065G7, but you can also choose a slightly less expensive option based on Intel Core i5 1035G4. No compromise on RAM – only 16GB LPDDR4X. Hard drive – 1TB high-speed SSD.
There’s no question about the interface set here, either. Two USB 3 ports.1 Type A allows you to connect any modern standard peripherals, two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 functionality extends the compatibility and flexibility of laptop integration almost limitless. With their help it is possible to connect external graphics cards, if you want, if you work with complex three-dimensional graphics.
From the user Yandex’s review.The Marketplace: “Brightness! The screen shines with more than 500 lux, which is enough to see in the shade on a bright sunny day. For a shifter tablet weighing 1,200 grams, this is the key. Acer is perhaps the only manufacturer to put a matrix on a mid-range notebook that’s the right fit for the job.

Dell XPS 15 7590
Rating: 4.9
The review of the best notebooks for study according to Expertology magazine will be completed by an absolutely stellar model – incredibly bright, powerful, functional Dell XPS 15, which earned rave reviews from the most prominent professional communities.He becameWinner of the European Hardware Community Awards 2020, and the Digital
It has been described as “the best all-around 15-inch notebook on the market today. Of course, it was one of TechRadar’s top ten study laptops. The notebook is positioned by the manufacturer as a gaming notebook, and for good reason. The main component is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 discrete graphics card. Its availability is optional, and if you do not need it, you can get by with graphics integrated into the processor. The processor itself can also be chosen within the selection of modifications – from Core i5 to Core i9. With RAM is the same – from 8 to 32GB.
Notebook screen size – 15.6 “. The most interesting thing about this model is the ability to have different matrices with a resolution of F
- lHD 1920×1080 in minimum configuration to 4K 3840×2160 in maximum. And that’s not all – there’s even a choice between IPS and OLED. Touch screen or regular – you can also choose the appropriate modification.
Thus, with the maximum configuration, the laptop becomes a powerful tool for those who study video editing and plan to achieve impressive results in 4K editing in the shortest possible time.
There is also a choice of battery supply. Since a 4K matrix, even an OLED will consume disproportionately more power than a F
- lHD, in such a case there is a typical configuration with a battery capacity of 97Wh. Such a powerful battery can provide up to 15 hours of battery life. Of course, it is possible to charge the laptop via USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C with Thunderbolt 3 functionality. Full charge time – up to 4 hours. Via USB 3 ports.1 Gen 1 you can recharge your gadgets.
Users in general have a strictly positive opinion about this laptop and even rarely complain about the price, which is certainly high. The remarks are mostly of a point nature, but there is also an identified system problem, though not critical. Preinstalled drivers and software often do not work quite correctly. Users easily solve the issue by simply reinstalling Windows – it does not deprive the license.
From Yandex review.Market with the status of “Level 2 Gadget Inspector”: “Tactile carbon is awesome, soft touch, I also love the tactile feel of the trackpad. The keyboard is nice and handy. 4K IPS display is very bright, I set it to zero or 10, maximum 20 percent in a well-lit room – there is a reserve for the street.”.
Advantages
Disadvantages
In terms of performance the buyer has a good choice of configurations. Minimal based on AMD Ryzen 3 4300U 4-core processor. 8GB or more RAM, and a 512GB SSD hard drive. Performance isn’t just measured by memory capacity, but also by memory speed, which is high — at 3200 MHz. But it is not possible to expand the memory, because it is soldered into the motherboard, and there are no additional slots.
The battery here is not as capacious as in the Lenovo Yoga S
- m 7 15, but it’s also worthy – 51Wh. Given the smaller screen and lower power consumption in general, on this battery the laptop can work up to 12 hours, depending on the mode. Can be charged via Type-C.
- lHD is already mauvais ton, and simply impractical. The matrix type is TN and it has very limited viewing angles, especially vertically. But for super budget laptops this is the norm, because IPS matrices are much more expensive.
The rather modest performance of the Intel Celeron N4020 processor is partly compensated by a high-speed 128 GB SSD drive, so that at least the loading of the operating system and programs is quick, in a matter of seconds. RAM only 4GB, but for office programs and comparable resource-intensive software will be quite enough.
The set of I/O ports includes the most necessary ones: USB 2.0 i 3.1, RJ-45 gigabit LAN card, HDMI, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. No card reader, but that’s only a minus for photographers. The 4810mA⋅h battery is able to handle up to 6 hours of work with documents at minimum screen brightness.
Users in numerous reviews are unanimous in the opinion that this is generally a good laptop option for studying if the budget is extremely limited and the laptop is needed right now. The only thing to keep in mind is that in such models, more often than not, the manufacturer has to save on almost everything, and that includes the materials of the case.
While the laptop is new, it does not feel, but after a year of use, the cheapness of plastic manifests itself – erased keys, loose moving parts, unscrewing screws and similar phenomena. Unfortunately, this is an unavoidable side effect for such a minimal price. As for the electronics, there are no problems with durability, and this is the main thing.
Advantages
Disadvantages
ASUS VivoBook A543MA
Rating: 4.6

