How to choose an oil filter

Choosing an oil filter, despite the overall simplicity of its design, includes a lot of features and subtleties that must be taken into account. Expertology magazine recommends paying special attention to the following aspects:

Filter type.There are three types of oil filters:

  1. Full-flow filters include a by-pass valve that regulates oil pressure in the lube system. It protects the seals and gaskets between the blocks from damage and rupture by allowing excess pressure to escape from the engine crankcase. In case the filter has used up completely (clogged), to avoid oil starvation, the valve allows contaminated oil to by-pass so that the engine does not overheat.
  2. Partial-flow models provide finer filtration than full-flow models, and therefore require more time to complete the cleaning process. Nevertheless, such principle of operation allows to avoid pressure drops in case of filter clogging and accidental sticking of by-pass valve.
  3. combined – extra-fine oil filters, combining the advantages of the first two types and eliminating their characteristic disadvantages. More expensive than others, but allow a significant increase in life of rubbing pairs and recommended for use in heavy-duty engines.

Serviceability of the by-pass valve.This aspect is rather difficult to check when buying a filter, but if it is possible, always make sure that the valve opening pressure is just a little bit higher (literally 0.1 bar) than the upper limit of the system relevant pressure. You are sure to keep your engine free of unfiltered oil with high abrasive particle content. Similarly, it is possible to check the check valve for tight closure, in order to prevent oil leakage when the engine is idle.

Filter paper thickness.This parameter directly affects the amount of operating life of the filter. the thicker the paper layer, the more susceptible it is to clogging and total failure. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the moments related to the maximum temperature of oil heating in the engine. Be sure to find out what is the allowable temperature of the oil filter, so as not to provoke burnout of the paper during normal engine operation.

Housing integrity. An indicator of secondary importance, which, can greatly affect the performance of the filter. Before buying always make sure that there is no external damage to the body, valves, as well as the integrity of the filter paper.

Manufacturer.In this case the value of a branded product is obvious, because the counterfeit is often subject to rapid failure, and may also lead to a number of more critical malfunctions. In this regard, we strongly recommend that you turn to the purchase of products from reputable brands that are certified to meet modern quality standards.

Best inexpensive oil filters

GoodWill

Rating: 4.7

GoodWill

Goodwill represents that rare type of manufacturer whose range contains filters in budget, medium and premium price segments. Product quality in all variations is excellent, and the durability depends a lot on the driving conditions that the user chooses, the frequency of car maintenance and its technical condition.

According to experts, the operating conditions of oil filters from GoodWill may well be enough for 15-20 thousand kilometers mileage, possibly even with the presence of residual resource. As for consumers, they, in general, speak of the product complementarily, noting its large selection in the retail market. Those who order filters through service centers located in the territory of the country complain about sluggish service and incompetence of the personnel, but now these problems are practically leveled out.

Dignity

  • Widespread prevalence in the retail market;
  • high quality filtration;
  • The life is enough for 15-20 thousand kilometers of mileage;
  • high dependence of the filter operation on the operation.

Disadvantages

  • not found.

Sakura

Rating: 4.6

Sakura

The phenomenon in the market is not new and until recently very situational, the company Sakura is the result of qualitatively done work on giving the filters the required qualities with minimum costs for their subsequent purchase. In keeping with Japanese style trends, all products are subjected to strict controls at the most important operations, eliminating secondary steps in manufacturing technology.

The results of such manipulations are more than impressive: the percentage of defects hardly reaches 4%, and the approximate operating life varies within 10 thousand kilometers. Some independent tests revealed some faults, connected with operation in severe overheating conditions, but in fact this behavior cannot be considered as a fault. User feedback, in turn, confirms the good quality of the product at nominal operating conditions, citing the stable and easy operation of the engine during operation. Supports the good reputation and the very low price, almost the same as in the case of domestically produced filters.

Advantages

  • very low cost of products;
  • The working life of one filter is sufficient for 10 thousand kilometers;
  • Low defect rate, due to strict control of production;
  • widespread prevalence in Russian cities;
  • Acceptable quality of filtration.

BelMag

Rating: 4.5

BelMag

Magnitogorsk manufacturer of budget oil filters, revived after a complete halt of production due to lack of funding and low demand for products. In-line production of BelMag was launched in 1996, when the assembly line of the domestic automobile industry urgently needed “oilers”. Being highly dependent on the only (in fact) customer, the company could not survive the decline in the auto-production niche and the arrival of new companies to the market, announcing its own closure.

