Koluna: Features and types

In Europe, colunoid axes appeared during the Roman Emperor Octavian Augustus. In the Middle Ages, their distribution was widespread. Their difference was that their width was only one third of the height, and the additional side details were also present. Over time, the Slavic peoples “took adopted” other products, but the Finno-Ugric tribes used this type of ax long enough, up to the 15th century.

In our time, the colons are distinguished by a powerful prismatic web with a blued blade, an inclination angle – approximately 32 degrees Weight of products may vary from 1.5 kg to 6 kg. Usually, in everyday life, you can find an ax, which weighs 3.5 kg, and the dimensions of the tool can fluctuate. The length of the axle can reach one meter – such a long lever is necessary when you have to handle viscous wood with high moisture content.

    Koluna for rods firewood happens:

    • screw (conical shape);
    • hydraulic;
    • Electric.

    The first view is the most common, it uses 80% of consumers. The steel of the conical shape has a solid thread, can dive into the material using an electric engine. Cone koluns are used to work on the harvesting of firewood. On trading platforms you can find prepared sets that allow you to collect a similar tool in a few minutes.

    The axle is made of durable varieties of wood, and the handle can be made of oak, ash or birch. Sharpening is usually carried out at an angle of 40-50 degrees.

    Koluny are differentiated on such types:

    • massive;
    • spicy.

    The first view is often confused with a sledgehammer – as they are similar, the second look has a more pointed blade. Also koluna can be litas and forged. Fundamental differences between them are not observed.

    Kolun’s blade can be:

    • sharpened by a wedge;
    • “Lopower”.

      The latter view can be considered a novelty, workers with great practical experience belong to Him with distrust, express critical comments. Manufacturers in the instructions argue that this tool can only work with dry firewood. When choosing a tool, this fact is recommended to take into account.

      Wooden Kolun details possess disadvantages – they can spontaneously split. In recent years, they began to produce pens from new material – Fibergles. This composite material is distinguished by strength and ease. The advantage is that the return to the hand is noticeably less than the wooden handle, the material is able to actively absorb vibration. Also from Fibergles can make a toporishche very long, which positively affects the strength of impact.

      What is it needed for?

      There is a wide variety of collean models that make noticeably facilitate physical work, helping to throw firewood in a short period of time. Colun is noticeably different from the ax – this tool is intended exclusively for rods. Externally, there are also noticeable differences. Colon looks like a sharpened metal saush hat weighing at least 3-4 kg. It has a long durable ax, which allows you to extract the tool even from very viscous wood. You can almost any tree with such a tool, and the alternative to Kolun has not yet come up with. Its design is simple and functional, this can be explained by why this tool is popular for many hundreds of years.

      Modern technologies and materials allow you to improve the traditional Kolun design. In our time, Kolunov had different types, among which are such:

      • with a shifted center;
      • manual cone;
      • Rack and spacers;
      • severe forged;
      • with electric or gasoline engine (automatic).

      Modern developments are well managed by the Finnish company Vipukirves, offering a wide variety of models that have a “floating” center of gravity.

      Usually additional adaptations to the main product are not suiced, sometimes their design is quite complicated.

      Consider several types of kisuns that are especially popular.

      Screw woodcut

      Got a big distribution among the agrarians, make an independently such a tool is not a great difficulty. To make a screw column with an electrical drive, you will need:

      • The engine with a capacity of at least 1.8 kW;
      • roller with an outfilled bearing;
      • pulley;
      • cut cone;
      • metal sheet with a thickness of 5 mm;
      • Corners “4”;
      • pipes 40 mm;
      • bearing.

        If you put the engine for 450 revolutions per minute, then the need to mount the pulley will disappear, then the cone is permissible to simply attach to the shaft. The optimal choice is therefore – this is the number of revolutions from 400 per minute. Cone can be ordered from tokar or pull out the predetermined drawing. The material from which the column is being made is steel with a high carbon content. The thread must be in a step of 7 mm, and the turns can reach 2 millimeters. Pulleys are pulled out of ordinary steel. The size of the groove is determined by the pulley parameters.

        To assemble a column that works on the screw principle, it is necessary to make the basis for the beginning, put the slab under the table top, on which the engine will hold, and on it, in turn – the shaft. You can also fix the cone and pulley, and then put and stretch the belt. After that, you can move to tests.

        Hydraulic woodcut

        It has good power and performance. The stationary tool is massive, works using a cylinder in which the working pressure is provided by the pump. Put on one shaft with an electric engine, it is also important to consider what the node can be put even on the other end of the room (optional on the bed). The connection can be made using special hoses.

        After the drawings are selected and the necessary nodes are bought, you should think about how to make the shape of a kolun. Cook from metal – this is the easiest solution. The dimensions can be any. Here the power of the cylinder is determining. It should be enough to split massive wooden rolls, which are pretty saturated moisture. Such a material has the greatest viscosity coefficient, it is especially difficult to work with it.

        Cross Colong

        The shape is mounted on the bed so what the transverse axis coincides with the shaft, which is attached to the hydraulic cylinder, connecting with the pump with hoses.

        You can also mechanize the column by attaching the wheels.

        What is different from the ax?

