We compare Sinupret and Tonsilgon | Which is better and how they differ

In the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory diseases, herbal remedies are actively used. They work gently, are well tolerated, rarely cause adverse reactions and effectively cope with inflammation. Some phytopreparations have an immunomodulatory effect and prevent a relapse of the disease.

Today we focus on two herbal medicines – Sinupret and Tonsilgon. These products differ in composition and solve different problems. We can not say which version is better – they act on different parts of the inflammatory process, can be used simultaneously or consecutively by courses. But we will compare the effects of herbal components on the body and tell you how they differ.

Medicinal plants against cough and runny nose: let’s compare the composition

Tonsilgon and Sinupret belong to the antiseptics of plant origin. They are produced by one company – “Bionorika” (Russia). The experts of our magazine compared the composition of drugs and found that it is different – there is not a single repeating component.

How phytopreparations work?

The wide range of action of the drugs is due to their composition. We studied the components of each drug and found out how they differ from each other.

Sinupret

Sinupret

Combined herbal remedy has antiseptic and moderate antibacterial activity. It destroys and/or inhibits the development of pathogens that infest the upper respiratory tract. Facilitates secretion from the sinuses. It relieves inflammation, reduces swelling and eases nasal breathing. Prevents the development of complications of viral and bacterial respiratory infections.

Read more about each component:

  1. Primrose. Facilitates nasal breathing by discharging nasal mucus secretion. It has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.

  2. Gentian and elderberry. Enhances nasal sinus secretion.

  3. Sorrel. It has anti-inflammatory and secretory action. Strengthens local immunity.

  4. Verbena. Has an antiviral effect, facilitates the discharge of viscous mucus. Strengthens the immune system.

Clinical reviews have shown that Sinupret acts on influenza and parainfluenza viruses, and also enhances the effect of antibiotics. It will not replace specific antiviral and antibacterial therapy, but will accelerate recovery with complex treatment.

There is an opinion that herbal medicines are not as effective as synthetic ones. But this is not the case with Sinupret. Clinical studies show that the action of the phytopreprat is comparable to synthetic mucolytics.

Analysis of the medical literature allows us to conclude: Sinupret not only relieves inflammation and restores sinus drainage, but also breaks the vicious circle in chronic sinusitis. It reduces the risk of relapse and increases the period of remission. After a course of application, a person can forget about the usual runny nose for a while.

Tonsilgon

Tonsilgon

Tonsilgon affects mainly the mucous membrane of the throat. All of its components have these effects to a greater or lesser extent:

  1. Anti-inflammatory: relieve swelling, reduce the overgrowth of lymphoid tissue, eliminate associated symptoms (sore throat).

  2. Antibacterial: destroys bacteria and viruses. Action is unspecific and moderate.

Clinical trials show that Tonsilgon has an immunostimulatory effect. Against the background of treatment the content of immunoglobulin G and T-lymphocytes in the blood increases. It is these components that are responsible for the immune response in inflammatory diseases. The positive changes in the immune system last for several months. This allows us to recommend Tonsilgon as a remedy for chronic tonsillitis and other similar conditions.

Let’s compare the effectiveness of herbal remedies

Let's compare the effectiveness

According to international recommendations, only drugs with proven clinical efficacy can be used in practical medicine. To do so, the chosen remedy must undergo randomized placebo-controlled trials. Must be a large sample – many participants from different medical institutions. Only then is the drug recognized by the international pharmacological community.

Serious clinical trials are always complicated, long and expensive. Not every drug company can afford such trials. In this case there are other, less complicated and time-consuming trials. Practitioners are left to trust the tests conducted and focus on their own experience with particular drugs.

We have analyzed the foreign literature on the drugs in question, and we have not found a single serious study proving their effectiveness. There are only 52 reviews devoted to Sinupret in the PubMed database, two articles to Tonsilgon. None of these allow herbal medicines to be labeled as having proven efficacy. Therefore we referred to Russian-speaking sources and found the necessary information in them.

Sinupret

Sinupret is a relatively new drug only for the Russian pharmaceutical market. In Western Europe it has been used since 1934. Such a long experience of use has allowed us to study in detail all aspects of the drug’s action.

