*Obzor of the best in the opinion of the editorial board. About the selection criteria. This material is subjective, not an advertisement and is not a buying guide. Specialist consultation required before purchase.
Boat motors are a specialized type of internal combustion engine mated to a “foot” and propeller to give motion to boats and other types of small craft. Historically, like all engines, are subject to classification according to the number of combustion strokes, being subdivided into two-stroke and four-stroke. From the technical point of view, the latter look more perfect, as they allow high speed due to higher power and torque, as well as moving on the water knowingly more oversized boats. And with questions of reliability here all is not so unequivocal, about what we in detail will tell in recommendations on a choice and in point of comparison.
As for the subject matter of the article, it lies entirely in the abundance of model units of motors in the relevant market segment, as well as companies that produce them. Because of such high competition (more than a thousand units are competing for leadership in different areas) it is sometimes very difficult to discern a really worthwhile and suitable product. Therefore, Expertology magazine, having conducted its own market research, selected 30 of the most promising boat motors, divided into eight thematic categories. The evaluation criteria were the conclusions of a group of experts, as well as feedback from users who had tested the models in different climatic and operational conditions.
How to choose a boat motor
The procedure of boat motor selection involves a number of fundamental and specific nuances which should be taken into account without fail. Our magazine’s motorboat specialists have identified as many as 7 such items:
Engine type.According to this aspect, all engines for boats are divided into gasoline and electric.
Gasolineare standard internal combustion engines that convert the energy of fuel combustion into rotary motion of the propeller and subsequent forward motion of the boat. They are subdivided into two-stroke and four-stroke, which was mentioned in the introduction.
Two-stroke – technically simpler units, fuel injection, compression, detonation, combustion and venting of exhaust gases in which take place in two strokes. Losses in almost all components of operation compared to 4-stroke counterparts, but in cost and ergonomics they are far ahead of the latter. Considered more rugged in terms of design simplicity, but operating in an environment of constant high vibration and low environmental impact, which also affects reliability in the long run, moreover with a “minus” sign;
four-stroke – the last round of development of internal combustion engines, the working cycle of which consists of four strokes (injection, compression, detonation (combustion), exhaust – one work stroke corresponds to each action). They are more complex constructional unit, which negatively affects the reliability parameters. However due to decrease of vibration load, increase of ecological compatibility of operation and quality of fuel combustion there is a compensation of durability indicators (one of the components of reliability). they are economical, but cost much more than two-stroke versions, have some inconveniences in terms of transportation, and in general look much more oversized.
Electric motorsHave become the prerogative choice for domestic consumers relatively recently, but have managed to firmly and successfully establish themselves on the market in Europe and North America. Their main advantages are practically complete absence of noise due to the absence of such a large number of rubbing knots in the construction (as in gasoline engines) as well as high environmental friendliness due to the use of electrical energy. Many experts refer to the number of advantages and cost indicators, but in reality the purchase of such a motor is almost more expensive than a simple gasoline counterpart. The thing is that, in addition to the working unit itself, you need to buy the battery and charger, which, moreover, negatively affects the overall weight of the equipment.
Power.The choice of the motor on this indicator should be based on the overall dimensions of the boat and the maximum number of people who will be in it. So, if you plan to make single races without piling load (in the form of tackle, spinning rods and other fishing equipment) the unit with 5 horsepower is ideal. It will also be good for short transits from one “patch” of water to another with a couple of people and a small amount of equipment.
If the boat is supposed to carry 2-3 people and a small amount of cargo, the optimum power of the purchased motor would be equal to 10 horsepower.
For mass paddling in large boats and metal boats (accommodating up to 6-8 people) the necessary “minimum” will be a very strong, by the standards of the segment, the engine at 20-25 horses.
Dimensions.Always compare the size of the boat motor with the boat dimensions. In case of improper selection of one to the other, there is a risk of giving a large angle to the back of the boat, which will have a questionable comfort on board. For the small boat sufficient condition of moving on water is a compact engine (two-stroke or four-stroke – you decide) with a fuel tank of 1-2 liters. Always look at the purchase in moderation – will its capabilities be enough to provide the proper level of work.
Propeller immersion depth.The length of the deadwood mechanism (in common parlance – the length of the knee from the engine to the propeller) – a very important aspect of the boat motor. Not only the speed of service life, but also the rationality of usable power depends on the right choice. The choice should be based on the height of the vessel and its immersion depth. So, if you choose a motor with a short deadwood, the propeller may not sink all the way into the water, thus losing a significant amount of power at idle, including overcoming the resistance of the transition from air to water. The opposite is not good: with a long crank the propeller will sink deeper and work with slightly higher drag values, thus significantly reducing the power output. Be sure to pay more attention to this factor.
Type of control system.Boat motor control systems are subdivided into remote (remote) and direct. The first is typical for long boats and launches: in them the rudder part is installed in the middle of the board. Control is achieved by a set of crossovers which react smoothly, but with little delay, to the pilot’s input and output.
Direct management of the motor is carried out thanks to the tiller – the crank handle, which is a mandatory part of the design of the unit. It is worth saying that the tiller system has a higher reliability, as it does not have such a large heap of links and transfer mechanisms. it is considered as a basic system for small and medium-sized boats, where the distance to the control body is not so great.
Producers.An indirect parameter that can nevertheless largely predetermine a boat motor’s propensity for long-term operation. The specificity of this point is the orientation of advice for two large consumer groups.
We strongly recommend for the beginners to give preference to engines of the leaders of the segment – the producers widely known in the world market: Mercury, Yamaha, HDX, Tohatsu, Honda and others. Firstly, these companies have established themselves as suppliers of reliable products, capable of serving without failures and all sorts of nagaromas not one season. Secondly, you can find a lot of manuals and other materials on their maintenance and repair on the Internet, as well as dozens of dealerships.
For experienced users, the limitations are much less: although the market leaders are the predominant link in the sales chain, you can also pay attention to emerging companies. In particular, Russian and Chinese, which managed to bring their production to an acceptable level. Of course, in this sense it is more about the possibility to repair the motor itself in case of failure, without reference to the materials (of which there are not many for less popular models) and manuals. But with a love of periodic digging in details the bargain looks very profitable – the amount spent on the acquisition of a no-name does not go in any comparison with the price of well-known engines.
The right cheapening method.For those who still want to buy a unit of a well-known manufacturer, but are limited in money, there is an alternative way to the aftermarket. In general, much of what is presented there is trash, but even among them there are quite curious specimens.
When buying a motor on the secondary marketit is very important to check its condition and performance, if such an opportunity is given. Either take the time to “run-in” the motor. Usually the test period is 3-7 days, but even on such terms sellers go quite rarely.
So if you have a choice between a used or a new boat motor and you do not have enough money for a second one, it makes sense to postpone the purchase and collect enough money for a new one. However, if time is not patient, then buy on the secondary market only quality models from reputable manufacturers who have received hundreds and thousands of compliments from users and experts.
Which is better 2 or 4 stroke motor?
As mentioned in the introduction, gasoline boat motors are divided into two-stroke and four-stroke. Despite the fundamental proximity in the functions performed and layout solutions, still these units have a lot of differences, as well as the accompanying pros and cons. But who is better? The answer to this question we can find in the comparison table:
Boat motor type | Advantages | Disadvantages |
2-stroke | + Ease of construction, which guarantees a high degree of reliability + Lower purchase price + Small dimensions and weight + Convenience of transport | – Higher, in comparison with the four-stroke, fuel consumption – Noisy, especially at high rpm – Vibrationally unstable at low speeds – Smoking exhaust, in connection with which there are problems with the environmental friendliness of use – The design is obviously more outdated, which has a negative effect on durability |
4-stroke | + Improved operating principle leading to less wear and tear and also better durability + Low vibration at low speed + Much lower emissions, lower smokiness + Makes less noise when running at high rpm + Somewhat more economical than the two-stroke versions | – Complicated design, more likely to break down than the two-stroke system – High price – Increased size and weight, problems with transportation methods |