        Colun is a type variety. This tool is intended, first of all, for splitting overalls. Kolun’s blade also differs from the ax blade: it is a wedge-shaped and weighs at least 3.5 kg. Kolong is not chop, like an ax, – he splits the material. The fundamental difference is precisely in this. During working with Kolun, the power of impact is important, and during working with the ax, it is important how sharpness is sharpened.

        Kolong can be compared with a sledgehammer, its blade is sharpened at an angle of 45 degrees, which allows you to split even massive lanes, where many bitch.

        Koluna come:

        • Forged;
        • all-metal (licensed).

        For a middle-aged man with standard physical abilities, a column with weight of the blade is up to 3 kg.

        Rating the best models

        We will conduct a small overview of the most popular models, among which there are samples from American, German and Russian manufacturers.

        • Topor Calon Matrix Weight of 3 kg with a fiberglass handle. The product is made of steel grade 66g, hardness coefficient – 50 HRC. To accurately and effectively split even massive wooden fragments, from the rear head is equipped with a small anvil. The fiberglass handle is made of the most modern material, never turns, does not sweep and swells.

        • Colong “Bars” from Nylon has a weight of 750 grams, can work with all rocks of the tree. The working part of the columan is made of steel U14, the hardness of the cutting edge at an altitude of up to 2.5 cm is 47-53 HRC on the Rockwell scale, sharpening angle – about 28 degrees. On the sides there are thickening – it helps to effectively split the wood. In the lower part of the axle there are special rubber “quoters” of mechanical impulses. Material strength above average values. The product is for sale in a solid cover from PVC.

        • Colon Inforce (3.65 kilograms). 910 mm long handle is designed to split large sausages, ideal when bilking fuel. The product has a little weight and good strength.

        • Colong The Great Divider Weight of 4 kg with a fiberglass handle. The tool is made of steel grade 65g, hardness coefficient – 55 HRC. This device can split any fragments, the pharmosphere is made of the fiberglax material, withstands significant loads and protects from excess vibration.
        • Colong of the Russian production “Vortex” Weigh 3 kg. It has a wooden pipeline covered with a layer of damper rubber. Length reaches 80 cm.

        The tool is effective for splitting massive wooden fragments.

        • Very popular now and German Colong Stihl 8812008 (Weight – 3 kg, the length of the hatch – 80 cm). There are rubberized lining. The model weighs a little, effective in work on the harvesting of firewood.
        • One of the oldest companies producing axes and koluna is Fiskars. The company appeared in the 17th century in Sweden. Koluni from “Fiscars” is a combination of modern design, strength, convenient capture of the handle and have become a special strength. During operation, a thoughtful design guarantees a harmonious combination of the power of impact and ease of operation. Mitigating elements on the axle are made of modern fibercomp material. This innovative fiberglass is stronger than Damask steel and has a minimal weight. All items of the product are not subject to corrosion or rust. Most Popular Model – Fiskars X17.

        How to choose?

        The tool selection is dictated by such criteria:

        • weight;
        • material;
        • The dimensions of the axle;
        • Shape shape.

        Pick up the instrument that would correspond to the physical data of the employee – this is not the simplest task. If the column is too light, it will be difficult to split massive fragments, and when working a heavy tool will be spent more physical effort, but at the same time split heavy pigs will be much simpler.

        It is also important that the axle is made of durable wood, which has “binding” properties. The load handle is experiencing significant, so it should have the above qualities. A short handle is also not suitable – it is hard to work with it. Pens that are made of PVC or from steel – this is not the best choice. There are such axes are expensive, but it is inconvenient to work like a tool. Such a tool will not be able to pruning the trunks impregnated with moisture, the diameter of which is more than 25 cm. Toporishche in such a material is stuck quite often.

        The maternity hosts tend to use one of two types of ax: classic or wedge. The first view is convenient to handle the freshwater wood, in which there is a lot of moisture. Second view conveniently pricking dry trimming logs.

        Cone axes just use, they are quite effective (especially in working with massive wooden blanks). The Chute is installed perpendicularly, the screw rushes into it, then she splits. Work is simply mechanical.

        Hydraulic drive helps in solving production tasks – it makes it possible to divide the lamps at once.

        It makes sense to use such a device, if working with massive wood blanks is constantly, because the hydraulic colon is quite expensive.

        Operating tips

        Colong, like an ax, is a tool of high trauma, so it should be improved and used in compliance with precautions.

        Many questions arise when choosing a product – the tool must ideally comply with the physical data of the employee. Find the perfect option is possible only when the column will be tested in practice. Even experienced woodpeakers are not always “guessing”, which column they are perfect.

        It is important to correctly pick up a deck – it must be medium diameter, its height should be 5 centimeters above the knee.

          Starting work, you should take care of gloves and glasses. Also, the clothes should be free enough, it should not shine movement. During operation within a radius of 2 meters, there should be no people or animals – chips can fly away with considerable speed and injure others.

          From the standard medium sized chocks, it turns out 4-5. Larger chocks can “issue” 10 lane. When working does not make sense to split a massive fragment of a tree immediately. Much wiser to cut the tree from different sides, rocking fragments.

          Length in winter it is better to hold on the outdoors – then the wood will not be splashing and loose. When working with wood, it is recommended to start working with those places where there are cracks. Often Koluna insert into such notches and beat them with sledgehames.