Sinupret is well established:

  1. The drug is used in the therapy of chronic sinusitis. It has been shown that the herbal remedy can be used at exacerbation of the disease and for its prevention, as well as in the postoperative period in ENT practice.

  2. The effectiveness of Sinupret is confirmed by clinical and endoscopic data. During treatment, the condition of patients improves: nasal congestion disappears, the discharge decreases. On objective examination and endoscopic examination of the ENT organs no signs of active inflammation were noticed.

  3. Sinupret enhances the effect of antibacterial drugs. It is included in the scheme of complex therapy and significantly reduces the symptoms of the acute period of the disease.

  4. Sinupret is recommended for acute viral sinusitis as a drug that has nonspecific antiseptic and immunostimulating effects.

  5. Sinupret reduces the duration of the disease for three days and often allows you to do without antibiotics.

There are also controversial data. In one review, the authors showed that Sinupret is not very effective in the therapy of chronic pathology, but may be recommended for the prevention of complications in acute sinusitis. Scientists stressed that more research is needed on this issue.

Tonsilgon

Tonsilgon has proven itself in the treatment of chronic upper respiratory tract pathology. There are many scientific reviews devoted to it:

  1. Many authors consider Tonsilgon a good immunomodulator. It is effective in chronic nasopharyngitis, acute and chronic tonsillitis in pediatric and therapeutic practice. Tonsilgon often allows to do without antibiotics and surgery.

  2. Tonsilgon reliably suppresses the growth of pathogenic flora, including Klebsiella oxytoca, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia co

  3. and Moraxella catarha
  4. s. No bacteria – no inflammation and recurrence of the disease.
  5. Tonsilgon is effective for tonsillitis against a background of allergic diseases. The drug fights acute pathology and reduces the risk of relapse in the chronic process.

Scheme of application

Scheme of use

Plant drugs are prescribed in a variety of situations:

  1. Sinupret will help if the nose is stuffy and there is nothing to breathe. It is prescribed for acute and chronic sinusitis with formation of viscous secretion.

  2. Tonsilgon is necessary if there is a cough and a sore throat. It is indicated in acute and chronic tonsillitis, pharyngitis and laryngitis – inflammation of the tonsils and throat.

  3. The manufacturer states that both drugs can be used together. They affect different processes, so they are prescribed simultaneously – against a sore throat and a runny nose.

  4. For chronic pathology, Sinupret and Tonsilgon can be prescribed courses of two weeks each. The dosage depends on the age and is determined by the doctor.

Peculiarities of use in children:

  1. Sinupret is prescribed from two years of age in drops and from 6 years – in drags.

  2. Tonsilgon in drops is approved from one year of age, in tablets from 6 years of age.

  3. Any form of the drug is suitable for adults. But it is important to remember: drops for oral administration contain 16-19% ethanol. This form of medication is not suitable for those who have been treated for alcohol addiction.

  4. Sinupret and Tonsilgon are prescribed during pregnancy under medical supervision – mostly after 14 weeks.

Precautions

Precautions

Tonsilon and Sinupret are well tolerated. No statistically significant differences in the frequency of adverse reactions were found. Both remedies cause these symptoms:

  1. nausea;

  2. Pain and bloating;

  3. Allergic reaction.

If unwanted effects develop, you need to stop taking the medicine and consult a doctor.

Conclusions

In a nutshell:

  1. Sinupret and Tonsilgon are combined herbal medicines. They are mild on the body, well tolerated, approved for use in childhood and pregnancy.

  2. Sinupret helps with a runny nose. It relieves nasal sinus swelling and makes breathing easier. Used for acute and chronic sinusitis.

  3. Tonsilgon is useful for cough and sore throat. It will benefit from pharyngitis and tonsillitis. The drug is suitable for frequently ill children and adults – it stimulates the immune system.

  4. Both products increase the effect of antibiotics and help fight viral infections.

Don’t try to compare Sinupret and Tonsilgon – each has its own scope and is good at what it does. If the disease has seized the nose and throat, you can take these drugs simultaneously.