The best two-stroke motors with 5 liters capacity. s.
Tohatsu M5BDS
Rating: 4.9

The Tohatsu single-cylinder outboard is an economical two-stroke motor for open water cruising enthusiasts. Despite the compactness of the engine part, its power is 5 horsepower, and the built-in fuel tank holds up to 2 liters of gasoline. It is also possible to connect an external 12.5-liter tank, which has enough fuel (at a normal consumption of 1.8 liters per hour) for more than 6 hours of continuous work.
Tohatsu M5BDS has a three-speed gearbox with forward, reverse and neutral modes. Integrated and quite reasonable system of protection against starting in gear, ensuring the safety of the user and people in the range of the propeller. But the positive features do not end there. Japanese manufacturers have not forgotten about the equipment and a lifeline, through the use of which you can make an emergency stop motor. In general, the model does not offer any unique technical solutions, giving consumers the opportunity to solve the issues of repair and maintenance by themselves. Absolute first place.
Advantages
- Compact mechanical system equipped with a 12.5-liter external fuel tank;
- The use of simplified technical solutions to enable users to maintain the motor;
- Two built-in protection systems (emergency propeller shutdown, starting in gear);
- high reliability;
- low price.
Disadvantages
- not found.
HDX T 5 BMS
rating: 4.8

HDX T 5 – very close analogue of the 5-horsepower motor from Toyama down to the design nuances and performance. Came into the ranking due to excellent reliability indicators when used in the long term, as well as low (even by the standards of two-strokes) market price. All its pluses are the mirror-image reality of its Japanese analogue, to which we can refer stability of work on high revolutions (the engine does not choke up from abundance of power), and acceptable noise level, and small vibrations at a stroke.
However, the design of the HDX T 5 has a couple of design nuances, pointed out by users and experts. Firstly, there is no mechanism for emergency shutdown of the boat motor, due to which an accidental swim in shallow water can not only deprive the propeller of the blades, but also break the gearbox, providing shock load and scratching out the teeth. Secondly, it’s a bit illogical to fit the motor with a 1.5 liter fuel tank, since at full throttle in open water it’s hardly enough for a round trip… so you’d better have a reserve canister… or a regular paddle.
Advantages
- optimal combination of price and quality;
- Noise and vibration level is within the norm;
- is stable on acceleration;
- small fuel tank has a positive effect on weight specifications;
- Moderately reliable for a Chinese two-strokes.
Disadvantages
- small volume of the fuel tank and, consequently, a small range;
- Lack of emergency shutoff function of the propeller.
Mercury 5M
Rating: 4.7

The representative of the strong in technical terms of the company Mercury, which is one of the modifications of the motors of the portable 5-series. In fact, the only difference from the original here is the equipment with a remote fuel tank for 12 liters, and the ability to install a 50-watt alternator with a current of 4 amps. As for the rest, the constructional differences are minimal: the same 3.86 horsepower, three gears and operation at speeds from 4 to 5 thousand rpm.
According to consumers, Mercury 5M is a real “plowman”, honestly and consistently enough working out the due resource. Recommended height of the transom under it is 381 millimeters, which imposes small restrictions on the use. And the weight of 20 kilograms does not seem something out of the ordinary, completely corresponding to the notion “portable”. Not the most expensive on the market, this motor is the first choice for a wide range of customers, especially in light of the emergency shutdown unit and a huge database of thoughtful details, down to the streamlined contours of the hull and all sorts of tweaks for comfortable operation.
Advantages
- optimal ratio of price and quality;
- rational approach to exhaust gas extraction (loop-purge);
- compact overall dimensions, 20 kilograms in weight;
- the possibility of completing an external fuel tank for 12 liters (own tank volume – 2.5 liters).
Disadvantages
- with the lapse of time there is a strong need in maintenance of separate units – gearbox and piston mechanism
- increased fuel consumption owing to special setting of the second stroke – the moment of fuel injection/gas venting.
NISSAN MARINE NS 5 B D1
Rating: 4.6

