But few understands than, for example, the foam differs from polystyrene foam. And often because of this, it is impossible to choose the highest quality insulation for a particular case. Let’s try to figure out what the difference between these insulation and what to choose.
The first important criterion in which these materials should be compared – thermal conductivity, if we talk about them as about insulation. Just heat-insulating properties determine how high-quality and effective construction will be insulation, if applying a specific material. The polystyrene foam will be preferable, because the indicator of its thermal conductivity is 0.028 W / m * to. Penofoam is at the level of 0.039, that is, almost 1.5 times more.

If we talk about foam, it is created using Pentan. It is this substance that allows the smallest pores in the material, which is filled with such gas. Interestingly, only 2 percent of styrene is used in the foam, and the rest is gas. All this causes white color and his small mass. Because of the lightness, it is often used as insulation for the facade, loggia and in general for different parts of buildings.
The process of its manufacture consists of the following steps:
- Primary foaming of styrene in granules using the use of hot steam;
- Transportation of a material that has already foamed into a special chamber for drying;
- Hold out foamed granules that have already managed to cool;
- re-cooling the resulting material;
- directly cutting products from the resulting foam on specified characteristics.
Note that foaming of the material can be produced more than 2 times – everything will depend on which density should be at the finished material. Extruded expanded polystyrene is created from the same raw materials as foam. Yes, and the process of cooking such a material will be similar. The difference will be at the stage of foaming, where, when creating polystyrene foam in raw materials, special substances are added to the material. Here, the formation process is carried out using high-temperature steam in a special device called “Extruder”. It is in him that the mass receives a homogeneous consistency of high smoothness, which can be attached to various forms.
Through the hole in the extruder, the liquid material under the influence of high pressure is pushed into pre-harvested forms. The finished product after cooling will be distinguished by density, rigidity and plasticity.
Often this material is found in stores called “Penoplex”.
Patch permeability and moisture permeability
If we talk about vapor permeability, then the insulation under considerations have a fully identical indicator, which is equal to almost zero. Although the foam he will be a little higher. Because of this, for the insulation of the walls, it is preferable to apply polystyrene foam. But if we talk about moisture permeability, the penplex will have a coefficient somewhat lower.
Polyfoam absorbs more moisture due to the presence of space between polystyrene balls. To speak precisely about numbers, the extruded polystyrene foam has a moisture permeability at the level of 0.35%, and the foam – about 2%.
The strength of compared materials will be quite significant. Polyfoam is very easy to break and differs in the fact that it is pronounced. The reason lies in the structure of the material itself, which is granular. And in the case of polystyrene fiber, the granules are already melted and glued together, which makes it somewhere 6 times more stronger than the foam. If you compare the strength of the materials on compression, then in this case the foam will be better.
Both materials are distinguished by durability. But the inferno she will be much more. At the same time, as already mentioned above, the foam begins to crumble over time. To extend the durability of insulation, they must be protected from the impact of ultraviolet and other natural factors.
It should be said that when exposed to fire, the foam will be more harmful to humans than polystyrene foam. After all, it distinguishes with carcinogens and harmful connections. Polystyrene foam in this matter is safer.
Ability to process
Processing both materials is simple. They can be cut even to the easiest knife. But in the case of foam, it should be careful because of its fragility.
The price of foam is significantly lower than the cost of the foam. And it should be taken into account if a person has a small amount of cash. For instance, 1 cubic meter of foam will be 1.5 times cheaper than the same volume of fasteners. For this reason, it is used in the construction of housing, because it turns out to significantly reduce the cost of building construction.
What to choose what is better?
If we say that it is better to choose for insulation at home, then there is no unambiguous answer. In different places should be given preference to different materials. For example, for insulation of the floor from the inside and walls it is worth applying a foam insulation of low density. In addition, it can be used for insulation under lining with various materials, which differ in vapor permeability. This is due to the fact that the foam has an increased adhesion rate to bulk floors, plaster and various types of screed.
But the polystyrene foam will be in demand if it is necessary to apply a sustainable material in the conditions of serious contact pressure, high temperature differences, as well as floods. therefore It is commonly used for insulation of various non-residential premises, the foundation of buildings, concrete floors in garages, facades and roofs, as well as cottages with temporary heating.
