What it is?

Chunk basalt cardboard looks like fibrous mats of a certain size and a small thickness. Externally, the material resembles the usual mineral wool, but in a completely new format. Basalt cardboard is designed to create flame retardant isolation where it is especially necessary: ​​in furnaces, fireplaces, chimneys, in baths and saunas, including those built in private homes. This material was created as an environmentally friendly alternative to asbestos stoves previously used for the same purposes. Unlike them, basalt-based modules do not distinguish harmful substances into the atmosphere, provide absolute safety for human health or pets.

This thermal insulating material consists of a fibrous basis with the thickness of the elements of no more than 1-1.7 microns, as well as bentonite clay acting as a binder component. The resulting sheets are distinguished by high thermal resistance, refractory. The fibrous component is obtained from natural stone – basalt, which first melted, and then passed through the extruder. During the production of cardboard it is compacted, formulates, cut into elements of the desired size. Refractory fibrous material combines hardness and flexibility, its sheets are initially manufactured from non-combustible components.

Accordingly, it is intended for use in the hottest points of the room, where the temperature reaches the maximum limits.

Properties and characteristics

Basalt cardboard – material with excellent set of operational characteristics. The material is packaged, labeled and transported according to GOST 25880-83, the production is regulated by TU 95.2691-98. Among the main properties and parameters of basalt cardboard, you can allocate several.

  • Dimensions. The thickness of standard sheets begins from 5 mm, popular options are also available with indicators 10, 12, 20 mm. Nominal sizes are 60×120 cm.
  • Limit of operating temperatures. Material can be subjected to significant heating and freezing. It withstands the temperature in the range from -200 to + 700 ° C. Material withstands over 2000 freezing and heating cycles.
  • Density of 60-170 kg / m3. It is significantly higher than that of ordinary plates.
  • Low humidity. It does not exceed 1-2%.
  • Sound absorption coefficient. For low frequencies, it reaches a value of 0.1, for high – reaches 0.45. These are quite high indicators that allow substantially expanding the scope of basalt cardboard.
  • Parp permeability. Plates “Breathe”, providing an opportunity to remove excess moisture, water vapor.
  • Biological resistance. Basalt cardboard is not subject to rotting, fungus and mold formation. Rodents he also does not attract.
  • Combustion. Basalt cardboard changes its properties while increasing the temperature to + 750 ° C and above. For sintering fibers, it is necessary to heat up to + 1100 ° C and more, otherwise the material is not lit.
  • Duration of operation up to 50 years.
  • Easy cutting. Material without foil coating can be cut in a conventional knife.

That is why it is used as a thermal insulation element in furnaces, fireplaces, other sources of increased danger under intensive heating. Folgized basalt cardboard is manufactured directly on a thin aluminum basis, does not contain a mineral binder in the form of bentonite clay. This is the optimal version of the heat-insulating material that can additionally reduce the sound permeability of the room.


Maximum environmentally friendly insulating material, often denoted by abbreviation BIM. Basalt needle-free mat looks more like felt, often comes in rolls. It does not have any other components except the stone fiber. Mats are formed by a needle-free method that somewhat complicates further work with them.

Difference from mineral wool

Scope of application

  • boilers, sash and heating equipment dampers;