A major Japanese automaker is also a supplier of engines for two and four-stroke boats. Supplier, because the oldest brand in the segment has developed a few concepts by itself, buying the bulk of motors from Honda and Tohatsu. It so happened that NISSAN MARINE NS 5 B D1 is almost full analogue (except for cosmetic nuances) of Tohatsu two-stroke, which volume is traditionally for this segment is 102 cubic centimeters.
From other features boat motor can mention the presence of built-in 2.5-liter fuel tank with the possibility of increasing by connecting an optional external tank for another 12 liters. Consumers also talk about easy setup and self-service: the design is so simple that you can fix the causes of malfunction or poor performance even in the garage. All this is certainly good, but let us not forget the fact that costs NISSAN MARINE NS 5 B D1 twice as much as analogues, and therefore distributed in the retail sale is much less than others.
Advantages
- the motor can be used in sea water (salt does not affect the performance of the unit);
- built-in and external tank available (2.5 + 12 liters);
- Simple design, allowing users to service the motor themselves;
- good reliability indicators.
Disadvantages
- high price, due to the popularity of the brand;
- low availability in retail.
Toyama T5BMS
Rating: 4.5

The rating is opened by quite old representative of the market of two-strokes, who has managed to lose the position of the most popular in the segment of small-powered two-strokes motors. Toyama T5BMS is gradually passing into the category of relics of the past, clinging to the remnants of its former popularity by high prevalence in Russian retail stores. Conceptually, it is the same compact unit as the Mercury 5M, weighing 20 kilograms and the engine with a volume of 102 cubic centimeters (producing 5 horsepower). Three-stage gearbox, classic for two-strokes, with forward and reverse modes, as well as neutral mode. Fastened to the transom with a screw clamp, and its recommended height is 380 millimeters.
Despite such ordinary, from the point of view of the considered competitors, parameters Toyama T5BMS is extremely wasteful and noisy boat motor, personal fuel reserve in which (2.7 liters) is barely enough for a long trip. As noted by experts, do not have any illusions about its origin – the time when Toyama concentrated production in Japan is long gone, and now the production of units for boats engaged in … of course, China. To tell the truth, we cannot have any complaints about the quality of assembly – the Japanese have still managed to provide a tough level of control.
Advantages of
- High quality of assembling even in spite of the production base in China;
- Good working life of the nodes and parts;
- compact dimensions, only 20 kilograms in weight;
- easy to find in Russian retail stores.
Disadvantages
- 2.7 liters is barely enough for an hour of travel at top speed;
- Is quite expensive for an obsolete model;
- high noise level.
Best four-stroke motors with 5 liter capacity. s.
Yamaha F5AMHS
Rating: 4.9

economical boat motor with huge load potential, the working volume of which is 139 cubic centimeters. By optimizing the process of fuel supply into the combustion chamber, Yamaha was able to reduce consumption to 1.7 liters per hour, which had a positive impact on the cost of its maintenance. In general, F5AMHS can be called a perfect purchase, except, perhaps, for the price of 80 thousand rubles, which looks simply robbery against the background of 5 horsepower output at maximum. Of the nice little things that come as options (for which you also have to pay) include a generator, a tool kit for self-service, the indicator of oil pressure in the system (manometer), as well as starter protection. Ultimately, this purchase is suitable for those who treat fishing a little differently than a simple hobby, receiving a profit in the form of devices, cash prizes or rewards.
Advantages
- Optional attachments, allowing you to create a complete unit from the motor for long fishing sessions;
- Optimal fuel consumption (1.7 liters per hour at maximum speed);
- High degree of quality and structural reliability;
- low level of noise and spreading vibrations.
Disadvantages
- high price.
Honda BF5DH SHU
Rating: 4.8

The high price for this boat motor is due to the loud name of the manufacturer, but, unlike NISSAN, its development is entirely under the authority of Honda. 5 horsepower from the 127cc engine is a great result, especially considering the low fuel consumption per hour at top speed (only 1.5 liters per hour). Actually, the built-in tank is designed for such amount of gasoline, but users have the opportunity to expand it by setting the external tank to the standard 12 liters, at which the trip can last from 8 to 16 hours.
An important advantage of the Honda BF5DH SHU over its competitors is the presence of a 6 amp alternator, which offsets the high price tag. Electric starting, water cooling only (not hybrid, complete with thermostat), but with oil pressure gauge. In general, the complete set, and even in such a high quality of assembling. In some points this model looks even better than its direct competitor Yamaha, but because of its higher price and less popularity on the Russian market, we give it a respectable second place.
Advantages
- Availability of installed attachments, usually supplied as an option, for an additional fee (alternator, oil pressure indicator, electric ignition, etc.).);
- perfect build quality and high reliability of components;
- Low fuel consumption (1.5 liters per hour);
- great fit between the parts, therefore there is almost no noise and vibration.
Disadvantages
- Very high price for a boat motor.
HDX F 5 BMS
Rating: 4.7