The new milestone in the history of BelMag was laid when the united concern “Renault-Nissan” signed another contract for the delivery of oil filters for domestic assembly lines. Initially mediocre, the quality of the product with the build-up of capacity has gradually increased and has now reached the ceiling within the budget segment, equal to the recognized grands.

Advantages

  • oil filters for VAZ, Renault and Nissan cars;
  • High quality within the segment;
  • low price due to the selection of inexpensive materials;
  • wide availability in retail.

Disadvantages

  • none.

Autogroup

Rating: 4.5

Auto Aggregate

The Russian manufacturer, which enters the rating of the best due to the production of oil filters not only for cars, but also for trucks, providing products all over the CIS. The latter is only possible thanks to the fact that already in its infancy the company was able to guarantee the quality of the filter elements. Later our own developments were promoted by foreign technologies in order to provide “motor homes” with even higher level of compliance with the accepted quality standards.

Despite the low price of filters from Avtoagregat, it is often impossible to find them at retail. The thing is that the working principles of the company are limited by the necessity of work according to the orders, supplying a product straight to the conveyor line of plants VAZ, KamAZ, Ural, etc., which allows them to choose the most suitable size for the given product. In this regard, only a small part of produced consumables (no more than 10-15%) goes to retail, which is the most negative quality of the brand from the point of view of consumers.

Advantages

  • Work to equip conveyors car plants in the domestic and foreign markets;
  • nominally high quality of products, compliance with international quality and safety standards;
  • low price.

Disadvantages

  • Only a small proportion of oil filters reach the retail market.

BIG Filter

Rating: 4.4

BIG Filter

Without exaggeration, the leading manufacturer of filters for cars, engaged in development of inexpensive products for domestic and foreign market of spare parts. The main advantage and peculiarity of this brand is the contract on supplying consumables to the Volkswagen plants located in Russia.

According to experts, the value of “BIG Filter” is in a wide range of oil filters produced: the model range has more than 100 kinds of products that have passed multi-stage testing for compliance with quality standards. In particular, special attention is focused on ensuring the proper operation of the shutoff valves, preventing oil leakage when the engine is idle. As for the customers, many prefer to replace standard filters by “BIG” filters during the period of catch-up working life, and, in general, are satisfied with the quality of the engine’s work. It is noteworthy that the company is always seeking to update its product range, and has recently been putting more and more technologically advanced products on the market.

Advantages

  • development of filter elements for domestic and foreign automobile companies;
  • high degree of recognizability of the products (characteristic green body color);
  • proper manufacturing quality;
  • Reasonable price tag on the entire range.

Disadvantages

  • not detected.

The best oil filter manufacturers in terms of price-performance ratio

Bosch

Rating: 4.9

Bosch

Probably the most diligent manufacturer of oil filters in the low-price segment, showing excellent results in terms of the quality of its products. In essence, the quality of oil filtration from impurities in Bosch filters can be called a benchmark at all stages of depletion lifetime: neither the bypass valve nor the cartridge have problems with providing functions at later stages of operation.

According to experts, the only problem that haunts some Bosch oil filters is the overestimation of their normal operating time, which causes a wave of resentment and incomprehension in the minds of most users. The explanation is simple enough: given the concentration of the corporation in producing a wide range of products (from power tools to other consumables from auto parts) control of storage and transportation processes is very difficult. This factor can only be compensated by the low cost of the product, which encourages car owners to buy.

Advantages

  • The low cost of almost the entire range of oil filters;
  • high quality of oil purification from impurities;
  • Abundance of supply in retail;
  • low reject rate.

Disadvantages

  • Some filters exhaust their working life before the specified period.

Hengst

Rating: 4.8

Hengst

According to world experts, the company Hengst is one of the leaders in the segment in terms of the number of cooperating relations with the world famous car manufacturers. It took more than 50 years to establish relationships and make the brand what it is today, but the status gained is definitely worth it. Painstaking work resulted in the signing of contracts to supply oil filters to assembly lines of Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Isuzu, BMW and many others, after which the company has become known as the most popular company in its niche.