Next let’s consider a slightly more expensive laptop, but already with clear advantages over the previous one. The Taiwanese corporation AsusTek Computer Inc. does not need any special introductions. The line of VivoBook laptops has been coming out for many years, and it is a kind of in-house budget brand for a wide range of consumers.
The series A543MA includes many modifications, but we will take DM1197T model for example. It’s based on the still inexpensive, but already quad-core Intel Pentium Silver N5030 processor. RAM is 4GB, the hard drive is a mechanical HDD 500GB. There are modifications with solid-state high-speed SSD, but of much smaller capacity.
But it’s not the processor that makes this notebook so much better. It has an IPS matrix, and this noticeably distinguishes the model in the category of budget. Resolution – F
- lHD 1920×1080. The diagonal is the same as in the previous laptop – 15.6″.
The interfaces configuration here is exactly the same as in the previous model with the only difference that there is a card reader. The energy capacity of 3-cell battery – 33Wh. This provides up to 5 hours of moderate workload – office programs, occasional surfing the internet.
Like most laptops with a screen diagonal of about 15 inches, this model has a full-size keyboard with a number pad on the right. Smaller laptops come with a “truncated” keyboard, and for some users this may be a problem. For example, for students of those specialties where you have to count a lot, enter large arrays of numerical data. So in this case we single out the digital unit as an advantage.
Users of this series of laptops VivoBook lineup agree that this is one of the best options for study at a low price. Here the economy on materials is much less pronounced, and the body is noticeably more durable than in the above model. IPS screen with wide viewing angles has a higher brightness margin, so you can more or less comfortably study in daylight outside.
From the review of Yandex.Market with a few months’ experience: “Runs fast, nice IPS screen, nice to watch movies. Long battery life. Pulls Macintraft and other simple games. For studying/working/surfing on the web is perfect!”

HP 15-db1021ur/s
Rating: 4.6

Now let’s have a look at a budget variant from the legendary American corporation Hewlett-Packard. Here we also have a 15-inch screen, but the accents are placed a little differently in terms of priority importance.
Unlike the previous model there is a TN matrix with all the attendant problems of low brightness and, most difficult – small viewing angles. But this compromise allows us to get performance advantages while keeping the price affordable. In case of extreme need in IPS matrix it will be enough just to pick up the appropriate modification – it is not a problem, it is just more expensive.
Now, what are the electronics for which you have to put up with a TN matrix. Here is an AMD Ryzen 3 3200U processor. The processor is not top-of-the-line either, but it’s still Ryzen on two cores Zen+ with up to 3.5GHz in Turbo mode. 8GB RAM. Hard Disk – 256GB solid state fast SSD. As we can see, this configuration is “a head above” both previous models.
Users appreciate this series and this particular modification in particular for the combination of price and performance. It’s not without its drawbacks, but the price makes up for it. And users stress that the cheapness is not conspicuous.
Complementing the impression of a very good battery life combined with energy efficiency and quality cooling. In our stress-tests we failed to heat up the key electronics above 70°, at the same time, during half an hour of 100% CPU and GPU loading just under 20% of the battery charge was used up. In general, you can quite expect 4-5 hours of continuous work with brightness above average.

HP 14s-fq0034ur
Rating: 4.7

We finish the selection of the best budget laptops for study with another model manufactured by Hewlett-Packard, in which we see the most balanced characteristics with minimal compromises.
By balanced performance we mean that there are no obvious “overshoots” of important features. For example, in the previous two laptops, the manufacturer made some compromises in order to keep the price affordable – at the expense of the screen characteristics or performance.
There are no such compromises here, and for a reasonable price difference you get both a good screen with IPS matrix and high performance. The resolution of the matrix is still the same – F
- lHD 1920×1080. Regarding the speed let’s take a closer look at this model.
Notebook configuration is based on the AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor. The whole Ryzen series has made a splash in its time on the market. These processors are not just worthy competitors to their Intel equivalents, but in almost every way they are a serious head start for the “Blue” companies, making them nervous and taking reciprocal steps. The closest equivalent processor from Intel is the Core i5-8265U, but it noticeably loses out to the Ryzen 5 3500U in important ways. The same clock speed of the Ryzen 5 is a third higher at 2.1GHz vs.6GHz, and that’s not all the advantages. In synthetic tests, Ryzen 5 on 16.4% faster, the processor is 12nm vs Intel’s 14nm, more powerful video core, and the processor is banal newer and cheaper.
Users for the most part think highly of this model for its price/performance ratio, its balance, elegant look and quality of workmanship. The notebook feels definitely “more expensive” than its price at least thanks to the high-quality material of the case, the two-stage keyboard backlight, the presence of the USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C.
True, this hides a small disappointment – Type-C only supports data transfer, but not charging. However, we must admit that charging support would greatly add to the price of the laptop, and then it definitely would not fit into the category of inexpensive.

The best laptops for studies in the mid-range price category
Let’s move on to a selection of models that were subjected to expert selection without a strict focus on the minimum cost. As a conditional cost limit, we took an upper limit of $1,000, or $80k. rubles. The more expensive variants in this review, we consider as the premium class and allocate a separate nomination for them.
Xiaomi RedmiBook 14 Ryzen Edition
Rating: 4.6

Let’s start the selection with one of the most notable phenomena in the notebook market in 2020 – 14-inch RedmiBook from Xiaomi on Ryzen processor. In this line later came out with a larger diagonal of 16 inches, in general more perfect, but for the format of universal notebook for study more suited all the same 14 inches.
This model, of course, is not devoid of flaws, and we will mention them, but on a number of parameters laptop literally “asks” to the premium class. In fact, many people see clear parallels with the Apple MacBook Air. It is a metal chassis, overall styling, emphasis on performance, reliability and ergonomics.
Powerful electronics – AMD Ryzen 4000 Series processor, dual channel RAM of 16GB, high-speed SSD hard drive of 512GB – are decisive in terms of performance.