Chinese manufacturer Hondex for several years continues to actively promote in the domestic market, entrenched in the minds of consumers as a supplier of the cheapest product with acceptable quality. The HDX F 5 BMS four-stroke boat motor is no exception. It costs only 10,000 roubles less than its two-stroke counterpart (T 5 BMS). From the design point of view, the decision to cram a large-sized motor into an old plastic casing does not look reasonable, the reason for which was an even more global reduction in the volume of the fuel tank to 1.3 liters. However, against the background of not the most voluminous combustion chamber (112 cubic centimeters), as well as a surprisingly good adjustment of the moment of fuel supply, on this somehow it is still possible to exist.
But perhaps the most impressive feature of the F 5 BMS is the high torque at low engine speeds, which allows you to accelerate even a heavily loaded vessel to 18…22 kilometers per hour, albeit for a long time. According to the device, it also does not present any serious surprises, allowing consumers to carry out their own repairs as needed. In general, it is a worthy representative of its category, which looks the most interesting in terms of cost relative to surrounding competitors.
Advantages
- low, in comparison with competitors, price;
- Economy and structural simplicity (easy to service yourself);
- Ability to develop high torque at low rpm.
Flaws
- ill-conceived “squeezed” design with a small gas tank on board (1.3 liter).
Mercury F5M
Rating: 4.6

Another representative of the American company Mercury enters the ranking with the annoying capacity of the built-in fuel tank, which is only 1 liter. It is a pity, but it is clear why the producers decided to do it – optional acquisition of 12-liter external reservoir looks much more attractive in prospect than slow driving on reservoir with paddle at the ready.
However, this does not cancel the fact of high quality of the model production, as well as possession of an acceptable performance indicators. 5 horse powers are generated in the 123 cubic centimeter cylinder, giving a good start in terms of torque and the ability to accelerate quickly under high load. Water cooling, and the exhaust goes directly into the atmosphere, resulting in slightly higher noise compared to competitors in the ranking. It is not necessary to dismiss also a high cost of American development, at which the competition even with the Chinese representatives is lost at once. But, even despite a bunch of purely comparative shortcomings, we’ll say – Mercury F5M is worth buying, and the reason for this is the high reliability, accompanied by a high operating life of the components.
Advantages
- good build quality;
- High service life of nodes and parts of the engine;
- Optimal torque characteristics;
- The ability to maneuver in shallow water.
Disadvantages
- high cost against the background of shortcomings;
- small fuel tank capacity;
- noisier than competitors.
Best 2-stroke boat motors under 9.9 l. s.
Mikatsu M9.9FHS
Rating: 4.9

Advantages
- triple factory test of each model;
- easy maintenance;
- economical fuel consumption;
- affordable for its high quality.
Disadvantages
- difficult to install the motor alone.
Mercury ME 9.9 M
Rating: 4.9

Quite unexpectedly, one of the leading positions in the ranking took the product of the American company Mercury, which showed outstanding results in terms of power, torque and build quality. On the outside of the ME 9 boat motor.9 M looks perfect, underlining the first impression of a good performance on the water. Producing the claimed 9.9 horsepower, the unit engages 262 cubic inches of displacement of two cylinders, limited to 6,000 shaft revolutions per minute.
A small design flaw looks equipped with an external tank of 12 liters, which is hardly enough for a good fishing trip without distractions for refueling. The cooling system contains a thermostat and provides additional heat dissipation by circulating water through the system. Users say it can be used for salt-water boating, but we don’t recommend it unless you absolutely have to. But to equip the Mercury ME 9.9 M is capable of sailing short or long boats with a tiller arm or remote control. In terms of price this unit is more profitable than the less powerful Nissan Marine, but in terms of performance is able to surpass all the competitors in the category.
Advantages
- A very good set of performance characteristics;
- availability of thermostatic and water cooling in the system;
- possibility of tiller and remote control;
- excellent build quality;
- high but adequate price.
Disadvantages
- unreasonably small fuel tank (only 12 liters).
Tohatsu M9.8BS
Rating: 4.8

The same original Tohatsu boat motor that was purchased and slightly converted to a Nissan Marine product. Its legendary status is due to a combination of quality, durability, and an abundance of optional extras that have appealed to thousands of domestic users. weighing 26 kg, it produces 9.8 hp with a total displacement of 169 cm3 in two cylinders.
As a fuel tank in Tohatsu M9.8BS uses an external 12-liter fuel tank with a capacity of 6-8 hours of cruising at maximum speed. It has the ability to move in shallow water and grassy places, which is equally good for both anglers and hunters. Finally, as additional accessories to the model you can buy generator and tachometer, allowing you to monitor the engine speed to avoid overheating and prolonged exposure to loads.
Advantages
- excellent price-performance ratio;
- availability of additional options for purchase;
- 12-liter fuel tank, allowing, at low fuel consumption, to sail for dozens of hours;
- Good workmanship without squeaks and unnecessary noise;
- very popular with consumers – the people’s choice.
Disadvantages
- not found.
HDX T 9.9 BMS
Rating: 4.7

Two-stroke boat motor Hondex T 9.9 BMS – a real gift for fans of fast and long drives on open water, without wading in the grassy and shallow areas. No kidding, but 9.9 horsepower is generated here through the engine, the working volume of which is 246 cubic centimeters. At first glance, very wasteful, but since it is applicable to boats with a short transom (381 mm), there is plenty of torque. Hence the decent acceleration, and the ability to carry large kerb weight, gradually accelerating to decent speeds.
It’s also noteworthy that the HDX T 9.9 BMS is the first model so far in this review that comes with a 24-liter external gas tank, allowing for long trips without looking back at the shore. As noted by users, the operating power of the model is more than the declared producers, and by 50%. In view of such an increase in performance small imperfections of the assembly seem to be a mere trifle. And with a glance at the price of the next representative of Chinese production and it can be called one of the best in the segment.
Advantages
- real power is higher than the declared power;
- The engine can be equipped with a 24-liter external fuel tank;
- excellent acceleration dynamics;
- high quality parts and, consequently, longer service life.
Disadvantages
- bulky model (36 kilograms of weight);
- assembly can not boast of silent operation.
Nissan Marine NS 9.8 BS
Rating: 4.6