As users note, such a complete element in the oil purification system from impurities has a positive impact on the safety of the engine, creating excellent conditions for its stable operation throughout the life of the filter. If we talk about the scale of production, Hengst for all time it has produced about 5 thousand different filter modules, which have always become highly competitive, even in comparison to premium models.

Advantages

  • A large number of contracts for the supply of the product directly to the car assembly line;
  • More than 5 thousand oil filters, developed over the history of the company;
  • High service life, strictly limited by the driving habits of the vehicle owner;
  • Adequate prices and excellent correlation of price and quality.

Disadvantages

  • not found.

Fram

Rating: 4.8

Fram

Like Purflux, Fram is a member of the Sogefi group, whose name is synonymous with “quality” and “durability. In contrast to its premium analogues, this brand is focused exclusively on the release of products for the retail market, pursuing the goal of equipping used cars with oil filters.

The choice of such a specific target audience is by no means accidental, and the calculation here is focused on the mass consumer. As a consequence, high sales figures at an average price tag, thousands of satisfied customers and high places in all kinds of ratings of the best. Besides, the main advantage of the Fram brand for experts is environmental friendliness (expressed in the creation of “light” versions of the filters) and the aiming at the constant expansion of the product range. Given the breadth of the business, this brand clearly could not pass over the top three nominees.

Advantages

  • Aimed at the aftermarket in general and second-hand vehicles in particular;
  • Development of “lighter” versions of filters, which are characterized by less contaminating waste while maintaining performance;
  • constant expansion of the assortment;
  • average price level.

Disadvantages

  • were not found.

Nitto

Rating: 4.7

Nitto

Japanese filter element company founded in 1959 in Ibaraki Prefecture, where the main production facility is located. According to an official study conducted in 2017, is the largest player in the segment (surpassed by Union on this measure), accounting for more than 20% of Japan’s domestic market.

The main advantage of Nitto lies in its focus on the observance of the strictest control in all aspects of production: from the selection of raw materials to the stages of packaging filters. This approach to business, together with compliance with international standards ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, approved the introduction of innovations, allowed to significantly improve the level of operating life (up to 30-40 thousand kilometers with normal operation of the car), while maintaining a fairly loyal to the consumer price range.

Advantages of

  • high marks from world expert councils and experienced users;
  • Work on the introduction of innovations in the technology of the filters manufacturing;
  • More than 15 years of experience in the domestic market;
  • Increased service life of products.

Disadvantages

  • not revealed.

Hyundai/KIA

Rating: 4.6

Hyundai-KIA

The narrowly specialized Korean-made oil filters, designed for installation in cars of the same brand. From the beginning of production, they enjoyed low popularity among consumers, although they were meant to be installed at service centers under warranty. The reason for this was extremely unstable quality of work, accompanied by the rapid depletion of the resource and the need for rapid replacement of the element for a new one.

The situation improved over time, mainly due to the opening of a full research department to test existing and prototype models. The Korean engineers managed to identify the weakest points in the design of oil filters, and then began painstaking work to fix them over the course of several years. Currently Hyundai/KIA branded products are more favored than competitors from Nitto, Sakura or the more established Union.

Advantages of

  • high working life;
  • possibility of ordering through the company’s service centers and, as a consequence, good service;
  • average prices for original products.

Disadvantages

  • residual presence of some “defects” to be soon rectified.

SCT

Rating: 4.5

SCT

The German company SCT is positioned by many experts as a full-fledged competitor of the Mann company, but with a much smaller scope in terms of financing and production volumes. The main “point” of sales of oil filters for it are CIS countries, the main one, of course, is Russia. Domestic consumers have first-hand knowledge of the product and speak quite well of it. Yes, in a large range found a place and not very successful representatives, but it is rather an exception to the rule than a well-established pattern.

As in case of Mahle, the main advantage of SCT company consists in adequate price policy, which maintains fine balance between price and performance parameters. According to experienced car owners, it’s a great option to buy in the mid-price segment, especially for older cars.

Advantages

  • optimal combination of price and performance parameters;
  • The widespread distribution of the product in Russia;
  • High quality filtration of the lubricating fluid;
  • low level of defects and fakes on the secondary market.

Disadvantages

  • Some models have a very short lifespan.

