*Best batteries according to the editorial. About the selection criteria. This material is subjective, not an advertisement and is not a guide to buying. Before purchasing, please consult with an expert.
Cars from Togliatti on our roads represent the whole history of the plant until now: from VAZ-2101 begotten by “Fiat” to the new Vest and X-RAY, which have already “risen on the platform” of Rena
- t-Nissan. But sooner or later any car will need a new battery, no matter what generation it is – it remains to choose it correctly (especially given that in many regions of our winters they have a hard time).
- Good characteristics at an affordable price
- Moderate drop in starting current and reserve capacity in cold weather

- Too sensitive to operating conditions
- Excellent starting characteristics
- Cold resistance
- Fast charge set
- high price
- High starting currents under normal operating conditions
- Reasonable price for the AGM-battery

- High starting currents
- Preservation of performance in the cold
- Unstable quality
For obvious reasons all VAZ cars used and are used batteries “European” type, with two round terminals of large diameter, not protruding over the cover. The only difference is polarity – if originally and for a long time VAZ used the “straight” polarity (actually, why we call it straight), then together with the “Renault-Nissan” platform now in the new cars came the “reverse” polarity. However, we will not divide the batteries into groups on this basis because each manufacturer in the series produced by the same technology has variants with different capacity and usually with different polarity – that is the comparison of two batteries with direct polarity and capacity 55 A*h can be directly projected onto batteries of the same series, but, say, with a capacity 65 A*h and reverse polarity.

The best calcium batteries for VAZ cars
Tyumen Premium
Rating: 4.9

Batteries of this line with the price/quality ratio and good characteristics in frost are with enviable consistency in the top tests of the automotive press. Indeed, the Russian manufacturer was able to achieve at a moderate cost performance characteristics and does not save on the active mass of the plates (and the resource is directly related to this): a “junior” battery in this line, 6ST-50L, weighs 13.5 kg (and many foreign batteries a little more weigh the battery capacity and under 65 Ah) and gives starter current of 440 A standard EN with a reserve capacity of 79 minutes. More relevant for VAZ cars can be called a 6ST-60LA and 6ST-64L (60 and 64 A * h capacity, respectively, 540 and 620A starter current. Backup capacity 98 and 106 minutes).
These batteries are atypical for calcium batteries (which in fact are designed as maintenance-free), however, have open plugs of the jars – this allows you to check the electrolyte density without problems if necessary. However, it should be taken into consideration when buying that this series also has a characteristic disadvantage: batteries bear a deep discharge poorly (in comparison with many competitors), it is not always possible to “reanimate” them. That means we can recommend them mainly for fairly “fresh” cars, where charging problems and leakage can be expected too early. On the other hand, the higher reliability of competitors is compensated by the higher price. When buying a battery, it is definitely worth checking the battery load fork and look at the date of manufacture.

Akom + EFB
Rating: 4.8

Average-priced batteries promise double life on the label and even weigh a lot (“junior” in the line of 55 Ah is more than 16 kg). At the standard rate of loss of active mass a battery with such a stock of lead will really show a good cycle life. A decent plate area is indicated by starter currents: for 55 A*h – 560 A, for 60 A*h – 580 A, for 65 A*h – 670 A.
Despite the bad reputation of the previous lines of batteries among owners and average test results, in its top series the manufacturer has shown good stability of quality and preservation of sufficient characteristics in cold. The battery life of this line in practice is good, taking into account the price, we can give it a high rating score, even though the improvement of properties and reliability achieved frankly “in the head”. By increasing the mass of the plates.

VARTA Blue Dynamic
Rating: 4.7

But these batteries are well known to their owners and our experts as “survivable” in severe conditions, well tolerating deep discharge – but at the same time the price of the same capacity “Warta” will cost on the average one and a half times more than the Tyumen battery. This line itself is positioned as designed for cars with average power consumption – that is just for Togliatti cars, which are not yet saturated with electronics and “Start-Stop” systems.
Of the models relevant to most VAZ cars (excluding “Oka”), the battery line with a capacity of 52 A * h can give 470 A starter current, at 60 Ah capacity it is 540 A. According to formal electrical parameters Warta is equal to Tyumen, but it “gives up” quicker in the cold (maximum current output reduces in several tests, reserve capacity drops). Taking into account the best service life and deep-discharge resistance in regions with warm climate, we may call Varta Blue Dynamic the best choice (if finances allow), but Tumen is in the lead in the rating.
The jar plugs in these batteries are completely hidden under the lid, no access to them. No “eyelet” for inspection either.

Mutlu SFB 3
Rating: 4.6

This series is a development of already popular series of Calcium Silver, which did not bring in the construction of the battery major changes: upgraded the lattice plates and ventilation system, but more importantly, it increased the cyclic resistance of the battery. Characteristically, the upgrade has also reduced the cost of the battery (the same strength plates achieved at their lower mass), so be aware that the battery cycle life is highly dependent on operating conditions: the battery is more sensitive to deep discharge than the old series.
Batteries are available in both forward and reverse polarity. Models with the capacity of 63 A*h (starting current – 600A) are available in the size that allows using the battery on VAZ cars: these are good parameters for a classic calcium-calcium battery, SFB 3 frost resistance is also quite high. However, by the price/quality/reliability ratio, according to the reviews of the owners Varta looks better – although you have to consider that the series Blue Dynamic has been on sale in our country for much longer and has more reviews at least because of this.