Boat motor for short transom, with a working volume of 169 cubic centimeters. For a carbureted two-stroke engine weighing 26 kilograms this figure is very, very decent, especially in light of the ability to accelerate up to 30 kilometers per hour (and this is not the limit). NS Marine NM 9.8 BS is very popular in consumer circles, and the reason for this is the skillful disguise of iconic things under a completely new brand. The fact is that this model is nothing else than the Tohatsu motor of the same name, the similarity with which can be traced even in the smallest details.
When it comes to the performance potential of the NS Marine NM 9.8 BS, it is capable of pulling on a glider two people with equipment, or three, but without, gradually gaining speed to the above-said 30 kilometers per hour. Unfortunately, in terms of cost boat motor is inferior to direct competitors: consumers are much easier to buy the original Tohatsu, having paid for it in 1.5 (approximately) times less.
Advantages
- Engine displacement (169 cubic centimeters);
- high build quality;
- 26 kilograms of its own weight;
- develops high torque at low rpm.
Disadvantages
- Nothing short of a Tohatsu M9 counterpart.8BS;
- high cost.
Best 4-stroke boat motors up to 15 liters. s.
Honda BF15DK2SHU
Rating: 4.9

According to many users Honda BF15DK2SHU is the most economical representative of the four-stroke motors, a liter of fuel is enough to overcome 7.3 kilometers at maximum speed. Sounds mythical, but the reason for all this is good fuel timing and portion setting, which Honda certainly understands a lot about. In this regard, and the tank of 12.5 liters is enough for a long and productive fishing.
The two cylinders of the four-stroke motor have a combined displacement of 350 cubic centimeters, like some good little motorcycle for everyday use. Does this add to the model’s solidity? Definitely, as well as the torque to be able to carry a very large kerb weight (with people and equipment). Other advantages of the Honda BF15DK2SHU include the presence of overheat and oil pressure indicators, a built-in 6-amp alternator and emergency shutdown unit, and a rev limiter (with tachometer). In the end, the consumer is separated from the purchase only one serious fact – the price, which increased by almost 50% over the past four years. However, this does not invalidate the fact of the class of the model, especially in comparison with competitors.
Advantages
- the excellent build quality;
- The most economical among competitors (1 liter of fuel per 7.3 kilometers);
- An abundance of optional gauges, a built-in alternator, tachometer and rev limiter;
- High degree of structural reliability;
- Capable of navigating in shallow water.
Disadvantages
- very high price.
Yamaha F15 CEHS
Rating: 4.8

In fact, Honda’s main competitor for the 15-hp four-stroke, still (like a few years ago) experiencing problems with strong price differentiation from one distributor to another. The engine capacity of F15 CEHS is 362 cubic centimeters, resulting in a slight loss of the model to the same Honda BF15DK2SHU in terms of efficiency. Hence the big weight (53,7 kg), and the loss on fuel consumption (5,4 liters per hour), which is hardly noticeable on a background of the model equipped with a 25-liter external tank.
Despite the overall dimensions of the boat motor Yamaha F15 CEHS is perfect for fishermen and hunters, as it can wade through shallow water and, in case of emergency, use the emergency shutoff unit. The most often cited advantages are durability and the ability to work for several years without a single failure (with the proper level of service). Unfortunately, F15 CEHS has become a hostage of price manipulation, prevailing in dealerships and market conditions in Russia. Sometimes the situation reaches the point of absurdity, and the price variation within the region can reach 40-50%. With the already substantial increase in price, the additional markup more and more often scares away the buyer, negatively affecting the prestige of the company.
Advantages
- A very high level of reliability;
- optimal performance;
- 25-liter fuel tank included;
- Opportunity to pass shallow water, as well as to regulate the tilt of the motor and tiller;
- Power-start and emergency engine shutdown system.
Disadvantages
- Very wide price range on the Russian market – the markup can reach 40-50%.
Mercury ME F 15 MH
Rating: 4.7

ME F 15 MH is a product of high quality and medium price (in comparison with presented opponents), which can satisfy the needs of hunters and fishermen. 352 cubic inch motor produces 15 horsepower, providing maximum fuel economy from the built-in 12-liter fuel tank. Available – a number of indicators, allowing you to monitor not only the number of revolutions of the shaft, but also to monitor the temperature of the engine, as well as the state of oil pressure in the system. includes important safety features like an emergency shutoff and the ability to travel in shallow water without the risk of breaking the three-bladed propeller or getting tangled in the grass.
Rejecting a technical component, we expose quite a controversial parameter, negatively influencing the ergonomics. We are talking, of course, about the great mass of the Mercury ME F 15 MH. If in case of HDX F 15 FWS this fact is caused by integration of very capacious fuel tank, here the phenomenon of such heavy construction (52 kg) is not clear and looks very disputable. As a whole, it is impossible to reproach the model in something else, but it is possible to note, for example, presence of the 12-amp alternator, and with obvious recording in an asset. The price, according to the whole category representation, bites, but it is perfectly balanced with quality parameters.
Advantages
- optimal price-performance ratio;
- availability of an alternator for 12 amps;
- Abundance of sensors (tachometer, oil pressure, overheating);
- the presence of a forced shutdown function and the ability to swim in shallow water;
- high structural reliability
Disadvantages
- cumbersome and heavy construction (52 kilograms).
HDX F 15 FWS
Rating: 4.6