The best producers of oil filters in the premium segment

Mahle

Rating: 4.9

Mahle

Like Mann, Mahle is a representative of the German group of producers involved in the production of oil filters. But unlike its competitor it pays much more attention to the secondary market, shipping “oil cans” to assembly lines of no less significant car manufacturers in its country (just look at cooperation with BMW and Mercedes-Benz). Besides all other things, Mahle is an active developer of expensive consumables for VAZ cars – by coincidence it is possible to observe them in Priora cars taken off the assembly line nowadays.

According to the manufactures themselves, the lifetime of an oil filter may be enough for a run of 50 thousand kilometers. Experts, on the whole, support this statement, but they hardly believe in such an exorbitant figure, converging on a much less embarrassing 30 thousand mileage. For consumers, on the other hand, fine filtration parameters come first, which makes the engine run surprisingly “clean”. Taking all the above into account, even with a small correction for the buzzwords, an investment in a Mahle product will be quite justified.

Advantages

  • declared service life of oil filters is up to 50 thousand kilometers;
  • availability of strict quality control, as well as a careful selection of materials and raw materials for the initial stage of production;
  • introduced the concept of making valves out of high-strength, heat-resistant rubber;
  • Large concentration of original product on the aftermarket.

Disadvantages

  • high price.

urflux

Rating: 4.8

Purflux

The brand of Sogefi Group, which stands for reliable and adequately priced filters for cleaning crankcase oil from foreign substances. By saying “adequately evaluated”, we mean the appropriateness of the value assigned to the performance, violation of which is sometimes “sinned” by no less distinguished competitors.

According to tradition in the premium segment, Sogefi (read: Purflux) pursues a complex policy of providing consumers with the highest quality products, which is reflected in a whole research complex (although not of the same scale as at Union). According to customers, a careful comparison of the performance of these oil filters with others often reveals a slight Purflux advantage in value, or rational design, which is a big plus to the brand. Experts point out the original shape of the filter paper (it is herringbone-shaped), which does not make any sense except for the difficulty in counterfeiting. For a number of small details and a very competent pricing policy the brand deserves the second place in the ranking.

Advantages

  • Loyal price policy towards consumers;
  • High quality filter elements;
  • The “craftiness” of the shape of the individual components of the cartridge, making counterfeiting more difficult;
  • research center.

Disadvantages

  • is not detected.

Mann

Rating: 4.8

Mann

Mann company is a product of merger of two of the oldest German manufacturers of auto parts (Filterwerk Mann and Hummel GmbH), which has expanded up to the scale of the major existing corporation of the entire Europe. Has a very strict approach to quality control of its products, which has a positive impact on the percentage of defects (less than 2% of the total). Production control here starts right from the preparation of raw materials, which eliminates even the slightest deviations from the nominal inputs as the creation of the product progresses.

According to the users, the quality of Mann oil filters is shown not only by the degree of filtration, but also by the notorious increase in their lifetime. As for the experts, they note an extremely risky, but very effective method of supplying a newly developed product directly to the conveyor lines of prominent automakers, which include the entire VAG-group, as well as a number of well-known brands in Russia (“Nissan”, “Peugeot”, etc.).d.). It is also worth noting the manufacturer’s focus on producing products for the retail market in quantities sufficient to meet the needs of car owners.

Advantages

  • The largest representative of European producers of oil filters, which is the title supplier of a large number of the world’s automakers;
  • The production of filter elements for domestic automobiles;
  • Quality control at all stages of product development.

Disadvantages

  • Availability of a large number of counterfeit products in retail.

Union

Rating: 4.7

Union

The renowned manufacturer of premium oil filters from Asia, which is included in the rating due to its excellent reputation among the consumer segment. It has general agreements with the vast majority of car manufacturers in Japan, Korea and China to supply assembly lines with oil filters: they can be found in the large volume vehicles of Lexus, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, etc.d.

According to experts, the main advantage of Union is in innovation and continuous search for better technological solutions. According to this indicator no competitor can compare to the brave Japanese corporation: each year the brand spends almost a third of its total income on research in the field of oil filtration and increase of service life of separate elements (including internal combustion engines). This step on the one hand allows to move forward the whole market area, but on the other hand does not allow the company to lose relevance in today’s environment.

Advantages

  • innovation in the development of new technical and technological solutions, the maintenance of its own research center;
  • The strict compliance with the world quality standards;
  • the highest quality of oil filtration;
  • A very low percentage of defects, achieved through strict operational control;
  • large support of the retail market by releasing a part of their production for sale.

Disadvantages

  • very high price for the original product.