Topla Energy
Rating: 4.5

Slovenian batteries in tests show themselves well, but with nuances. They have a high starter current (also when tested in the cold): 550 A at the capacity of 55 A * h, 600 A at the capacity of 60 A * h (batteries with these capacities are just the right size for VAZ cars), so the first cranks of the cold engine they provide reliable, even when the load on the starter (and thus the current consumption) increases in comparison with normal conditions. However, at the same time the reserve capacity inevitably suffers, frequent attempts to start the battery quickly make the “exhausted”.
For an up and running car with no preconditions for a hard starting we can say that this battery is a good choice. Also suitable for cold regions. But for old cars with worn-out engines, carburetors or injection systems that are not in the best condition would be more justified to choose the battery, which shows a more “stayer” nature – with it the starter will turn even slower, but longer. Besides for old cars the question of price is actual, and the price level of Topla batteries is comparable with that of Varta Blue Dynamic.

TAB Polar Blue
Rating: 4.4

Batteries of the second Slovenian company in our rating from the series, suitable for VAZ cars, we can actually call Twin Topla Energy batteries both in characteristics and real behavior. Therefore, the question of choice should rather be dictated by the difference in prices for the same type of batteries in a particular store and the dates of manufacture (naturally, it is more logical to choose a battery that has been stored less).
Advantages
Disadvantages
Bosch S4 Silver
Rating: 4.3

These batteries are among the most expensive calcium batteries in our ranking today, which already directly affects its scores. Models S4 002 and S4004 are actual for modern VAZ cars with reverse polarity, S4 005 and S4006 for “classics” and front-drive family from “eight” to “priora. These have a capacity of 52 and 60 ampere-hours, respectively, with a starting current of 470 and 540 ampere: an average rating compared to the competition.
In tests, unfortunately, the Bosch also consistently fails, the reviews of owners are also not the best. Average reserve capacity, high sensitivity to cold and deep discharge definitely does not allow us to recommend this line of batteries for the northern regions and old cars that have problems with starting. And, since there are better batteries for less money, Bosch inevitably falls at the bottom of the ranking.

Best AGM-batteries for VAZ cars
VARTA Silver Dynamic AGM
Rating: 4.9

This line of batteries was developed taking into account the specifics of cars equipped with Start-Stop systems: frequent starting cycles, therefore – the ability to quickly gain a charge to maintain a positive energy balance and a high cycle life. Compatibility with systems “Start-Stop” for VAZ cars is not critical, but resource and ability to quickly replenish wasted energy is useful in urban operation mode, with short and frequent trips (especially in cab and delivery services).
Varta offers batteries in sizes relevant to VAZ with a capacity of 60 amp-hours at a starting current of 680 A, 70 A*h at a current of 760 A. This in itself is a very good indicator, sufficient for cold start of any VAZ engine. Also withstands long starting attempts, while maintaining good current efficiency. However, the high quality of the battery has a downside: for the price of one AGM-battery of Varta you can buy two calcium batteries.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Tudor AGM
Rating: 4.8

These batteries with comparable to Varta specifications (for VAZ fits version with 60A*h and 680A starting current, or 70A*h with 760A) are cheaper, which is certainly attractive to owners of budget cars. In a direct comparison, however, the Varta wins in terms of real performance under harsh conditions – in particular, it stands up better to long starting attempts in the cold.
It is worth considering that exactly in such conditions classic type batteries can even win over AGM with inert filler between the plates. In this scenario, inexpensive (by the standards of its class) AGM batteries actually perform at half the price of an average calcium battery. And, if “Warta” (although literally expensive) managed to achieve a good balance of performance, the Tudor for a strong cold we can not recommend: in this case, it makes more sense to buy a good calcium battery and even save on this. A strong focus on Start-Stop systems with frequent but brief start-up cycles of an already warmed-up engine.
Advantages
Disadvantages
Exide Start-Stop AGM
Rating: 4.7

Here the manufacturer explicitly emphasizes the aim of the battery on the Start-Stop system, and the current characteristics and the battery capacity of 60 and 70 A * h are exactly the same as in Varta and Tudor. By the price Exide is slightly more expensive, than Tudor (by the way, this brand already belongs to Exide for almost 30 years, so we are now talking about “in-firm” competition) – and it is distinctly compensated by the test results by the best behavior Exide in cold.
However, at the same time the owners’ reviews point out the pronounced sensitivity of these batteries to the deep discharge (which is atypical for AGM as a whole, the plates cannot “crumble” because of the filler) and in general the noticeable decrease of Exide batteries quality, which is directly connected with the transfer of battery production to the countries with cheaper labor costs. So overall, we’ll give the Tudor a higher place in the ranking.