Even in the line of 15 hp engines Chinese company Hondex continues to act as a niche manufacturer of a budget product struggling for the consumer with quality and acceptable price level. HDX F 15 FWS is a model of this order, the price of which is comparable to the premium representatives of two-stroke motors with the same power.
In fact, if we do not take into account the quality indicators (which the Japanese units are certainly higher than those of this Chinese wonder), then the model has all chances to be considered a true category leader. The reason for this is simple: the 323cc motor produces the same 15 horses as the competition, showing itself much more efficient in terms of efficiency. And even the weight of 51 kilograms can be explained logically – the HDX F 15 FWS has a 24-liter fuel tank, which can be increased by 12 liters if the user wants. It is possible to move in shallow water, two methods of starting the engine (manual and electric), as well as an emergency system for engine shutdown. If it were not for a number of small faults of a constructive part, this assembly would be acknowledged as a standard one.
Advantages
- Availability of manual and electric start;
- high performance;
- The total volume of the fuel tanks can reach up to 36 liters;
- ability to move in shallow water;
- attractive, in comparison with competitors, price.
Disadvantages
- extraneous noises are present at absolutely normal motor operation.
Best boat motors from 15 to 40 liters. s.
Yamaha F40 FET
Rating: 4.9

Yamaha’s all-around great-looking series of powerful engines, three-cylinder displacement (!) motor of which is 747 cubic centimeters. Is in demand mainly among professional fishermen, as the cost of nearly 400 thousand rubles, and traction characteristics are grounded for comfortable catching from a large vessel and the ability to move quickly on the open water. However, for fans of hunting in reeds and shallow water Yamaha F40 FET also provides all the conveniences: electric motor lift, its tilt adjustment is provided, and the manufacturers themselves noted the ability to move in low water.
94 kilograms of weight of the model – quite a serious problem both for transportation and mounting on the transom. It is clear that part of the weight is taken up by the engine and the other part is taken up by the deadwood with a three-bladed propeller. For the sake of at least some reduction of their own dimensions and weight, Honda engineers went for the trick, taking the fuel tank of 25 liters out of the system. However, at the consumption of more than 10 liters per hour it is not enough – and here the consumer is faced with a very serious choice: to be “tied” to the shore or to buy another reservoir. In view of already high cost of the unit additional expenses look frankly bad, however for a possibility to fish comfortably some people are ready to give and much more.
Advantages
- plenty of additional trim (sensors, 17-amp alternator, protection and engine shutdown systems);
- 40 horsepower from a three-cylinder four-stroke motor;
- Ability to swim across shallow water;
- High quality of workmanship and long service life.
Disadvantages
- extremely high price.
Honda BF30DK2 SRTU (BF30D4 SRTU)
Rating: 4.8

Another top unit from the Japanese company Honda, which provides low-noise operation and a smooth ride on the open water. Provides excellent traction for boats with total kerb weight of 700 kg, which is equivalent to 5-6 people with rigging and equipment. Great working potential of BF30DK2 SRTU makes it necessary to have a group of carburetors and gas pedal pump that pressurizes the fuel system. As for consumption, it burns no more than 9 liters per hour of work at maximum engine speed, that is on the average by 18 % lower than in direct competitors from Yamaha and Tohatsu.
Regarding the integration of auxiliary systems, the Honda BF30DK2 SRTU differs only positively. For example, the presence of an electronic ignition system, water cooling, electric motor elevator, and reverse and emergency shutoff function can be attributed to the asset. Generally speaking, from the whole range of features of the Japanese unit the users dislike only the expense – the stock of the fuel tank hardly suffices for 1,5 hours of work. the question of cost in this case recedes into the background, but its acquisition is mostly addressed to professional fishermen.
Advantages
- A very high quality motor with a high level of build;
- Reduced fuel consumption due to improved gasoline/air mixture principles
- abundance of additional sensors and elements;
- high loading potential;
- the choice of professionals.
Disadvantages
- Small volume of the fuel tank (12 liters).
Mercury 40M
Rating: 4.7

Extremely powerful motor for large boats, producing up to 40 horsepower through two cylinders with a total volume of 644 cubic centimeters. More efficient than the Yamaha, but at full throttle it quickly reaches the state of wear and tear in some areas.
Another essentially positive difference from the main competitor is a price indicator: it is half as much, which attracts customers from among ordinary fishing fans – more experienced than professional, participating in sports championships. As an optional extra, the Mercury 40M has a 10-amp alternator along with sensors for overheating, temperature and oil pressure. The total weight of the construction is 75 kg not considering the removed tank of 24 liters. In general, the fuel consumption per hour of swimming barely reaches 10 liters, so one full tank is enough for 2.5 hours of continuous swimming. In the end we get a great model with an optimal set of features…which looks preferable in price to its Japanese rival but can not compete with it in terms of performance.
Advantages
- optimal efficiency;
- higher economy in comparison with competitors;
- Abundance of additional components and the installed generator;
- relatively low price.
Disadvantages
- not found.
HDX F 20 BMS
Rating: 4.6

20 hp outboard motor, which became a real bestseller among professional fishermen due to its abnormally low price for such a productive unit. It weighs 66 kilograms, which is a clear indication that it should be used with heavy-duty boats and boats with a capacity of up to 5 people. Fuel consumption at maximum modes of action is 7.3 liters per hour, and at this rate F 20 BMS gets power reserve of 3 hours, because the external fuel tank holds 24 liters of gasoline.
It is worth mentioning that big dimensions are connected with voluminous cylinders, the working space of which is 498 cubic centimeters. There is a system of emergency shutdown of the motor, the speed limiter, preventing overheating of the engine, as well as the exhaust, which goes through the propeller and significantly reduces the overall noise. There is an adjustable angle of inclination of the motor, but to swim across shallow water with it is still not recommended. As a result, the user will get a worthy representative of the category of strong units, capable to bear really much, and costing for their conditions only pennies.
Advantages
- Low consumption for such a powerful engine (7.3 liters per hour);
- External fuel tank, designed for 24 liters of gasoline (AI-92);
- A very attractive price;
- The optimum dimensions in relation to its performance.
Disadvantages
- did not find.
The best high horsepower boat engines
Yamaha F350 AETX
Rating: 4.9

Finally, the leading position in the rating is occupied by the boat motor of enormous power, with a working volume of 5330 cubic centimeters. This marine “monster” – the development to complete very expensive boats racing or recreational purposes, capable of recouping the enormous costs of acquisition and operation. 350 horsepower in the Yamaha F350 AETX is generated through the work of eight cylinders that have a V-shaped arrangement to save space and reduce linear dimensions. Injector is used as a fuel supply system with the ability to adjust the injection, which increases the acceleration potential to provide competitive claims.
As a separate point, it is necessary to allocate the approach to the equipment of Yamaha F350 AETX with various sensors, allowing to control practically each parameter of the engine in real time. Yamaha F350 AETX comes with a choice of 13 variable speed meters, tachometer, throttle position, trim tabs and more. In two words about such a complex system is not possible to tell, so the last thing you should know – the cost of such a unit is 1.5 million rubles. Unconditional leader of the category.
Advantages
- unit for cruising or racing races;
- 350 horsepower from a 5,330 cubic-inch engine;
- possibility of control of practically all operating parameters;
- Fully electrified system, allowing the motor to be controlled by a computer;
- the highest quality and reliability parameters.
Disadvantages
- extremely high price.
Mercury 150 PRO XS L OptiMax
Rating: 4.8

American motor Mercury 150 PRO XS L OptiMax, giving out a whopping 150 horsepower, which is not too necessary for the mass consumer. Generated by the operation of six V-shaped cylinders with 2,500 cubic meters of displacement. Such unit is mounted mainly on metal boats of sport type, which function as cruising or fishing boats (which is very seldom used) in sea conditions.
Instead of the carburetor Mercury 150 PRO XS L OptiMax uses dual-phase direct fuel injection system, set up for a strictly fixed gasoline consumption to create the air-fuel mixture. This is critical in a system that “eats” liters of fuel. Naturally, with such a level of performance and cost special attention should be paid to the protection systems. Here there are four of them, based, however, on the high-profile advanced technology of the company-manufacturer. Guardian technology of SmartCraft system is responsible for engine protection against overheating and other malfunctions. Similarly “sorted out” sensors for overspeed control and oil level. As a conclusion we can say that 150 PRO XS L OptiMax is a magnificent motor, created for small group of consumers and it is natural to take a place in a rating of the best.
Advantages
- the highest quality of workmanship in the organization of operational control of the assembly at the plant;
- 150 horsepower with an engine displacement of 2,500 cubic centimeters;
- Top speed exceeds 100 kilometers per hour;
- plenty of protection systems.
Disadvantages
- not detected.
HDX T75FEL-T
Rating: 4.7

The third most powerful unit for boats, which has 75 horsepower, but costs much less than an order of magnitude weaker Japanese motors. A very strange fact, making a worthy advertisement for the already popular HDX T75FEL-T. Its displacement is 1,141 cubic centimeters, distributed over three cylinders. A small annoying point is a two-stroke system of the cylinder-piston group, which causes a small loss of fuel (about 5-7%) on the exhaust gases. In this connection, the 24-liter tank, integrated into the system, is barely sufficient for only 1.5 hours of work, which makes it necessary for the consumer to equip the motor with an additional reservoir.
It is noteworthy that in this model Hondex was implemented a system of electric engine starting, as well as a remote control system, as it is used mainly in pair with large boats and boats, designed to accommodate 10 people. The total weight of the motor is 119 kg, that’s why it causes serious problems with transportation and its installation/removal from the boat. In fact, this is where all the variety of features inherent in the HDX T75FEL-T are limited to. Excellent purchase option for those who want to buy an inexpensive “workhorse” for group races.
Advantages
- Powerful enough to haul up to 10 people and their gear
- The low price for a high-level model;
- Availability of mandatory add-ons, including an emergency engine shutdown unit;
- Very high structural reliability.
Disadvantages
- ample fuel tank capacity for 1.5 hours of cruising.
Tohatsu M50D2EPTOS
Rating: 4.6

In this section of the ranking the division of the competitors will be conducted purely by the power indicator, in this connection Tohatsu M50D2EPTOS takes the honorable fourth place. This 50-horsepower unit is a model of quality for its counterparts, skillfully operating 697 cubic meters of working volume of three cylinders and weighing 85 kilograms. Has an electric starter and remote control, which can be used when installing the motor to the transom of long boats and boats (height 381 mm).
for providing the engine with fuel is responsible for a capacious tank of 25 liters, the volume of which, however, not enough for a long time: in the maximum stroke mode gasoline burns up for 2 hours, so on additional reservoir for a long swim worth taking care in advance. As additions under the current price (330 thousand rubles) the model is equipped with an automatic hydraulic elevator, overheat sensor, pressure gauge and tachometer. To extend the life of the unit, the water pump and other water-relevant elements have been made of chrome-plated stainless steel and a number of technological measures have been taken to prevent salt deposits (when used at sea) and damage due to swimming in shallow water. In general, the motor is really good, and no serious flaws can be noted in it.
Advantages
- Plenty of means to control engine operating parameters;
- protection of the water system, including stainless steel parts;
- The optimal combination of price and workmanship;
- Low weight with a very complex and dimensional assembly;
- high popularity on the market.
Disadvantages
- not detected.
The best Chinese boat motors
Sea-Pro OTH9.9S
Rating: 4.7

The top product from the premium Chinese brand Sea-Pro, recognized as the most successful copy of a two-stroke boat motor of corresponding capacity (9.9 horsepower) from the company Yamaha. In Russia OTH9.9S suited the fishermen perfectly: it seems that most of the audience literally yearned to have at their disposal a cheaper equivalent of the Japanese units, not inferior to the latter neither in maneuverability, nor in price / quality ratio (albeit for its level).
The first thing worth noting is the low fuel consumption of just over 5 liters per hour at maximum speed and rpm. The second is the speed component. Despite the 36 kilograms of weight, added to the curb weight, it turns out to be able to accelerate the last up to 35 kilometers per hour, forcing the user to cling tightly to the tiller. The volume of the fuel tank is 12 liters, manual ignition, it is possible to swim in shallow waters. Overall, the Sea-Pro OTH9.The 9S is an excellent motor that, with the proper level of maintenance, can last more than a year.
Advantages
- bargain price (relative to premium Japanese competitors and, in particular, the original);
- low fuel consumption (5 liters per hour);
- Qualitative assembling with high reliability indicators;
- shallow water capability.
Disadvantages
- not found.
Golfstream T15BMS
Rating: 4.6

Close replica of the 15-horsepower motor from Mercury, the cost of which is certainly lower than the full-fledged original product. It has a displacement of 246 cubic meters, divided into two cylinders with a diameter of 56 millimeters. Has a weight of 37.5 pounds, part of which is taken by a roomy fuel tank volume of 24 liters, the stock of gasoline which is enough for long rafting on open water. Maximum hourly consumption at top speed here can reach 7.9 liters, in which case the net power reserve can be just over two hours.
This two-stroke engine is designed for boats with a transom height of 381 mm, but with some manipulation it can be adapted to boats with a 508-mm height to the board. tiller steering, which eliminates the possibility of controlling the motor at a distance, which, in general, does not greatly harm the overall impression. As the manufacturers assure, the entire batch of Golfstream T15VMS, supposed to be sold in Russia, undergoes a special adjustment of the carburetor on the parameters of the injection and fed portions, respecting the specifics of domestic fuel. However, experts say this is nothing more than a marketing ploy, and should be re-adjusted on purchase.
Advantages
- High power combined with plenty of fuel for extended hunting and fishing
- optimal cost level;
- high quality of the factory assembly;
- motor adjustment for transom height of 381 and 508 millimeters
Disadvantages
- Lack of optional extras.
HANGKAI M3.5HP
Rating: 4.1

A low-cost two-stroke motor from the Celestial Empire that has a 49 cubic inch engine and produces 3.5 horsepower. Not considered a quality benchmark, but provides a fairly stable use for two to three years, after which it begins to require periodic maintenance and repair. Designed for use in small rubber boats, designed for one or two people, with a transom height of 381 millimeters.
The strengths of the HANGKAI M3.5HP Consumers say the compact size, 9.56 kilograms of weight and built-in 1.3 liter fuel tank, which is enough for about 4-5 hours of swimming. It is quite natural that for such a low price it will not include the necessary functions, such as forced engine shutdown, oil pressure monitoring, the presence of a tachometer and generator. Which, however, markedly saves the unit, reducing the complexity of its manufacture and indirectly increasing reliability.
Advantages
- economical fuel consumption;
- high reliability due to the simplicity of design;
- very low price.
Disadvantages
- Low-power, designed for installation on small inflatable boats;
- build quality leaves much to be desired.
The best electric boat motors
HDX 86X
Rating: 4.9

More preferable in operational terms is the new development of the company Hondex, which partially re-qualified the production for the production of electric boat motors. The HDX 86X is a 1.2 horsepower, water-cooled electric unit with a curb weight of 13.2 kilograms. Recommended for boats not exceeding 1400 kilograms curb weight and providing up to 37.8 kilograms max towing capacity.
It is noteworthy that unlike Minn Kota Endura C2 30 the current consumption from the battery when driving at maximum speed is 84 amps. Consequently, to accelerate HDX 86X able to higher thresholds, namely up to 15 kilometers per hour, which also depends on the weight of the propelled vessel. Actually, the disadvantages in terms of battery equipment in this case did not disappear. Moreover: to be able to ride on the water for a long time is recommended to buy a battery of higher capacity (from 100 Ah). The cost in this case will also be higher, but in relation to quality and capabilities will be more justified. So, for lack of the best, we send the Chinese motor to the first place of the rating in this category – quite deservedly.
Advantages
- power of 1.2 horsepower;
- low noise level of the two-blade motor and no exhaust;
- Possibility of installation to the vessel weight up to 1400 kilograms (with the transom height within 920 millimeters);
- optimal price performance ratio.
Disadvantages
- the need to equip and transport the battery directly in the boat.
Minn Kota Endura C2 30
Rating: 4.8

Quality alternative to “dirty” gasoline engines, suitable for use with small rubber boats and boats for leisurely walks and fishing in the water. Minn Kota Endura C2 30 was created with a clear focus on compactness, which can be felt literally throughout the construction, even in spite of the size. The two-blade propeller is excellent for passing through grassy areas, and even in case of getting stuck it is easy to get out of the hedge by reversing. That’s just its speed, as well as the size is not enough to accelerate the boat more than 5 kilometers per hour – this is the maximum speed for the 5th front gear, at which the motor consumes 30 amps of current.
Judging by the responses of a few users (technology is only coming to the domestic market, and therefore the excitement around them is not great), the motor and the accompanying equipment is very easy to place in the trunk of the car. However, don’t harbor any illusions about the light weight of all this “joy” – let the engine weighs 7 kg, a 100 Ah battery more than makes up for the missing mass. Is such a thing worth the purchase? Judge for yourself, but the absence of emissions and the actual absence of noise are weighty reasons.
Advantages
- Very low noise level and no exhaust;
- compact design, which allows you to transport the motor in the trunk of the car without interference;
- fairly high quality performance;
- low price.
Disadvantages
- The need to place the battery in the boat (gel or acid-alkali;
- low top speed (up to 5 km/h).
